Pattern of the Month

Amberle
by Shannon Cook
-------
This intermediate shawl pattern was just released on April 4th and we already have shiny new print copies in-store! It is on Ravelry's "Hot Right Now" Top 20 list, and for good reason. Shannon says "Meet a triangular shawl that's as addictive to knit as it is snuggly to wear. Amberle's squishy textural stitches bring worsted yarns to life and the repetitive pattern is easily memorized-making it much less complicated than it looks." Anina is already knitting it up in Harrisville Watershed (exclusive in Canada to Urban Yarns!) in Eastview and Harrisville Highland in White. Harrisville yarns are sold in-store at our Point Grey location, and soon to be online.

...these are some of the hashtags of Wool and the Gang (WATG), the coolest kid on the yarn block in the UK. Its founders "created Wool and the Gang out of a passion for incredible design that's produced in a sustainable way." Canadian fans of WATG's clean lines and of-the-moment fashion have been paying for their online yarn and pattern orders to be shipped from the UK.

Until now.

Introducting your official Canadian online source of Wool and the Gang products... www.urbanyarns.com!  **wild applause**

WATG products will be up on the Urban Yarns web store in a matter of days, and lucky locals can shop WATG's wares in-store at our Point Grey Village, Vancouver BC location starting Monday April 11th. For the Spring/Summer season we are stocking WATG's Shiny Happy Cotton, a 100% pima cotton worsted grown in Peru and picked without the use of herbicides. We have a range of kits and patterns for this yarn for adults and wee ones, as well as by-the-ball for stitching up whatever your heart desires. Come Fall 2016, Urban Yarns will showcase WATG's crazy chunky Crazy Sexy Wool and more (don't you love the names?!)

Wait, there's more!

Keep an eye out for Wool and the Gang "Knit Parties" at Urban Yarns Point Grey throughout the summer! Registration will include the yarn and pattern for the project, access to party-exclusive WATG video tutorials, and hands-on guidance by an Urban Yarns instructor. First up will be their Tender Loving Clutch and Lil' Pillow Talk projects!

Wool and the Gang's website also features a free video "Wool School" walking you through each stitch technique in their patterns, from beginner to pro.

Join us for a kick-off party of this match made in heaven:

Delicious Yarns Tea Party
This Sunday!

The newest addition to Urban Yarns' inventory of hand-dyed superwash merino happens to be named what we exclaimed when we first saw it... Delicious! It must have been meant to be, because our first shipment from Valley Village, California arrived just in time to join the much-anticipated Tea [Cozy] Party this Sunday at our Point Grey store!

The colour styling of Delicious Yarns' signature Sweets yarns "came about when we were wishing for a hand-dyed yarn that would give us the fun of working up a variegated colorway, without the end result being too overwhelming to actually wear." With colour names like Mocha Raspberry, Cotton Candy, and Jellybean, they were immediately on our wish list too. These treats have already been loaded onto our web store, so take a look, then if you're local come join us this Sunday to squeeze them in person:

Delicious Yarns Tea Party
Sunday April 10th, 12-3pm
Urban Yarns Point Grey
4437 West 10th Ave. at Sasamat
Vancouver BC

Direct your sweet tooth towards mini "pixie" cupcakes from Fairy Cakes vegan bakery, accompanied by tea (and coffee - we're pretty sure there's such thing as a coffee tooth). Our feature door prize is a darling, British-made Emma Bridgewater collecter's mug ($40 value, shown below) kindly donated by Moricotta: Accents for Your Home. Urban Yarns is also providing 2 copies of Loani Prior's latest tea cozy pattern masterpiece collection, "Pretty Funny Tea Cosies". Swag bags (goodie bags?) will each include a free Loani Prior tea cozy pattern and two "Tea for Two" coupons for Laura K. Jewitt Designs jewellery, one for you and one to give to a friend. Each coupon entitles the bearer to $100 off any in-store purchase of $300 or more. Bling! Thank you, Laura! If you don't get a chance to pick up a printed coupon at the event, just give the phrase "Tea for Two" when you visit her store. Offer expires April 30th, 2016.

Most importantly, from 12:00-2:30pm there will be a charity silent auction of finished hand-knit tea cozies such as those shown above, complete with teapot. All funds raised will go to Vancouver's Downtown Eastside Women's Centre. Scroll down to the bottom of their home page for a video that says it all. Thank you to Sandra Dunkin for all of her time knitting not one but two fantastical Loani Prior cozies, and to Trish Everett for a last-minute beauty!

Our staff's love of sweets and coffee are the reason The Downtown Eastside Women's Centre came first to mind as this event's charity recipient. Our favourite coffee (and arguably the best in town) is from the Bean Around the World across the street, and their front seating area houses a year-round collection point for material donations to the Centre. Yarn, knitting needles and crochet hooks are always welcome, so visit "The Bean" soon to coffee-up and de-stash, stitchers!

See you Sunday!
at Urban Yarns Edgemont
& Online!

You know you were thinking it when we announced the relocation of our North Vancouver store in last month's newsletter...are they going to have a...YARN SALE?! Yes indeed, and it is go-time, bargain hunters! Urban Yarns Edgemont Village is located at 3111 Highland Blvd. at Edgemont Blvd., North Vancouver BC. Hours are Monday through Saturday 10:00am-5:30pm, Sundays 12:00-5:00pm.

Current prices are 25-40% off and up on select yarns (over 50 yarn lines so far!), and all sale patterns are $5.00/book, $2.50/booklet, and $1.00/single pattern. Needles and notions remain regular price.

The sale includes entire yarn lines we will no longer be carrying, due to discontinuation or just to make room for the new and fresh! The entire yarn lines on sale may be viewed here and may also be purchased online and shipped:  www.urbanyarns.com/salePlease note that shipping orders of sale yarns may take an additional 1-5 business days to transfer back from this North Vancouver clearance location before being packed and shipped from our Vancouver location. Remember shipping is always free across Canada and the continental US on orders above $125 CAD!

Other sale items available in-store only include discontinued colourways in ALL of our yarns, deeply discounted mismatched dye lots and odd balls in ALL of our yarns, and patterns and books galore including Rowan, Debbie Bliss, and Brooklyn Tweed...these you'll have to come in to see! Yarn lines and publications that we are continuing to carry at regular price are progressively being moved to our Point Grey store.

Thank you for your understanding that our Edgemont store staff will be unable to provide our usual sky-high level of customer support during this busy time. For the entire duration of the sale and subject to the number of customers requiring their attention, Edgemont staff will only be able to assist you with:
        - pointing out yarns that are the same gauge as required by your pattern
        - calculating the number of skeins of yarn required for a pattern in the same gauge
        - choosing an appropriate needle or hook size
We ask that you bring your pattern of choice from home, or choose one through self-directed browsing of the patterns and books in-store.

If you require assistance with any of the following, please visit our Point Grey, Vancouver location. We would be more than happy to help with shorter consults on the spot, or to book you a longer private consult or lesson with one of our Instructors as appropriate.
        - assisted research and choosing of a pattern and yarn
        - reading a pattern
        - altering a pattern
        - learning a knitting or crochet technique
        - troubleshooting mistakes in works-in-progress
        - guided use of our swift and ball winder (there is no longer one set up at the
          Edgemont store)
        - deciding which complements your skin tone better: Ecru or Ivory :)

The Edgemont Village location's last day of operation will be in mid-to-late May 2016, with regular hours in effect. We will then be renovating a new North Shore location during the summer months to open in Fall 2016. Urban Yarns Point Grey will of course be open throughout the spring and summer for our North Shore customers to visit, and/or we are happy to ship online purchases to your doorstep.
Happy Hunting for sale-yarn treasures!
