Book of the Month

Make It Mighty Ugly
by Kim Werker
-------
This is not a pattern book, or even a book specifically about knitting. It is "exercises & advice for getting creative even when it ain't pretty" and "a handbook for vanquishing creative demons"! Written by Vancouver local and Urban Yarns Point Grey Friday night Stitch 'n Bitch regular Kim Werker, it is a must-read for perfectionists and procrastinators alike.

"These Secrets" Yarn Launch!

Last Friday night we toasted the introduction of local goddess Caitlin ffrench's naturally-dyed "These Secrets" yarns to our Point Grey inventory. And we're talking really natural; Caitlin harvests or forages many of the dye ingredients herself in the forests (and alleys!) of the Vancouver area, and you will see ingredients such as logwood, cochineal, madder, indigo, wildcrafted tansy, chestnut, and henna on her hand-sewn fabric ball bands.

Caitlin (right) and Deanna having a ball :)

Urban Yarns instructor Deanna Krushinsky designed her one-of-a-kind "Scrumptious Cowl" pattern specifically for Caitlin's These Secrets chunky ombre cakes (below middle and right), which she is offering free with yarn purchase. Caitlin's own free shawl pattern "Simple Brilliance" is paired with 3-skein bundles of These Secrets worsted (below left), custom-dyed for Urban Yarns. Both yarns are 100% Alberta wool, and staff and customer response is that they are cheek-rubbingly soft! Available in-store only at Urban Yarns Point Grey until we can photo shoot these goodies and get them on our web store!

P.S. Because this is the first question knitters & crocheters ask each other, Deanna is wearing a Penguono cardigan/coat by Stephen West in a stash-busting array of yarns such as Madelinetosh and Noro, and Caitlin is wearing her own design, the Vaka circle shawl.
Sylvia McFadden Trunk Show

Next in our celebration of local talent is a trunk show of Sylvia "Bo Bilvia" / "softsweater" McFadden's shawl designs, launching Friday March 11th at Urban Yarns Point Grey with a 7-9pm wine & cheese. No longer a secret to the world stage, Sylvia's patterns have repeatedly appeared in Ravelry's "hot right now" Top 5 upon release. Heard of the Elder Tree Shawl, Fossil & Bone, or The Lonely Tree Shawl? All her. Come try on samples of her newest designs, and get 10% off the yarn to make one of your own!

Urban Yarns Booth at Fibres West

Tell your friends in Greater Vancouver, and come join us yourself! Urban Yarns will be packing up our favourite yarns and notions from our stores and sharing them at Fibres West 2016 on March 18th & 19th at the Cloverdale Exhibition Grounds in Surrey, BC.

Pre-register for classes, and plan your route of vendors and free lectures. There are great driving directions here on the website for the Rodeo in May. See you there!
Save the Date...for a Tea Party!
Blue Betty teacup & Jane Hoghew cream pitcher from Moricotta, aquamarine & diamond ring by Laura K. Jewitt

It started with Urban Yarns instructor & designer Sandra Dunkin's obsession with Loani Prior tea cozies...and grew into a scheme for a tea party themed Urban Yarns open house, complete with mini "pixie" cupcakes from Fairy Cakes, a door prize Emma Bridgewater collecter's mug kindly donated by our Point Grey Village neighbour Moricotta, swag bags with free patterns and two $100-off "Tea for Two" coupons for you and a friend to use towards select rings at neighbour Laura K Jewitt's jewelry heaven, a charity silent auction for fantastical finished tea cozies by Urban Yarns staff, and yes, tea. More info will be released throughout the month of March on Urban Yarns' Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. In the meantime, save the date!

Urban Yarns Edgemont Village On the Move

Oh my gauge do we ever have a lot of news this month! After 9 wonderful years being a part of the Edgemont Village family of shops in North Vancouver, BC, we have decided to relieve Valerie and staff from climbing into the rafters for yarn storage (literally) and move to a much bigger location! The current location's last day of operation will be in mid-May 2016, then we will be renovating the new location throughout the summer to open in Fall 2016. Classes may still run though the summer on the North Shore at a temporary space; we'll let you know in the May 4th e-newsletter and through store staff.

Urban Yarns Point Grey will of course be open throughout the spring and summer for our North Shore customers to visit, and/or we are happy to ship online purchases to your doorstep. Wish us luck, and we can't wait to share our new location with you!
In Memorium

We are sharing this news for those that had the pleasure of meeting one of the longest-standing members of the Urban Yarns knitting community, Sandra Northam. After a long and courageous battle with cancer, Sandra passed away on February 13, 2016. Her sunny and optimistic disposition and her love of knitting will be missed by us all. Her obituary and funeral service information may be found here.
