It is not about WHAT you say; it is about HOW you say it!

"If only they would listen!"

-Egyptian Parent

Some of us think that the words we say to our children are clearly delivered and correctly understood by them; nevertheless our children are deliberately not doing what they have been asked to do or commanded to execute. The reason, however, is not them but us. We tend to focus on what we say and not on how we say it, when "HOW" definitely overweighs "WHAT" when it comes to communicating with our children.

  • "HOW" refers to non-verbal communication which involves: body Language, facial expressions, tone of voice, etc.
  • "WHAT" refers to verbal communication which involves only words.

It's the "HOW" that turns our children "on" or "off". Imagine yourself saying the same exact command or piece of advice in two different ways: one positive and one negative. See, hear and feel the power of the "HOW". The way we say things determines whether our children respond and carry out what we've asked them to do, or ignore and neglect it.

If our body language and facial expressions are warm and soothing, and our tone of voice is soft and tender, then our words will be clearly delivered and most likely correctly understood. Thus, our children will make an effort to listen and obey. But if you see, hear and feel a different "HOW" which carries angry facial expressions, intimidating hand gestures and a loud, hostile voice with a threatening tone, the result will lead to you sadly repeating the usual phrase: "If only they could listen." Well, it's all in your hands!
