It's No Fun To Be Underwater

Most individuals and businesses who are not in a flood zone think they are safe from floods and don't purchase flood insurance.  However, if you are the victim of a hurricane or heavy rains that cause flooding, you can sustain serious damage regardless of whether or not you are in a flood zone.  Hurricane Irene is a perfect example.  Several states on the East Coast sustained billions of dollars in damages.  Many of these areas were never susceptible to hurricane force winds or the flooding that results from a hurricane before.     In Vermont, one of the hardest-hit- states, towns were without power and other services for many days because of the flooding that damaged bridges, roads and residential commercial properties.

Flood Insurance is available  to every home and to every business even if your property is not in a flood zone.  We will be happy to provide you with quotes upon request.

Lights, Power, Action!

Every business needs power to operate.  Businesses need electricity to run their computers, to power their lights and sometimes  to even provide them with heat.  Here in New England with our  hurricanes, ice storms, and high winds, it is not uncommon for businesses to lose power for several days or for several weeks.   Most business insurance policies provide businesses with a small amount of coverage for property damage or lost income due to the inability of a power company to supply them with power.  However, many of these policies also contain exclusions that exclude coverage if the  loss of power is due to " overhead transmission lines". Overhead transmission lines are the wires that come into our business from telephone and overhead lines. As we all remember from the ice storm a few years ago, many businesses were without power for several weeks when the overhead transmission lines iced up and subsequently lost income since they could not operate without power.

At MTM, we recommend that our clients contact us to review their utility interruption exposures, and to make sure they have proper coverage to address losses caused by disruption of overhead transmission lines.

Choosing the Appropriate Fire Extinguisher

Class A: This is the most common extinguisher and can be used to put out fires in ordinary combustibles such as clothe, wood, rubber, paper and many plastics.

Class B:  Used on fires involving flammable liquids, such as grease, gasoline and oil.

Class C:  Designed for fires involving appliances, tools, or other equipment electrically energized or plugged in.

Class D:  For use on flammable metals; often specific for the type of metal in question.  These are typically found only in factories working with these metals.

Class K:  Intended for use on fires that involve vegetable oils, animal oils, or fats in cooking appliances.  These extinguishers are generally found in commercial kitchens, but are becoming more popular in the residential market for use in kitchens.
