Dear GADA member,
Welcome back from the Thanksgiving break. Fall sports are wrapping up with some great football championships on the line. Winter sports are up and running and we're looking forward to some great battles on the courts, mats, and in the pools.
We have several links to articles concerning the big topic of GHSA re-classification this issue.
We are including membership information again this month so if you haven't yet, please be sure to join the GADA/NIAAA for the 2015-16 school year. Additionally we hope that everyone will make an effort to submit qualified student athletes for the GADA Scholarship! We like a challenge choosing outstanding winners, so the larger the field, the better the challenge!
Kind Regards,
Tommy Marshall

GHSA places 17 Gwinnett schools in new Class AAAAAAA
Gwinnette Daily Post
| The Georgia High School Association released its latest classification assignments Wednesday afternoon, leaving the majority of Gwinnett County's largest schools in the new Class AAAAAAA.
The GHSA's Reclassification Committee met to hear final appeals Wednesday, then placed schools in classifications for the next athletic cycle beginning with the 2016-17 school year. Seventeen of Gwinnett's 24 high schools will be part of AAAAAAA, which will feature 48 total schools.
One school currently in Georgia's largest classification that wasn't in that group for AAAAAAA is Dacula, which barely dipped into the second-largest classification, which will be AAAAAA.
Dacula is listed as the second-largest school in its class, just one student behind Johns Creek.
Dacula can stay in the class where it was placed or it can request to play up a classification in AAAAAAA to remain with the 17 Gwinnett schools - Mill Creek, Norcross, Brookwood, Peachtree Ridge, Meadowcreek, Collins Hill, Parkview, Berkmar, Grayson, North Gwinnett, Duluth, South Gwinnett, Archer, Shiloh, Central Gwinnett, Discovery and Mountain View. Georgia high school student with cerebral palsy signs wrestling scholarship
Karim Nabhan - University Chronicle
|
When faced with adversity, few choose to embrace and overcome their challenges. For Georgia high schooler and St. Cloud State wrestling recruit Devon Berry, his entire life has been one of persistence and determination.
Berry and his twin sister were born with complications, which led to a diagnosis of cerebral palsy for Devon at the age of 3.
For Berry, giving up has never been an option. He's a tri-sport athlete at Hampton High School in metro Atlanta who recently signed a wrestling scholarship to wrestle at reigning NCAA DII national champion St. Cloud State. Berry will attend St. Cloud State next fall, joining a wrestling team that contends for the NCAA Division II national title year after year.
"I've always said that having confidence is the start of having success and in order to be something you have to do something," said Berry, when discussing his overcoming of adversity to receive his wrestling scholarship. "I lost almost all of my matches in middle school and in high school I decided I didn't want to be the minority anymore." Having to use a walker or a wheelchair to move hasn't held Berry back. His immense upper body strength has helped him wrestle his way to becoming a 2 time area champion and a #3 ranking in the state. Berry credits his ability to his work ethic, his guidance from his mother, and most importantly, his faith in God. Berry first caught the media spotlight in 2012 when he was recognized for his courageous effort on the football field. A defensive lineman for the Hampton High School Hornets, Berry doesn't let his cerebral palsy stop him from playing the sports that he loves. The Atlanta Falcons recently honored Devon, making him an honorary captain for their game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on November 1st. ESPN will be airing a feature about Berry on their investigative journalism show E:60 on December 15th at 7:00 p.m. ET on ESPN2. Read more... |
MCHS unites with Positive Athlete Georgia
By R. Alan Richardson sports editor - Morgan Co. Citizen
|
Morgan County High School Athletic Director Steve Cisson announced this week that all of the Bulldog athletic teams have joined forces with Positive Athlete Georgia. The organization is headed up by former University of Georgia star Hines Ward who also played 14 years for the Pittsburg Steelers of the NFL. Morgan County's first recipient was swimmer Kylie Harris this past summer.
Here's a description from the Positive Athlete Georgia website at Geogia Positive Athletes. Positive Athlete Georgia is a movement by high-character professional athletes tied to Georgia professional and collegiate sports teams to promote the benefits of "positivity" to young athletes. These athletes believe it is crucial to begin shaping the futures of young athletes for life skills beyond athletic competition and to learn how to give back to their community. Current and former and professional athletes are members of this organization, and high school athletes will be invited to join based on being nominated by a coach, school administrator, parent or fan for the annual Georgia Positive High School Athlete Awards. North Atlanta parents cheer for athletics options
|
Vernetta Head's 13 year-old son, Harrison, is academically inclined - he favors chess and robotics over basketball or football.
But Head wants the Sutton Middle School eighth-grader to be well-rounded and to be more physical. So she attended the Nov. 18 meeting of the North Atlanta Parents for Public Schools held at SMS to find out what options are available to him when he heads off to North Atlanta High School.
"We have had a talk about it and I said, 'This year, you will play a sport,'" she said with a smile. The first semester Harrison ran cross country; now he is training to play lacrosse.
Approximately 50 parents attended the Wednesday afternoon meeting titled, "Sports & Team Spirit in Our North Atlanta Cluster."
On hand to talk about what is offered at North Atlanta High School and at SMS were Dwike Leonard, SMS athletic director; Scotty East, NAHS sports booster board president; and Andre Regan, NAHS athletic director.
"Sports will help our students learn coping skills," Leonard told parents. "We are trying to develop the whole child."
At SMS, students can participate in sports such as basketball, football, cheerleading, track and field, softball, soccer, cross country, golf, volleyball, tennis and wrestling.

Brookwood AD Mark Kimbro to retire this month
By Will Hammock - Gwinnett Prep Sports
| Mark Kimbro always talked about retiring to Wyoming, even sporting the state flag on his office wall as a reminder.
"That isn't going to happen," Kimbro said Thursday morning. "My wife said she wouldn't go. She can do the summers out there, but not the winters. It is pretty cold out there in the winter."
Kimbro does have other ambitions in retirement, though, and he will get to chase some of those very soon. He decided in the last few weeks that he will retire from Gwinnett County Public Schools on Nov. 30, ending a 10-year tenure as Brookwood's athletic and activities director.
He told the Broncos' head coaches last week of his decision and informed the county's other athletic directors on Wednesday.
"I don't know what I'll do (in retirement)," Kimbro said. "I might not be through working. I might look for something else to do. I may piddle around and look for somewhere to coach. I said when I left Central (Gwinnett) that I may coach again. My wife and I have had plans to do a mission. We own an RV lot in the mountains and our camper stays up there. We want to have another site for pastors and missionaries who don't have a place to go. I want to be grandaddy. We just got a new grandbaby, our first one. I have a lot of options. I'll take it slow and play it by ear."
Kimbro has deep roots in Gwinnett, including his longtime ties to Central, where he graduated in 1980 and is in the high school's hall of fame. He grew up as a huge Central fan, where he played football and baseball, and returned to coach there after college. He coached with the Black Knights for 22 years, 21 as head baseball coach, a run that earned him a spot in the Georgia Dugout Club's 2014 Hall of Fame class.
He helped longtime Central head football coach and athletic director Tally Johnson with AD duties until Brookwood offered him the job in 2006 to replace the retiring Dave Hunter. It meant that he had to give up coaching baseball, but he said the opportunity to do something different at Brookwood was appealing.
Kimbro was a fixture at Bronco athletic events during his tenure, traversing the state to watch the school's teams in competitions. He made it a point to see as many events as he could.
"The coaches and the kids, when you come and watch them play, it means a lot to them," said Kimbro, who will retire with 31 1/2 years of GCPS service. "That was true at Central and that is also true here. The kids know who you are and they appreciate you're there and watching them excel in athletics. It's a neat feeling that you get to do that."
