Practical Necessities

The Community Assistance Center in Sandy Springs has been important to me since 1996 when I first read about its mission in the Dunwoody Crier.   Since that time, the program at CAC has broadened and the goals have been streamlined, all focused on better meeting the needs of clients whose lives have been destabilized through loss of economic sufficiency.  Supporters of CAC are encouraged to contribute food and/or useful personal items as often as possible.  For better or for worse, I have a practical mindset. I try to contribute each Wednesday because that is Senior Citizens' Day at Kroger which allows an extra discount, and I can convince my husband that I am being frugal.

Over the years I have insisted on buying necessary and lightweight packages because of need

and lack of adequate parking at 1130 Hightower Trail. So, I may be walking a block or two in delivering the contribution. But the interesting part concerns the reaction of the Kroger cashiers when I come through the check-out line with my products. I can hear quiet remarks, such as "Here she comes again  . . . wonder what's wrong with that old woman . . . that old babe NEEDS a discount . . . some people are full of it . . . ."

But I soldier on, seldom making an explanation or an explosion.  Once I tried with a smile to murmur "I buy for a food pantry," and I heard a check-out clerk mutter, "Yeah . .  . right."  I guess it sounded like an excuse anyway after all this time.   But slings and arrows of indignity will make no impression on this old woman although I do lower my eyes from time to time.

I try to focus upon the enormous need of increasing numbers of the poor and remember the times as a child when my own family walked up and asked for help. In an era when there were no food stamps, "corn cobs" had a special meaning. But today in 2014 I know I have done a good deed when the volunteer in the food pantry at CAC smiles and says, "Here comes the toilet paper lady."

Grace Notes:  Are You Ready?

Rev. Danny Gulden

Senior Minister

I imagine that question strikes fear into many a heart. Ready for what? Did I forget something? As we move into December, we seem to become busier and busier. In the joy of the season, we are pulled in many different directions. So busy, in fact, that we can easily forget what we really should be preparing for- the gift of the Christ child, born to a teenage mother in a crude manger long ago. Are we ready for everything to change? Are we ready to receive the gift of a new reality? In the season of Advent, as we prepare to receive this gift anew, our greatest fear perhaps the greatest disservice that we can do for ourselves, is to not be ready to be transformed.

Our busyness also blinds us to what type of people we are today. Our preparation is not faithful unless we asking, 'God, what can I do now, what can I do today?" As we see injustice, as we bear witness to the struggles of others, do we think, "That should get better soon" or "I hope someone will do something about that." Does our busyness blind us to the needs of others?

Here is why being prepared is so important- Henri Nouwen calls it the VACARE DEO, room for God. While we are busy doing other things, we neglect to make room for God. If we fail to make room for God, we will fail to fully embrace the wonderful gift of Christmas.

Enjoy the season. Take in everything it has to offer. When you are asked, "are you ready," be able to say with confidence, "I am," knowing that there is room for God.

Blessings on your journey,

Youth & Children Serving in November

November was a great time for our children to show how thankful they are for so many blessings!  We wanted to take time and show the men and women that serve us everyday just how important they are!  Each child made a handmade card along with cookies that we delivered to a local fire station.  The children were so excited to see the big fire trucks and they were even made Junior Firefighters.  The firefighters were so gracious and happy to spend some time with our kids.  What a wonderful day of service.  Check out our pictures.

The youth went to the Cobb/Douglas Community Center to help pack Thanksgiving boxes for families in need.  It was a great chance to serve those in our community and the high school kids packed over 100 boxes!

Youth Rally @ SSCC

Youth from around the region gathered at SSCC for a youth rally on November 2nd.  We had a great day of fellowship, games, food and worship.  Our very own minister, Danny Gulden, preached an inspiring message on Social Justice.  We had over 70 people in attendance!  This has become a wonderful event for our church and a way to connect youth from around the region.  Check out pictures for our event.

English as a Second Language Thanksgiving Party

The same day SSCC served a Thanksgiving meal at Lake Forest Elementary, the English class for Lake Forest parents also had a Thanksgiving party.  We supplied the pumpkin pie, but the students did everything else, including cornbread, cinnamon spiced hot chocolate, and chicken chipotle tostados.  Their home cooking was absolutely delicious!

Thanks, Church, for supporting Judy, Alice, and Rollin in the exciting adventure of seeking God's will through service:  "The alien who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God."  Leviticus 19:34 (NRSV)

A Thanksgiving Tradition:  Dinner with Lake Forest Elementary School

We had another successful Thanksgiving dinner with Lake Forest Elementary School (LFE) on November 20.  This year, the dinner was served on a Thursday to about 400 students and parents in the Lake Forest Cafeteria.  A dedicated crew of volunteers worked all week in the SSCC kitchen under the direction of Jim Torbert to prepare a traditional Thanksgiving dinner:  turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, gravy, green beans, cranberries, and rolls.  Thanks to everyone for the generous donations!  The teachers of LFE donated and prepared 22 turkeys.  Trader Joes in Sandy Springs donated many of the items used to complete the meal.  And we had 65 delicious pies donated by SSCC members and friends!

This has become wonderful tradition between SSCC and LFE.  Those who served the meal at the school had the opportunity to see how special it is for the LFE families (90% of the students are non-English speaking at home) to experience a traditional American Thanksgiving.  The students are proud to wear their nicest clothes and to have a chance to introduce their parents to their teachers.

The LFE staff is very appreciative of the SSCC volunteers.  This experience always captures the spirit of Thanksgiving.  Again, thanks to everyone who helped.

You are in for a Christmas treat!  The Will Scruggs Jazz Fellowship will return to SSCC!! The world-renowned 14-piece jazz ensemble will present their Christmas Show: "Song of Simeon: A Christmas Journey." Thursday, December 11 at 7:30 pm. We offered this program last year, and it is back by popular demand. Attendees were so happy to have such a quality musical Christmas program conveniently located just outside the perimeter! The musicians that perform have recorded nationally and internationally with well-known artists such as Natalie Cole, Cee lo Green, Art Garfunkle, Gladys Knight, Johnny Mathis and others. In 2012, when the Song of Simeon CD debuted, NPR awarded it the honor of one of the ten best albums (not just Christmas; not just jazz) of the year! Give yourself a gift this year and take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. You will be glad you did!

Adult tickets are $15; students with ID are $10.
