Georgia Athletic Directors Association Newsletter
Vol. 5 No. 3
October 2013
Dear GADA member,

Gary Long

It is hard to believe that it is already October and the fall sports are well under way. Softball is down to the last week and Region tournaments begin this week. Volleyball is drawing to a close and Area tournaments are getting ready to start. Cross Country is in full gear and getting ready for huge meets across the State. Competitive Cheerleading is gearing up for the State finals in November and Football is half way through the regular season! The school year is off to a fantastic start!

I want to remind everyone that the GADA is offering one membership option this year which is a dual membership with the National Interscholastic Athletic Association. You can get additional information and sign up for dual membership on our membership page. Many of the Regions have included the dual membership in their Region dues and then paid for every AD's membership at one time. I would encourage you to discuss this option at your next Region meeting.

The Board is working hard on the conference agenda in order to bring you the best conference ever. We should have the LTI course offerings that will be offered this year on line soon. Please mark your calendar for the conference on March 22-25, 2014. Included with registration this year is a course, taught by Jay Hammes, that will address the risk management issues in athletic competition. Each attendee will receive a certification endorsed by the NIAAA. Good luck to all teams as we continue with the 2013/14 school year.

Identified in the course are issues related to fans, athletics, facilities maintenance, evacuation procedures and applications for most other emergencies. By attending the course, members will receive a certification endorsed by the NIAAA.

Utah coach suspends his entire team over poor discipline, cyberbullying
By Cameron Smith - Yahoo Sports
Matt Labrum had seen enough.

As the head football coach at Union High in Roosevelt, Utah, Labrum had watched his players receive discipline for skipping classes at school. He'd been more troubled by others who were accused of cyberbullying fellow teens. He didn't like any of it.

So, after a loss to Judge Memorial Catholic High, Labrum told his team that as of that moment, they were no longer a team. All players - 80 in total - were required to turn in their jerseys and all equipment. No one would play football again until they "earned the privilege to play."

Incredibly, the players say they have embraced the tough love.

"We looked at it as a chance to say, 'Hey, we need to focus on some other things that are more important than winning a football game,'" Labrum told the Deseret News. "We got an emotional response from the boys. I think it really meant something to them, which was nice to see that it does mean something. There was none of them that fought us on it." Read more..
