Thank You from Kristin Wolf

SSCC,

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your continued support along my Seminary journey. I am now in the final stretch of my time at Columbia Theological Seminary- looking to graduate in May and (hopefully) be ordained summer 2015! None of this could have happened without the formation of a wonderful church that I've called home for most of my life. Thank you.

It is a common tradition for a seminarian's home church to financially support a student along this journey. The past scholarship received was used for a January term course in Appalachia called Integrations. We toured Appalachia witnessing some of the most poverty stricken areas in our country while being engulfed in rich culture and tradition of the Appalachian people, discerning our call while witnessing the work of others. This year the funds will be used to pay for a Disciples Polity course that is a requirement for ordination. These funds should cover the course and books. The DOC Polity course will be an online course overseen by Rev. Jerry Gladson (DOC) and Rev. Stan Saunders (DOC).

I am so excited to be finishing this three year journey and to be going out from this experience into DOC churches to work. Thank you for being a part of my formation and supporting me!

In Peace,

Kristin Wolf

Grace Notes:    "Practicing Gratitude"

Rev. Danny Gulden, Senior Minister

This is the day the Lord made; we will rejoice and celebrate in it. Psalm 118:24

Give thanks in every situation, because this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.  1Thessalonians 5:18

There are many words of wisdom about gratitude and thankfulness running throughout scripture. We enter into a time of year when many people will practice in various ways the act of giving thanks. How do we practice gratitude in a world that so often seems unforgiving and ungrateful? This is a question so many of us wrestle with, which I think is why our culture uses this period of time leading into Thanksgiving as a set period to practice gratitude.

The late great preacher Peter Gomes offers some sound advice on practicing gratitude:
"To give God priority and to gain perspective requires a reordering of the way we think, and an attitude adjustment on the part of believers such as ourselves. The way we begin to make the adjustment, the way to refocus our spiritual energy, is to not consider what we need the beginning point of our spiritual lives, but what we have received."

What would change if we began each day by being grateful for what we have received rather than what we believe we need? When people come to talk with me in my office about struggles, I have noticed that most of us are stuck on what we perceive we need, no matter how trivial that may be. While we are doing this, we are missing all of the blessings that are right in front of us. A friend of mine likes to call this, "stepping over dollars to pick up a dime."

The truth is that the world can be unforgiving and ungrateful. Another truth is that this is not how God intends for the world to be. Perhaps God is waiting on people like you and me to begin focusing our spiritual energy on what we have already graciously received. Maybe then we can change the world one recognized blessing at a time.

With deep gratitude for you,

From Pulpit to Pew

Rev. Linda S. Whitmire

Associate Minister

October 29, 2014

Dear Beloved Church,

One of the most difficult decisions a pastor makes is one that takes her out of the role of pastor to a community she loves. Often that also means saying "good-bye." As I have reached the time to step out of my role as your Associate Minister, I am grateful that "good-bye" simply isn't in my vocabulary when it comes to the community of Sandy Springs Christian Church. Nevertheless, January 4, 2015, will be my last day on staff. It is time for me to honor another season of life.

As I move from "pulpit to pew," I ask your support and understanding. I have loved being your pastor! What a privilege to complete my ministerial career in service to Christ with my home church, the church of my ordination! You have been gracious in receiving me: first as your Transitional Senior Minister, then as Minister of Pastoral Care, and this past year as Associate Minister. I have been humbled by your kindness and your trust, blessed by your love and affirmations, and privileged to walk in both difficult and joyful paths with you. For any way I have let you down in these roles, I ask your grace and forgiveness.

I leave grateful to a wonderful staff with whom it has been a pleasure to serve. We have had a good time together doing good work on behalf of Christ and all of you. In time there will be other configurations and personnel coming on board. I envy them a bit but offer already my full support and encouragement.

I have loved the energy and the passion for all things church shared with Rev. Danny. (I shall have to watch talking back to him in the midst of a sermon now.) He continues both as my pastor and my colleague, and my friend. What a blessing!

The next two months will be especially meaningful as I complete my ministry here. It has been a beautiful season of my life. As a new season begins, may God grant us many years to serve the Christ together in new and renewed ways.

With a grateful heart,

Associate Minister Transition
Rev. Danny Gulden, Senior Minister

I want to update you on what is next after Linda leaves us in early January. You may be wondering, "What's next?" First, we will be making plans to celebrate Linda's ministry on January 4, 2015. Stay tuned for the details on this celebration.

The Leadership Council and I will be putting together a team to assess the ministerial staffing needs for the future and look at the potential scope of an Associate role that will help us grow into our future at SSCC. When Linda's ministry concludes at the beginning of January, Bryant, Katie, lay leadership and I will work together to fill in the gaps as we move through the process of identifying the scope and the search for a new member of our team. I want us to be patient and thorough in our assessment and search to make sure we have the right person in the right role for our growth and success together.

Will Scruggs Jazz Fellowship Returns to SSCC!

Jazz Christmas Concert

Thursday, December 11 at 7:30 pm

You are in for a Christmas treat!  The Will Scruggs Jazz Fellowship will return to SSCC!! The world-renowned 14-piece jazz ensemble will present their Christmas Show: "Song of Simeon: A Christmas Journey." Thursday, December 11 at 7:30 pm. Comprised of many familiar carols, the music will inspire and delight you as it takes you on a Christmas journey through verse and song. For a little taste of music, click here to listen to the Will Scruggs Jazz Fellowship on YouTube.

We offered this program last year, and it is back by popular demand. Attendees were so happy to have such a quality musical Christmas program conveniently located just outside the perimeter! The musicians that perform have recorded nationally and internationally with well-known artists such as Natalie Cole, Cee lo Green, Art Garfunkle, Gladys Knight, Johnny Mathis and others. In 2012, when the Song of Simeon CD debuted, NPR awarded it the honor of one of the ten best albums (not just Christmas; not just jazz) of the year! Give yourself a gift this year and take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. You will be glad you did!

Adult tickets are $15; students with ID are $10.
To buy tickets on-line with a credit card, click here; you may drop a check in the offering plate clearly labeled "jazz concert" or mail your name, phone # and e-mail address, along with your check made payable to SSCC.

Adult Sunday School Offerings
Adult Sunday School offerings are dedicated to four different causes through the year.  First quarter offerings support our youth Mexico Mission trip; Second quarter supports Camp Balaam (at Camp Christian); third quarter sends our two "adopted" students from India's Family Village Farm to school for a year; and this year the fourth quarter collections will support seminary scholarships.

SSCC has an impressive record of sponsoring members through seminary.  The Revs. Linda Whitmire, Danny Gulden, Craig McDonald are just three of the many.  Part of the sponsorship includes financial support.  This year's fourth quarter collections will be used to fulfill our $1500 pledge for Kristin Wolf's third year at Columbia Theological Seminary.  Please consider a donation to help Kristin fulfill her goal.

To read Kristin's letter of appreciation this year, click here.  Her thank you from last year's support is on the Appreciation Board across from the Volunteer Office.

Third Quarter Sunday School Offerings

Thanks to all the generous donors from adult Sunday School and the Town Hall Meeting!  Third quarter offerings are sent to The Family Village Farm in Vellore, India for our annual pledge.  Several years ago, Sandy Springs Christian Church committed to sponsoring the education expenses of two students.  Thami and Karti have grown through our sponsorship and write to us regularly.  Click here to read a recent letter from Karti.  His letter expressing his appreciation is also posted on our Celebration Board.

With two weeks left in the quarter, we were short of our goal.  During the Town Hall meeting an announcement was made that we needed an additional $320 in the next two weeks.  That day alone our collection was over $400!  Once again, we proved that we are a generous and compassionate congregation.  Many thanks for rising to the challenge and making an important difference in the lives of two well-deserving students.

Fourth quarter Adult Sunday School offerings go towards scholarships for seminary students sponsored by SSCC.

JAM Character Day

The children at SSCC had a great time on October 5th learning about some of our favorite characters from the Bible.  We shared a great lunch and then we learned about Noah and Joseph and even had a special visit from Daniel as he told his story about the Lion's Den!  The children made arks and even got to put "animals" (stickers) in their ark.  We also made lion's faces and practiced our roaring.  They sure were fierce!  Our older children got to make their own dream coats to take home using brightly colored strips they picked out.  It was a wonderful day of learning and fun for our little ones as they explored some of our favorite stories from the bible.  Check out the pictures from our JAM event here!

Trunk 'n Treat 2014

We asked for extra support for our Trunk 'n Treat event this year and boy did we get it!  Friends and family of all ages (over 100 people!) were there and what a fantastic day of fellowship and good food!  We had 40 cars that were decorated with various themes including a Wild West trunk, complete with wanted posters for our ministers.  There was also a Wizard of Oz trunk, a Minion trunk (complete with an entire minion family),  Story Time with skeleton, Hunger Games, Gooey Eyeballs, and to top it off, Linda was dressed as a clown, complete with balloon animals.

A special thank you to Pete and Patty French for providing the delicious BBQ for the event!  All proceeds gathered will go to support our Mexico Mission Trip in the Spring.  We still have some BBQ!  If you are interested in purchasing, please contact Bryant.

Thank you to everyone who dressed up their trunks and handed out candy!  This year had the most creative trunks.  We appreciate all of your support!  See Trunk 'n Treat pictures here

Book Character Day at Lake Forest Elementary School

Thanks to all the volunteers who helped our friends at Lake Forest Elementary School celebrate Halloween this year. The students were excited to see our people visit their classrooms to read. Many volunteers had great costumes that really entertained the students. Our volunteers always comment on what great students there are at Lake Forest and how much they enjoy the opportunity to celebrate with the kids.

Mark your calendar for Thursday, November 20 when we will serve Lake Forest families a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.

Recommended Book Available in SSCC Church Library

The SSCC Church Library now has two copies of Peace Like a River by Leif Enger. You are encouraged to read this book, which is well written, spiritual and an interesting story. With three good reasons to approach it, I believe that your time will not be wasted as you read.

When some of our congregation complete it and if there is an interest, we may meet together for a discussion of the writer's themes. Please let me know if you would like to do this.
