Dear GADA member,
It was an awesome conference! We had a record number of AD's from around the state taking LTI courses. We inducted a tremendous class into the GADA Hall of Fame. Every AD in attendance had the opportunity to take the School Safety class taught by Jay Hammes and get their School Safety National Certification. Dr. Ralph Swearngin was our Keynote speaker and we were able to honor him for all his years of service to the Student Athletes of Georgia. We had some great workshops, a golf tournament and the annual Low Country Boil! Mike Hodges spoke at the FCA breakfast and Gary Phillips gave his 'State of the Union' on Georgia High School Athletics. A very busy couple of days but a good time was had by all.
A special shout out to all the Board Members who work so hard to plan and implement a great conference and to all the instructors, speakers and vendors who helped make this a great conference. I enjoyed the year as President and wish Mike Singletary good luck as he takes over as our new President.
Good luck to each school as we enter the final stretch of the school year. We still have Region and State Tournaments, Spring break, Prom and graduation on the horizon but another great year in High School athletics is coming to a close. I wish each of you the best of luck as we complete this year and began preparations for 2014/15.

2014 GADA Conference Recap
Bob Stinchcomb, CMAA, GADA Past President
|
The Leadership Training Institute (LTI) offered 7 classes to GADA members from throughout the state of Georgia at the GADA Spring Conference, March 22-25, in Savannah. Georgia had its highest enrollment in leadership training from the last 8 years. There were over 110 GADA members taking one or more of the classes. This is a tribute to the professionalism of our members attempting to learn and improve the way we administer our school's athletic program. There are 44 of those who sat through LTC501 and LTC502 which qualifies them to sign up for their RAA (Registered Athletic Administrator) through the NIAAA office. The NIAAA will be happy to guide you through the process. Congratulations! Continue to strive for the CAA (certified athletic administrator) and CMAA (Certified Master Athletic Administrator).
The conference also saw many athletic administrators taking the CAA exam. We wish these athletic directors the best of luck as they anxiously wait for their scores. Be looking at future newsletters to see and congratulate those athletic directors who pass the exam.
The 2014 Hall of Fame and State Awards ceremonies were both wonderful and well attended. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes breakfast is always inspiring after a long conference.
Here is a special note about our keynote speaker. Dr. Ralph Swearngin has been a leader and inspiration for countless administrators through the country. He has served GHSA for over twenty years. His keynote remarks were a nostalgic look back at interscholastic sports from the "Baby Boomer Generation (1944-1964)" to the rapid social changes of "Generation X (1964-1984)" and the ever present issues of social media from "Generation Y (1984-2004)." He taught us that all things change but education base athletics must maintain its integrity and never lose the identity of being an extension of the classroom.
In the world of athletics, most individual's physiques are tall and massive students-athletes or former college athletes turned coach and athletic administrator. They speak with booming voices and have the physical strength of years in a weight room. Is it not ironic that the leader of the GHSA was relatively small in stature; spoke in soft tones and yet held the heavy load of every student-athlete in the state of Georgia on his shoulders. One would say to never judge a book by its cover. That is not true in Dr. Swearngin's case. What you see is exactly what you get. He is a confident leader with a significant academic profile and a foundation of strong spiritual character.
Student-athletes and coaches receive all the accolades from the radio and news print. GHSA gets the ink, or blame, when there is a battle with state legislators or there is a major rule change or a rule violation at a school. There is never any gratitude to GHSA for all their hard work at the Thomaston office. As the Dr. Swearngin era comes to an end and the book is about close on his time at GHSA, one would ask how did he do it for twenty years? It's simple. Read the cover.

Under legislative pressure, GHSA to vote on term limits for executive committee members
By Todd Holcomb - AJC.com
|
With the state legislature over its shoulder, the Georgia High School Association's executive committee will vote this month on constitutional amendments that would impose 10-year term limits on its 58 executive committee members and require that they be employed by a school or school system.
The vote, proposed by the GHSA office, doesn't mean the GHSA office supports those amendments.
The vote also doesn't mean the legislature couldn't force those rules on the GHSA if they don't pass.
GHSA executive director Ralph Swearngin said the vote is designed to get the opinions of the GHSA's constituency, the more than 450 member schools.
''The legislature expressed concerns that were registered to them from their constituencies, and we felt like it was our responsibility to take care of our own governance issues and put it out there to our member schools to see how they feel about it,'' Swearngin said Tuesday. "There has never been anyone (in the GHSA membership) bringing this forward. Let's see if it's an issue or not.''
The proposed GHSA constitutional amendments, which would be voted on at the GHSA's executive committee meeting on April 14 in Macon, are: 1. Members of the executive committee must be employed by a school or school system. 2. There must be four males and four females among the eight at-large members of the executive committee. 3. Executive committee members are limited to 10 years of service. 4. Region secretaries must be employed by a school or school system. Read more...
