March 2014
Dear GADA member,

Gary Long

Unbelievable how fast the school year is going!  Wrestling has crowned their State Champions, Basketball and Swimming is winding down and Spring Sports are up and running! This is really an amazing time of year for High School Athletics! We can only hope that the snow and ice is behind us and that Spring is in full bloom.  We all know how hard it is to find open dates in the Spring but thanks to all your hard work and dedication it happens.

March is our conference month!  I hope everyone has had a chance to get registered for the State Athletic Directors Conference in Savannah.  The conference will begin on March 22 at the Hilton Savannah Desoto.  There is still time to get registered just follow the instructions on our web site.  Dr. Ralph Swearngin will be our featured speaker and we will hear from Gary Phillips as he updates what is going on with the State Legislature and the Georgia High School Association.  We will be inducting the Class of 2014 into the GADA Hall Of Fame and recognize the Region and State AD of the year winners. In addition there will be golf, low country boil and opportunities to see some of historic Savannah. As you can see we have a great conference planned and look forward to seeing everyone in Savannah.

We want to congratulate all the schools that have made the state play offs and won  Region and State Championships.  We wish the best of luck to all of our students athletes still involved in Winter and Spring Sports.

Senate approves bill to diversify high school sports governing board
By Janel Davis - The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Membership on the Georgia High School Association's board would be changed to reflect the students in the school districts they represent under a bill passed Tuesday by the state Senate.

Senate Bill 343, sponsored by Sen. Jeff Mullis, R-Chickamauga, would require members of GHSA's boards of trustees, executive committee or associated boards be employed by a local school system or private school for at least 100 school days per year.

The GHSA supervises athletics and other activities for thousands of high school athletes across the state, including sponsoring the state football championships held annually in the Georgia Dome. Its 58-member board includes few African-Americans and four women.

Mullis has called the GHSA a "club" that lacks diversity and discounts smaller schools. The bill, he said, rights that wrong.
GHSA administrators have opposed the bill, saying they already disclose their finances and that 48 of the 58 board members are selected by school across the state.

The bill would also create a joint legislative oversight committee to monitor the GHSA's actions.

Senate Bill 288, which has already passed the Senate, would move the GHSA back under the General Assembly's oversight and require the group to make public financial reports.

That bill would bar any public high school from joining an organization that collects fees to organize interscholastic sports events if that group does not annually publish a comprehensive financial report.
GHSA should make changes, not Assembly
The Macon Telegraph
The role of government has come under fire lately. Should local, state and federal legislative bodies control every aspect of our lives? Just when you shake your head saying "no," the Georgia Legislature, which already believes it is all-powerful anyway, wants to reach into the admittedly flawed Georgia High School Association and make some changes. Lawmakers think they have that right because the General Assembly controls the purse strings to all 180 school systems in the state.

Instead of lawmakers dealing with the health and welfare of the state's population, such as finding more funding for the state's schools, they want to dabble in a private-membership sports organization. Senate Rules Committee Chairman Jeff Mullis (R-Chickamauga) said the GHSA was like a "members only club." Well, that's what it is. He's concerned about "how they conduct business." Translated, that means he's not getting what he wants for the schools in his district and he's willing, along with like-minded lawmakers, to bully the GHSA. One of the most difficult tasks the GHSA does is the classification of schools and in what region they will play. While the GHSA controls all competition between schools, from debate to baseball, make no mistake - this is about football. Read more...
