Brunch, Anyone?

What are the  events that make your Christmas at SSCC special?  What if I told you that one of the high points for the men of SSCC is the Women's Brunch each December?  Several of us actually look forward to getting  dressed up and waiting tables on that Saturday morning.

For more years than I care to admit, I have been a server at the brunch, along with about 15 to 20 other men who have been recruited over time by their wives, the very persistent Barb Duren or one of the other man-servants  in the red aprons. It is our way to demonstrate our admiration and support for the women who are such an important part of the ministry and fellowship at SSCC. I knew after my first time that it would be a long-term commitment.  What I did not realize then was that it would also become an important annual event for the other men who have become servers.

Each year, SSCC men have the opportunity not only to pamper a room full of our favorite ladies, but also to do our Man-thing and turn it into a "project". We discuss how to be more efficient, in what order to serve the tables, who is responsible for how the food and beverages get from the kitchen, to the tables,  then back to the dish washing station. We  also discuss how many teams, the size of the teams, and then we get our final "culinary cues" from Jim Torbert and his Kitchen Kommandos. It is a grand example of manly "How-to" that the ladies probably would not even understand.

This year, we took a brief moment to remember some of our crew who were missing, due to age, relocation or passing. We especially missed Del Shaller and Gordon Dalrymple, two men who had been serial servants in our Brunch Brigade for many years.

Then, the tables began to fill and we eagerly began our work: taking beverage orders, meeting friends and the guests they had invited to the event.  It is rumored that there was even a little flirtation between the served and the servers, but what happens at brunch stays at brunch!

No tips, please.

Grace Notes:  A Life of Prayer

Rev. Danny Gulden

Senior Minister

Rejoice always. Pray continually.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-17

A New Year signals new opportunity. The turning of the calendar is in many ways a tangible sign of the promise that God is doing a new thing. It is a time to re-evaluate and make changes that will bring us closer to being the person God has created us to be in this world.

As we begin to think about what to do better in 2015, many of uswill choose time in prayer as something that will shape our life. We will work hard at creating a disciplined prayer pattern, setting aside time to be in prayer, or purchasing material that will be a guide to us as we seek to better engage in prayer. As our lives get busy, we misplace the book, or we can't find the "right" words to say. We get frustrated, discouraged, and feel as though God is one who is unconcerned with humanity.

In his letter to the people of Thessalonia, Paul challenged them to rejoice always and pray continually. This challenge has always confused and discouraged people who felt like they have neither the time nor the discipline to rejoice always and to pray continually. Fred Craddock offers this help:  "Christian faith embraces the whole of life and is not a matter of moods or giving God his part. All of life can be a joyous celebration of the presence of God and salvation. This is not a matter of how one feels but of what God has done."

Some would go so far to say that all of life is prayer. The truth is that there are no right words, universal disciplines, or formulas for prayer. The first and most important step to prayer is being open to the presence of God in your life. One must have the vision to see God everywhere and in everything. Prayer is the ongoing practice of both talking and listening to God. This may very well be what Paul means when he challenges the people of Thessalonia to "pray continually." All of life can be considered prayer; the holy is always in our midst. Begin each day with the idea that you will recognize the holy and you will find yourself filled with prayers of gratitude, thanksgiving, and true joy.

Peace to your path in 2015,

Big Christmas Gift for Our Friends in Mungeli, India

It is with great joy that we share the news that The Rambo Committee has been awarded a $600,000 grant from US Aid's (US Agency for International Development) ASHA (American Schools and Hospitals Abroad) program!!  The Rambo Committee is a non-profit established in 1923 to support the work of the Christian Hospital in Mungeli, India where our friends Drs. Teresa and Anil Henry serve.

Dr. Anil Henry

In 2007, Dr. Anil Henry visited SSCC to tell of his Global Ministry assignment to the Christian Hospital Mungeli and we have worked in partnership with him since then.  Several SSCC members have been to India to see and volunteer in the hospital and English school.  They include Nancy and Molly McDaniel, Landa Simmons, Dale Williamson, Barbara Duren, and Chris Furqueron.

After returning from their trips, Nancy and Landa were in contact with the only surviving member of the Rambo Committee.  In 2010 they "rebooted" the board, recruiting new members, establishing a website, and working to support Anil in the development and delivery of programs and services provided for the people of Mungeli and the surrounding area.

This grant will be used to establish a women's clinic in Mungeli.  The infant mortality rate in this rural area is disproportionately high due to lack of education and treatment.  Also, women of this area often try to deliver alone or with an untrained person.  It is generally only after the laboring mother is in severe distress that she is brought to the hospital.  This award will be used to:

  • Build a new maternity ward for recovery and treatment after delivery
  • Build a neo-natal ICU with lifesaving equipment
  • Build a labor room for women in labor.  One dedicated solely for moms with Hepatits B and/or HIV
  • Provide a mobile clinic to travel into the community providing education and pre-natal care
  • Build a health education room
  • Build an operating room for women suffering from acute conditions and complications from labor
  • Build an ICU room for women suffering from acute complication from delivery

One condition of the grant is that the Rambo Committee provide the additional $97,370 needed to complete the building of these projects and procure the equipment as spelled out in the grant application.  (It's amazing what $697,370 can buy in rural India!) Anyone who has applied for a government grant knows this was an arduous process and we couldn't be more thankful for the fruitful results!  Thanks especially to Gayatri in India who voluntarily completed the tedious grant application and for Leslie Wheeler (former SSCC bookkeeper) who provided the required financial review and follow up.

Youth Christmas Party

Our youth wrapped up the year in style with a Tacky White Elephant Christmas Party. Cindy & Peter Brown graciously hosted the party.  Some of the favorite White Elephant gifts included a Chewbacca coffee mug, Batman T-shirt, and a squirrel nutcracker.  It was a great night of fellowship and fun as we celebrated together.  We look forward to Youth starting back up in January with our Regional Youth Assembly and the Mexico Mission Trip.

JAM Christmas Activities

Our children had a wonderful time getting in the Christmas spirit by having an afternoon filled with Christmas arts & crafts.  We started by making our own nativity scenes on blocks of wood.  They were not only beautiful, but fun to play with!  We then made Advent wreaths from Play-Doh that the children loved decorating.  We finished with a special project for the parents, a homemade, handprint calendar for the year with their children's handprints for each month.

Will Scruggs Jazz Fellowship Christmas Concert:  What a Night It Was!

Micki Gonzalez

Director of Music Ministries

What a night it was!  Enthusiastic fans of jazz, of Christmas carols, of great playing and of the Will Scruggs Jazz Fellowship all gathered together in SSCC's sanctuary on Thursday, December 11, to hear the "Song of Simeon: A Christmas Journey," held for the second year in a row at our church.  An occasional glance around revealed intent listening, heads bobbing, feet tapping, and of course, thunderous applause after every number.  We all had our favorites: The amazing Brian Hogans on piano, the mesmerizing Marlon Patton on drums, the happiest guy on stage, Rafa Pereira on percussion, awsome Dan Baraszu ripping up the guitar, and of course, Will Scruggs himself, killing it on saxophones.

It has been a great privilege to host Will and his gang again this year.  This set of carol arrangements, written into a theologically cohesive story of bringing light into the world, is well worthy of the awards it has received, and we look forward to hearing where the future takes this outstanding ensemble.  If you missed it, the CD is available at www.willscruggs.com.

Thanks to all who helped make this event possible.  I know I've been joined by some dedicated fans to spread the word about this show.  For us, it was the highlight of the Christmas season.

Small Groups at SSCC:  Dining

International Dining

The Dining Group at Sandy Springs Christian Church began in April 2008 with a dinner at Mi Pilon - a Dominican restaurant on Buford Highway.  We have met every month since that time, except in December.  The locations and the cuisine vary.  The group usually meets on Sunday after second service, but varies because of restaurant size, operating hours, church schedule, and other factors.  A regular commitment is not required.  This is an event for those who are interested and are free on the date scheduled.  Some attend most of the time, some rarely.  All are welcome - church members, visitors, friends, guests.  Occasionally children have joined us.  They are always welcome.  Parents can best judge when the children will enjoy the event.  There is an e-mail list specifically sent to those who have indicated an interest in International Dining.  Frequently, the newsletters will list the next dining destination - but the e-mail list guarantees timely notice.  Questions and suggestions may always be directed to the host - Milt Hill, ph. 770-926-0131 - cell 770-241-6435.

Start a New Dining Group

Would you like to begin a dining group with a new focus?  Sandy Springs Christian Church would like to expand the small group program to include whatever a member is willing to lead and dedicate appropriate time toward.  Suggested possibilities are:
  • Barbecue,
  • Southern meat and burgers
  • Small groups dining in member homes (Eight at Eight, or a variant thereof), location within 3-5 miles of our church,
  • Mexican food, are all possibilities and there are many possibilities not mentioned

Thanks to All Volunteers:  Santa's Workshop

Thanks to all the SSCC volunteers that wrapped up Christmas dreams for Lake Forest students and their families on December 14!   Gifts were donated by different charities and businesses, collected at Lake Forest, transported to "Santa's Workshop" in Dunlap Hall and returned to LFE in time for Santa to distribute them to boys and girls who otherwise would not experience the magic of Christmas.  We have many dedicated "regulars" and new members also who helped make wrapping the over 400 gifts a breeze.  Thanks again to all who donated gift wrap, time and Christmas cheer.
