Possum and Merino Accessories

Last year we carried the Lothlorian fingerless mittens and gloves and they were so popular that we brought in even more colours this year, as well as a large selection of socks and hats.  These garments are made using New Zealand possum fibre, a rare natural fibre that is exquisitely soft, and yet has amazing wearing characteristics.  Possum fibre is hollow, so the garments are very light, but extremely warm for their weight, while the blending with merino wool gives it incredible strength.  These garments are also machine washable and actually become even softer over time.   So, if you're looking for something warm to wear while you're knitting or crocheting your own accessories, these are ideal.  Or, if you're looking for a last minute gift, these ready made garments are the perfect solution.

- Always Something New -

From Knit Collage we have a great selection of colourful handspun yarn from India including Gypsy Garden, Pixie Dust, and Rolling Stone.  With the hope of creating  work for uneducated women in Punjab, Amy Small, the creative director of Knit Collage, and her team, spend countless hours teaching these women how to craft the yarns on traditional spinning wheels .  They currently employ 36 women in India and that number is growing.  This yarn is particularly perfect for colourful hats, scarves, or cowls, and a free cowl pattern is available with purchase of the yarn.

If you would like to knit with the most luxurious fibre, Zealana Air is a 40% possum, 40% cashmere, 20% silk blend.  Like the premade garments made from possum, this yarn is super soft and light - a real treat!

Jade Sapphire cashmere scarf kits for him and her have finally arrived in a variety of fabulous colours with each kit containing 7 gorgeous patterns to choose from.  A sample of one of the scarves is available for viewing at our Pt. Grey location.

We are continually receiving new shipments from Sweet Georgia, with the latest including stunning new colours of Superwash Worsted and Tough Love Sock. (Please note that stock of all colours is indicated on the website but not all images are present; they will be coming soon).

Just in is Knit Red, a book that appeals to women to take charge of their heart health. Many top knitwear designers have lent their talents and voices to this book including Debbie Bliss, Jared Flood, Ysolda Teague, Debbie Stoller and many more.  A portion of the proceeds from Knit Red will be donated to the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health in support of The Heart Truth.

If you thought Knit Your Own Royal Wedding was fun, or at least we sure did, wait till you see The Twelve Knits of Christmas by Fiona Goble.  This book contains 12 patterns from the drummer drumming to the partridge in a pear tree and comes complete with a fold-out pear tree at the back of the book, ready for your knitted partridge to perch.

New magazines include Vogue Knitting Holiday 2012 complete with 35 new knits such as hot hats and cool leg warmers, and Jane Austen Fall 2012 with 31 inspired projects including a pair of Northanger Abbey Mittens.

  - Project Ideas -

The beautiful scoop-neck sweater featured in the latest Vogue Knitting Holiday 2012 issue, is a deceptively easy diamond lace pattern that is hand-smocked after the knitting is complete.  This helps exaggerate the tapered aspect of the peplum silhouette and creates an elegant party sweater.  Suggested yarn is Classic Elite's Vista

If you're looking for a lovely cozy shawl, the Lonely Tree Winter Shawl, which is a free pattern on Ravelry is a great choice.  Alison knit this shawl using 3 balls of Debbie Bliss Winter Garden , a sample of which
is available for viewing at our Pt. Grey location.

For lace lovers, the intricate stole featured in Knit Red is a sophisticated wrap that is both fashionable and timeless.  Suggested yarn is Classic Elite Silky Alpaca Lace.
