Noro Issue 7
Fall/Winter 2015/16
-------
We already know that any stockinette item is elevated simply by the use of Noro's wildly variegated yarn. This issue really focuses on intentional use of the striped colourways in terms of direction, construction, and pairing with solids, resulting in stunning and wearable pieces.

Special Orders Update

We have resumed accepting special orders by the ball for yarn colourways we currently stock, and pre-paid special orders by the bag for yarn colourways and brands that we do not currently stock but are carried by one of our current vendors. In order to increase shipping date accuracy (which can be wildly unpredictable for some brands!), in we will have set order cut-off dates for 2016 for each brand (1-4 per year), when all special orders will be ordered along with our store stock. Email knitting@urbanyarns.com for details.
First Things First!

How could we get you all excited in last month's newsletter about the upcoming Martin Storey Afghan KAL in Rowan Pure Wool Worsted and then muck up the link?!?! Never fear, it doesn't start until January 28th, and doesn't end until May 12th! This KAL is designed with the beginner knitter in mind, or an intermediate or experienced knitter who enjoys the variety of the many techniques introduced: knit/purl texture, simple lace & cables, and colourwork, to name a few.

Rowan just released this sneak peek of the finished product in the "Blue Colourway", as well as a more detailed description of the project here.

There are four different colour palettes to choose from to suit your tastes and home decor, with photos and a detailed shopping list for each already available here (requires a PDF reader program such as the free Adobe Reader). Urban Yarns carries every colour of Rowan Pure Wool Worsted, so drop by one of our two shops or order online for shipping or in-store pickup. Hint: an online order of over $125 CAD qualifies for free shipping throughout Canada and the Continental U.S.!

The pattern for one of the 8 squares will be released every two weeks, and stockists like Urban Yarns get each pattern a bit early so that we will have a demo square already knit up for you to view in-store. The finished afghan uses 6 of each of the square patterns for a total of 48 squares plus border. Time-crunched knitters can follow the KAL by making one square over the course of each 2-week interval, or speed deamons can make all 6! Each pattern will be released on knitrowan.com, as well as on a Ravelry  pattern page which will link back to knitrowan.com. The pattern downloads will be free, but you will have to register (free) and be logged in to knitrowan.com for the download links to appear. Patience - the project will not be posted here or on Ravelry until the launch date of January 28, 2016!

Yarn & Knitwear Donations

1. Urban Yarns just donated several years' worth of store demo sweaters to a local organization supporting Syrian refugee newcomers to the Greater Vancouver Area. If you have finished handknit or crocheted sweaters or coats that you would like us to drop off for you, sized baby to adult and in good condition, feel free to drop them off at one of our stores.

2. Urban Yarns is also a donation point for the 25,000 Touques Project to welcome the anticipated 25,000 Syrian refugees arriving across Canada this winter. This program accepts handknit, crocheted, or sewn fleece touques and other small winter accessories like mittens, sized baby to adult, but no clothing items. Please drop off at either of our stores.

3. Urban Yarns continues to accept donations of full balls of yarn (no scraps or WIPs please), needles/hooks/notions, and magazines/patterns, which we donate to local women's organizations as well as elementary school knitting programs. We also accept donations of finished handknit or crocheted clothing, accessories, or blankets, which we donate to various local charities who pass them directly on to those in need of them, often in the Downtown Eastside area.

**no yarn or clothing that has been exposed to moths please!

Thank you for your generousity to your neighbours in need!

Happy Knitting, Crocheting, & Fiber Artistry!
