NEW PRODUCT

Many of our insurance carriers are now offering a new and extremely attractive endorsement for MA personal auto policies.  It's called "Second Chance Accident Forgiveness".   The coverage varies from company to company but in most cases, purchasing this coverage means that you will not be charged first surchargeable accident that occurs in any 36 month period  - ( as long as there are no other accidents"forgiven" on the policy).   It's an extremely valuable coverage and will help  avoid significant  premium increases due to an at fault accident.  We will be happy to provide you with a quote at your request.

REDUCING SEVERE WINTER WEATHER RISK

cottage.jpg As if slippery sidewalks and snow-covered cars aren't bad enough during the winter, you face another potential headache:  ruined carpets and water damage to your ceilings and walls from leaks caused by ice dams or bursting pipes.  You may be able to avoid the resulting aggravation and expense by taking basic steps right now to prevent this kind of damage.

Ice Dams

An ice dam is an accumulation of ice at the lower edge of a sloped roof, usually at the gutter.  Once an ice dam forms, the potential damage can be serious.  Take these steps now to avoid trouble later:

-Keep the attic well-ventilated.  The colder the attic, the less melting and refreezing on the roof.

-Keep the attic floor well insulated to minimize the amount of heat rising through the attic from within the house.

Freezing Pipes

Frozen water pipes can cause water pressure to buildup between the ice blockage and the closed faucet at the end of a pipe, which leads to pipes bursting at their weakest point.  To keep water in pipes from freezing, take the following steps:

-Fit exposed pipes with insulation sleeves or wrapping to slow the heat transfer.

-Seal cracks and holes in outside walls and foundations near water pipes with caulking.

-Keep a slow trickle of water flowing through faucets connected to pipes that run through an unheated or unprotected space.

Keep these in mind to reduce your severe winter weather risk.

BUSINESS OWNERS

Welcome to another New England winter! Although some of our clients enjoy the outdoor activities involved in a classic New England winter, MTM reminds our commercial clients to take great care in keeping your premises safe from the ice, snow and cold temperatures. Here are some of our suggestions:

1.       Only hire insured contractors for any snow removal or salting and sanding operations.  Require that these contractors provide you with certificates of insurance, listing your business as ADDITIONAL INSURED'S on their general liability policies. Also be sure that they have their own Workers Comp and auto insurance coverage as well.

2.       Be sure to clear all snow and ice from any walkways, parking lots or public areas. This is also important for your own employees as well.

3.       Have your heating equipment maintained annually in order to avoid breakdowns that can lead to loss of heat, closed businesses and broken pipes.

4.       Monitor the buildup of snow on your roof's and hire qualified and insured contractors to remove the snow if it appears to have accumulated excessively.

Stay warm and safe this winter and please call us at MTM should you have any other questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
