Tell Us Your Story

We are looking for Happy new arrivals and Joyful long time members! The hours are short and the rewards are great. Your unique experience is valued.

The "Viewpoints at SSCC" section of our monthly newsletter provides  some of our most interesting and inspiring reading each month.  The story of SSCC is really the stories of our people and our service to others, and we want to hear more of your stories.

We are looking for writers to share the Good News of Sandy Springs Christian Church with our members and visitors.   Maybe it will be about how you found us or maybe it will be why, as Jimmy Buffet croons, "You just can't stop" being one of our stories. If you would like to share your love of SSCC with others through a short article, we are excited to put you in print!.

Grace Notes:    "Who Are We?"

Rev. Danny Gulden, Senior Minister

Have a Coke and a Smile

Just Do It

Think Different

Don't leave home without it

You most likely recognize the above slogans from well-known brands. Over the years, they penetrated our consciousness and culture so that most could immediately identify the product or company they represented. Back at our March town hall meeting, one of the items lifted up by the congregation was that you wanted to see Sandy Springs Christian Church become better known or "branded" in our surrounding community. People know us and knew of us, but we didn't have that unifying "brand" that we really need in order to take our growth and ministry to the next level.

The Leadership Council commissioned a Branding Task Force, consisting of Laura Campbell, Heather Rees, Trella Walker, Sharon Hanna and myself to work on developing our brand. We met, we prayed, we listened to words and thoughts from the Ministry Forums and the Leadership Council. We looked at the various words we use to describe SSCC, our mission statement, and the Disciples affirmation we share each week at the conclusion of worship.

Once we had gathered all of this info, we went about the work of boiling it into two statements, one six words and one three, that was presented to the Leadership Council and was enthusiastically endorsed. Who are we? Let me share our new branding statement with you:

Seeking God

Serving All

Growing Together

or

Seek. Serve. Grow.

Now begins the work of fleshing out how we will launch and use this brand. We are looking at a redesign of our church logo that will incorporate the branding statement. There are many avenues within social media that we can use the statement to tell people who we are. There are possibilities within our daily ministry where we can incorporate these words--for example, our ministry teams, our publications, etc. The possibilities are endless and exciting as we begin to be empowered to share.

We will be officially launching the branding series during a November sermon series that will begin to share the inspiration and vision for who we are. The series will illustrate why each of the six words are fundamental to who we are as a church. Thank you for the challenge and get ready to share who we are with those in our community.

Seeking God

Serving All

Growing Together

Grace and peace,

Ministry Forum Plans Are Discussed at 9/21 Town Hall

Bryant McDaniel, President of the Congregation

Another great crowd of about 100 congregants gathered in Dunlap Hall on Sunday, September 21 to hear from Danny and the three Ministry Forum Chairs about initial plans for 2015.

  • Danny began by mentioning that with Grace Alive! and our new Constitution, we have laid a solid foundation for an even stronger focus on the ministries of the church going forward.  He also mentioned that our vision is all about the ministries of the church and that it takes everyone's participation to make them work effectively.
  • Nancy McDaniel provided an overview of the Outreach Forum--with a particular focus on two new initiatives:  an ESOL program at Lake Forest Elementary School, and Family Promise.  She encouraged anyone who is interested in any outreach program to follow up with her.
  • Richard Allen shared preliminary plans for the Connect/Congregational Care Forum.  He addressed several ideas to help build relationships through hospitality and fellowship programs.
  • Leslie Lady advised that the Discipling Forum will be soliciting input on various aspects of the worship experience at SSCC via a congregational survey over the next three weeks.  Surveys are now available in the church office and on the church website.
  • Bryant McDaniel then wrapped things up and informed the crowd of our next two congregational meetings: November 30, 2014 and January 25, 2015

Election ballots for church leadership will take place following each service on November 30, 2014.

The plans and budgets for each Ministry Forum will be finalized in conjunction with the current stewardship campaign over the next few months.  They will be presented for congregational consideration and approval at the Annual Congregational Meeting scheduled for January 25, 2015.

Thank You to All Great Day of Service Volunteers

A small group gathered at the church on September 6 for The Great Day of Service.  Many were already at the Community Assistance Center with their monthly assignments.  Those at the church enjoyed bagels and coffee, a beautiful devotion and prayer by Danny, and a little fellowship before separating into different work groups.  Some worked on the grounds, some cleaned in the kitchen, several wrote letters to our two "adopted" students in India, and six from SSCC joined about six from the Islamic Center of North Fulton to build two raised garden beds for the Magnolia Senior Center (a low cost senior complex run by Initiative for Affordable Housing).

The Great Day of Service is encouraged as a way to honor the heroes and victims of the tragic events of 9/11/2001.  This was our fourth year to join our Muslim friends on a building project and thanks to the planning of Joel Blackford, it was our most successful.  Within three hours of laughter and sweat, two beds were finished and new friendships were formed.  At the end of the project, Joel encouraged each volunteer to make eye contact with the other volunteers.  He reminded everyone that although we represented different ages, different sexes, had different colors of skin, and different skills, together we created a lasting legacy for the seniors at Magnolia Village.  Just as important, we experienced a morning of harmony and understanding that left the volunteers craving future opportunities to work together.

Thanks to all of our volunteers at all the projects!

Fall News from Children and Youth Ministries

Bryant & Katie Gibson

Directors of Children and Youth Ministries

Youth Kickoff:  Banana Night!

Fall youth kicked off in grand fashion as we paid homage to the BANANA!  We started the night with trying to push a banana that the youth stuffed into their mouth through panty hose that they put over their head.  Both disgusting and hilarious!  We also had made banana splits, but these were no ordinary banana splits... One youth had to lie on the ground while a partner dropped the ice cream, chocolate syrup, whip cream, nuts and the cherry into their mouth while standing on a chair.

We also made banana characters and had a good old fashioned banana eating contest, won by Kim French who ate 5 bananas in 3 minutes!  We finished the night off by having a real banana split in a gutter!  It was a great night of fun and fellowship as we begin our program year.

Check out all of the pictures!

This Fall we are focusing on Social Justice as we seek to engage the youth in meaningful discussion about justice issues, not just here in the U.S., but around the world.  We will also attempt to put hands and feet on love as we go out into the community, to serve within and beyond our walls and to promote justice for all!

Children's Pool Party

We had a great time at our Children's Pool Party hosted by the Bentley Family (thanks Britt & Melissa!).  We had 14 excited children who had a wonderful afternoon of fun and fellowship.  Check out the pictures from our day!

Don't forget to join us the first Sunday of every month after church for our JAM meetings.  In October, we will have "Character Day" where we'll meet some of our favorite Bible characters and even make some costumes of our own!  Lunch will be provided.

Official Ribbon Cutting Marks Opening of the New Day School Playground

Kathy Gregory, Director of The Day School

Sunday, September 14 marked the official opening of our NEW PLAYGROUND!  SSCC and The Day School families gathered together to dine from the Varsity Truck and witness the official ribbon cutting to mark the opening of our new space. Children played on the new equipment while their parents watched with delight. We are so blessed to have such a far-reaching support group in our parents, staff and congregation. I thank everyone who volunteered their time and talents to make this dream a reality for children for years to come.

She is transferring membership from Holy Trinity Catholic Church where the parish is closed.

Glad to have you, Sam!
