The Incomparable Christ: The Person and Work of Jesus Christ

Written by

J. Oswald Chambers

Reviewed by Pat Harley

I came across The Incomparable Christ several years ago as I was longing to know Jesus in a deeper way.

It quickly became one of my favorite and most influential books, and a great help in better understanding the life of Jesus on earth. Since then I have read it over and over and always leave with fresh new insights into the person and work of Christ.

J. Oswald Sanders penned this book in 1952 and it soon became a classic. His goal was to provide a devotional and doctrinal treatment of the great facts of the person and work of Jesus Christ for those who were not theologians but who wanted to know their Savior in a more intimate way. He follows Jesus from preexistence through earthly life to second advent and spotlights the teachings and events that reveal Christ's dynamic uniqueness.

W. Graham Scroggie wrote "Christ was human and Christ was divine. The evidence of each is abundant, and the necessity for both is obvious. Had He not been man, He could not have sympathized with us: had He not been God, He could not have saved us". This great book helps us see the humanity AND the divinity of Christ simply and beautifully.

The chapters are short and yet each one of them is packed full of majesty and backed up with Scripture.

Yet Sanders has a way of writing that is so winsome, and even more enhanced by classic poetry that highlights many of the attributes and works of the Lord. This is an excellent devotional book that will compliment the study of the Gospels. But more importantly, this book elevates Christ in the eyes of the reader to the place He deserves...reverence, dignity, honor, majesty, glory and power. One can't help reading it without being awed, humbled and more deeply in love with Jesus, our Lord and Savior.

The Amazing Collection

15-Minute Bible Study

Amos

By Pat Harley

I recently saw a photo of a car dangling on the edge of a cliff that dropped off thousands of feet into a deep gorge. Somehow the driver was miraculously able to escape with his life and disaster was narrowly avoided. The picture spoke a thousand words.

In 760 BC, the prophet Amos did not have the advantage of photography to help him describe the impending disaster that was about to hit Israel and the surrounding nations. Instead he had to use word pictures, and in those pictures he was able to "speak a thousand words" of impending peril.

Amos was a herdsman and a tender of figs. Though a common farmer and a simple layperson, he was none the less eloquent in speech and fervent in spirit. Through a series of eight prophecies he told the nations that judgment was ...continue reading.

Be Amazing Devotional

Caught Off Guard

by Traci Martin

Oh no! Nightfall was setting in and a storm was brewing, needless to say I was anxious to get home after a long day. I settled into my car and turned the ignition and nothing. It would not start. Of course, it is barely out of warranty. As I watched my car being towed to the repair shop and waited for my uncle to give me a ride, I had to laugh at all of our car problems. My husband's car needed an expensive repair so that it could pass our state emission testing in the next month. Due to the very high mileage, the mechanic is recommending replacing the car. And our college aged daughter's car decided it did not want to drive in reverse any longer.

With all of the car problems we have experienced this week, you would think we drove old beat up clunkers. But that is not the case at all. We do have older cars but they are not THAT old and besides we maintain them very well. However no matter how well maintained, car problems do happen, often at the worst possible time. In fact not only do we have car problems, but problems with our homes, and problems with our electronics, and problems with our health. How can we be prepared when we have no idea when these crises will happen?

We may not know WHEN a crisis will happen, but ...continue reading.

   Asian Grilled Salmon

by Traci Martin

If it is summertime, it is grilling time! This Asian Grilled Salmon is an absolute favorite year round, but especially when it can be enjoyed outdoors!

Ingredients

  • 1 side fresh salmon, boned but skin on (about 3 pounds)

For the marinade

  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 3 tablespoons good soy sauce
  • 4 tablespoons good olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic

Directions

  • Light charcoal briquettes in a grill and brush the grilling rack with oil to keep the salmon from sticking.
  •  While the grill is heating, lay the salmon skin side down on a cutting board and cut it crosswise into 4 equal pieces.
  • Whisk together the mustard, soy sauce, olive oil, honey, ginger and garlic in a small bowl. Drizzle half of the marinade onto the salmon and allow it to sit for 10 minutes.
  •  Place the salmon skin side down on the hot grill; discard the marinade the fish was sitting in. Grill for 4 to 5 minutes, depending on the thickness of the fish. Turn carefully with a wide spatula and grill for another 4 to 5 minutes. The salmon will be slightly raw in the center, but don't worry; it will keep cooking as it sits.
  •  Transfer the fish to a flat plate, skin side down, and spoon the reserved marinade on top. Allow the fish to rest for 10 minutes.
  • Remove the skin and serve warm, at room temperature, or chilled.
