Infidel

Reviewed by Pat Harley

Written by Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Infidel chronicles Ayaan Ali's life from childhood in Somalia, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia to an adulthood in Kenya and Netherlands. Ayaan was raised in a strict Muslim family. Her mother was later abandoned by her father when he took another wife. Trying to raise three children in an ever changing political environment, the family began to unravel. Through it all, Ayaan survived a civil war, female mutilation, brutal beatings, and life in four unstable countries ruled by despots. She escaped a forced marriage and went on to fight for the rights of Muslim women. Her strong will and determination drove her to earn a college degree in political science and she became a member of the Dutch parliament in the Netherlands.

Through experience and study she rejected the tenets of the Muslim religion and sought to enlighten nations about the dangers of Islam and its teachings. She later partnered with Theo van Gogh, and together they produced a short film exposing some of its disturbing beliefs . Shortly after, an Islamic extremist brutally murdered Theo because of his involvement in the film and Ayaan became their next target.

Infidel gives its readers an inside look at the brutality and oppression women and those who oppose Islam face daily. Ayaan is considered one of the most admired and controversial figures in the world today as she speaks out with great intellect, boldness and courage. Every page is riveting, drawing the reader into her life and the lives of people in countries ravaged by war, oppression, poverty, ignorance and fear. The New York Times says Infidel is "brave, inspiring and beautifully written...narrated in clear, vigorous prose," and it has been on their best seller list.

Note: This is not a Christian book, nor is it a book for children. However, it is highly informative and leaves readers with an example of a woman of great courage who stands firm in the face of grave danger.

"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." - John 13:34-35

Jesus calls us to love one another in a way that will draw attention to who He is in our lives. A command that is easier said than done in our fallen world. Yet, it is the very act of loving the unlovable and the undeserved that is so radical, so different that causes others to take notice. Not of us, but of Christ loving through us.

May the love of Christ be evident to those around you this Valentine's Day!

KEEPERS
OF THE HOME
by Lindy Sweeney

Talk about timely: As I've finally completed today's "to do list" and feeling pretty good about getting so much done here at home, I realized my assigned article for this month's newsletter is "Keeper of the Home!" On top of that, my devotion time this morning was all about being thankful for God's answers to my prayers throughout the different stages of my life. When I compare these two subjects, I realize that not only has God given me a home, but He's given me a grateful heart for it! I guess you could say that I'm inspired!

In researching this subject for our "Be Amazing" study, I learned that God assigned the title "Keeper of the Home" to women, and in Titus 2:3 I read that I am not only to fulfill this duty but I am to encourage younger women to do so as well! This is His command for all who fall into the "older woman" category. However, before you get too excited thinking you're not the older woman, remember: we're all older than someone! Also, the implication is that the younger women are to accept this instruction from those who are older. I Timothy 5:14 uses the words "managers of the house," to describe married women. This comes from the Greek Word "Oikadespoteo" and means "to be master of a house; to rule a household; to manage family affairs." In other words, I am really the "CEO" of my home (NOT my husband). I like that title...it has a nice ring to it, don't you think? I love knowing my role in God's plan and so want to do fulfill it to the very best of my ability. When I do that, things surely do run more smoothly than when I don't. Colossians 3:23 reminds us that "it's the Lord you serve." When I understand that, every part of my role is easier.

Sometimes it's a bit overwhelming and often it's not so glamorous, but I find that when my attitude is right and my will is lined up with God's will, I can go about my day, doing my chores with a joyful spirit. I have also learned that I can CHOOSE MY ATTITUDE! Admittedly there are those times when I don't choose His, but this is my goal.

How about you? Do you need an attitude adjustment? There are days when I certainly do, but I've found that reading and knowing God's Word along with prayers of gratitude go a long way in making me more thankful, content and productive! God has answered more prayers for me than I can count and one of those was to give me a home where I can serve Him, my family and others! I really do love Dorothy's exclamation in "The Wizard of Oz" and agree totally with her that "there's no place like home!" Does your attitude make your family and friends feel this way too?

15-Minute

Bible Study

The Book of Daniel

by Eleanor Lewis

Daniel and his three friends were some of the best and brightest young men of Jerusalem taken into captivity in Babylon in 586 BC. The three friends so desired to obey the true God they refused to bow down to Nebuchadnezzar's image and were thrown into the fiery furnace. The king looked in and said, they had thrown three bound men in but he saw four men loosed walking in the fire without harm, and the fourth was like a son of the gods. Daniel's friends came out of the fiery furnace alive! Their hair was not singed, their clothes were not damaged, and they did not even smell of smoke. (Daniel 3:24-27b) Have you ever been in a fiery trial feeling bound and helpless? Even in the fire these young men were loosed and not alone because Jesus, the Son of God, was with them!

Daniel, obeying God's first commandment, refused to petition Darius instead of God and for that obedience he was thrown into the lion's den. Sometimes obedience seems to result in difficulty but every time God provided.   Daniel said, "My God sent His angel and shut the lions' mouths and they have not harmed me..."   Just as the fire had no effect on his three friends, the lions did not harm Daniel. However, when the king cast those who accused Daniel into the den, they were crushed by the lions before they even reached bottom! (Daniel 6:20-24)

The lesson is: trusting the Sovereign God brings God's protection.

Have you ever had a dream so frightening you could not get back to sleep for fear the dream would return? In addition to the lions den and fears of being taken from home to a strange land, Daniel had scary dreams and night visions. God showed Daniel future events including a frightening world ruler who will "wage war with the saints and overpower them...(and) speak monstrous things against the God of gods" (Daniel 7:21, 11:36)   We must trust that even in difficult times when the world speaks against God and us, the same sovereign God who protected Daniel and his friends has promised to protect us.

  1. What causes you fear today?

  2. What from the story of Daniel and his friends gives you comfort and hope?

  3. What assurance does Daniel 7:21-22 give?

  4. What added assurance does Daniel 7:13-14 give you?
