Summer Greetings from the team at MTM!

The summer months bring new risks that we need to consider.  These risks include hazards involved with backyard pools, boats, home rentals, grills and fireworks.  Our newsletter this month is designed to highlight the potential risks and to remind you to protect yourselves against the consequences associated with them.

We'd love your feedback.  Please email your comments to:

Swimming Pools

diving-board-child.jpg Pools can be dangerous because they increase your liability risk. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 390 children drown each year in pools and spas. Your standard homeowner policy may not provide enough coverage for either your pool itself, or the liability risk associated with it. We recommend a minimum of $1,000,000 personal liability on your homeowner policy for anybody who has a pool. In addition to this, we recommend you purchase a personal umbrella policy.

Boats

harbor-sailboats.jpg Most homeowner policies exclude coverage for personal watercrafts such as boats and jet skis. In most cases, you will need to purchase a separate boat policy for motorized watercraft such as these. Keep in mind when purchasing or comparing boat insurance policies, you need to consider whether or not the policy covers activities such as water skiing and tubing. Many policies exclude this coverage and it must be added as a separate rider. Further, be sure that anybody who operates the boat is listed on the policy as an authorized operator. Insurance carriers can deny a claim if it occurs while an unlisted driver is operating the boat.

Vacation Rentals

key-chain.jpg If you are considering renting out your home, apartment or condominium there are serious insurance considerations. Rental is strictly prohibited under any homeowner policy. Some insurance carriers may allow you to purchase coverage on your homeowner policy for a short-term rental, (under 8 weeks per year), but others will not. Further, the homeowner policy will never provide coverage for a long term rental. A specific "rental policy" is required for this type of exposure. Anytime you make a decision to rent your home, apartment or condo, give us a call so that we can review your options with you.

Fireworks

Using fireworks may jeopardize your homeowner insurance coverage which means that if somebody is injured or your home is damaged from them, your insurance carrier can deny a claim. We recommend that all of our clients refrain from using fireworks on their premises because of the danger they pose to both people and property!

Grills

graphic-bbq-dad.jpg Liquid Petroleum gas or propane, used in gas grills, is highly flammable. Each year a high number of people are injured as a result of gas grill fires and explosions. The biggest cause of these fires arises when people first use a grill that has been left idle for a period of time or just after refilling and reattaching the grill's gas container. We recommend that you routinely perform safety checks to avoid accidents. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Checking the gas tank hose for leaks
  • Using the grill outdoors and placing it away from the home and deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  • Ensuring that the grill is stable and not in danger of tipping over
  • Ensuring that the grill is never stored indoors with freshly used coals
  • Ensuring that a hot grill is never moved
  • Ensuring that spare gas containers are not stored under the grill or indoors
  • Ensuring that children and pets stay at least 3' away from the grill area
  • Ensuring that the grill area is never left unattended
  • Ensuring that the lid to the grill is always open before lighting it
  • Using only charcoal starter fluid in the grill - never gasoline or other flammable liquids
  • If the flame goes out while you are cooking, turn off the grill and the gas and wait at least 15 minutes before relighting
  • Be ready to extinguish flames. Baking Soda and a fire extinguisher should be kept on hand. (Baking Soda can be used to control a grease fire). If you don't have an extinguisher, a bucket of sand or garden hose should be nearby.

July is the peak month for grill fires! Be Safe!
