February 2013
Dear GADA member,

Mike Carswell

The 2013 GADA conference is fast approaching.  We have what we believe is an outstanding line up of activities and events for our membership this year.

We are very proud to welcome Kennesaw State's Director of Athletics, Vaughn Williams as our keynote speaker. And once again GHSA Exectuive Director, Ralph Swearngin will speak. Additionally Mark Mariakis from Ridgeland High School will be the speaker for the FCA Breakfast Tuesday at 8:00AM. Also added to the schedule will be a seminiar on NCAA recruiting conducted by Dan Eassa (Recruiting Education Foundation) including all the changes to the NCAA Clearinghouse requirements. This is an incredibly information seminar and should not be missed.

Below you will also find the complete list of LTC courses have been added along with the instructors.

Lastly, we ask each of you to reach out to our Athletic Directors enjoying retirement and our middle school Athletic Directors to encourage them to attend the conference in Savannah this year. The broader the spectrum of our attendees, the greater we can share and pass on decades of experience to those who will follow in our footsteps.

Until then, hang in there,  good luck, and may God bless.

White House: Schools must open sports to disabled
By Greg Toppo - USA Today

he Obama administration for the first time is telling school districts across the USA that they must give disabled students equal access to extracurricular sports, a move that advocates say has been years in the making.

In a letter to schools due out Friday, Acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Seth Galanter of the Department of Education says schools should provide "reasonable modifications" to allow disabled students to participate - for instance, providing a deaf track athlete with a flashing light that goes off simultaneously with the starter pistol that others hear.

He said schools don't have to radically alter games or stop choosing the most qualified athletes for competitive teams. They can look to "allied" or "unified" sports teams, in which students with disabilities participate with students without them. Schools can't deny a disabled student a slot on a sports team because a coach believes he can't compete.

Schools that don't comply risk losing federal funding, but civil rights cases rarely get that far.

"We think it's huge," said Kirk Bauer, executive director of Disabled Sports USA, a national non-profit group established by Vietnam veterans that offers sports rehabilitation programs to anyone with a permanent disability.

He said 12 states require school sports programs to accommodate disabled students. Now, he said, other administrators "will start focusing on ways to provide those opportunities" to students who have a disability.

"It's really affording them access to terrific social situations that will hopefully break down some of the barriers and discrimination we've seen in the past," said Lindsay Jones of the Council for Exceptional Children, a national advocacy group. Read more...

Our Lady Of Mercy needs some bleachers
Our Lady of Mercy
needs some blea
chers.

We are trying to provide an area at our football field for the visitors. We would love donations, but are also open to purchasing if schools have a reasonable price.

We are open to any kinds of bleachers. But need several small 3 to 6 row bleachers or a larger one piece (15 row type). We have some space on the visiting side and ultimately would like a riser system to place them on but for now we are just looking for any possible bleachers.
