Bonkers for Berroco

We just had to give a shout-out to Berroco in this issue. The prolific yarn brand has been delighting us with their easy to navigate website and increased customer interaction, culminating in the best kind of triple threat this summer: a fantastic new pattern book, a knit-along, and a contest!

Berroco Portfolio Vol. 2

The recently-released Berroco Portfolio Vol. 2 pattern book is already flying off the shelves at Urban Yarns. With 15 patterns in all weights of Berroco Ultra Alpaca and Berroco Vintage, it more than passes the common book purchase criteria of "I have to love at least 3 of the patterns..." We had enough trouble picking our favourite 4 below, and we want to make every single one of the 15. The previously released Berroco Portfolio Vol. 1 has also been restocked at Urban Yarns, as it is full of your future wardrobe staples as well!

Greenwood Shawl Knit Along

There are only 3 patterns pictured above, you say? That's because our 4th and favourite pattern is pictured in this section because it is the subject of an official Knit Along (KAL) - squee! The Greenwood Shawl by Martha Wissing calls for 6 hanks of Berroco Ultra Alpaca, and the pattern is available in the Berroco Portfolio Vol. 2 book, or as an individual PDF pattern through Urban Yarns' Ravelry In-Store Sales program (or your own Ravelry account). We colour print a hard copy for you too!

Greenwood is a shawl with lots of texture; "the varying stitch patterns evoke the idea of Victorian knitting samplers", while the asymmetrical shape modernises it to make it a wardrobe staple with jeans or in the always over-air-conditioned office.

The official cast-on date for the KAL was August 1st, and it will run through September 30th. Click here to view and participate in the Ravelry discussion board for the KAL. If you're a KAL newbie, in the words of the moderator Amy Palmer, joining this KAL "means following the discussion, chatting about your progress, sharing photos, and whatnot. There are no participation points and you don't have to chat much, or even at all, but we'd love to hear about your progress as we start knitting. For starters, have you picked out which color of Ultra Alpaca you'd like to use?" You are also welcome to ask questions for her or the group to answer, and there are stitch definitions and video technique tutorials posted.

As with any project, you are welcome to get an Urban Yarns instructor's expert assistance during this Knit Along by using this pattern as your project of choice in one of our Beyond Beginner group classes (5 student maximum) or booking private lessons as needed by the half-hour or hour. We would also love to see you working on your shawl at our free weekly Knit Night / Stitch 'n B*tch on Fridays from 7-9pm. No instruction is provided but you're welcome to call on the other knitters in the circle for troubleshooting advice or just the camaraderie of stitching together.

Berroco Bingo

Berroco's new summer promotion, Berroco Bingo, is here! Pick up a free tearsheet at Urban Yarns or download your own here, then complete any 10 items on the grid - they don't have to be in the same row. The simple and fun tasks to choose from include "try a new knitting technique", "drop in on a craft night at your LYS", and "follow Berroco on Facebook". You can also "buy Berroco yarn from your LYS", which goes along well with the Greenwood Shawl KAL ;)

Mail or upload your completed card to Berroco by August 31st, and you will be entered in a random draw for one of 10 prize packages that include the following:
- one copy of EACH of Berroco's 9 new pattern books, including Berroco Portfolio Vol. 2
- enough Berroco yarn to knit a Berroco project of your choice
- one Berroco project bag

Yes please! More details here.
