My name is Heather Rees, and I am a new member of SSCC.  We had grown our family at Mt. Bethel United Methodist but always yearned for a "family" feeling at church that we were not feeling at Mt. Bethel.  Last Christmas I overheard my friend Cindy Brown telling someone a story about an event at her church.  It instantly peaked my curiosity as the church sounded amazing.  That led to our first visit to SSCC some months later.  It was a lovely surprise that Nancy McDaniel and Sharon Hanna were also members of this wonderful church (I have known Nancy for years through various committees, and Sharon and I had worked together on the Walton High School PTSA).

I came up with the idea of a one-day women's retreat at SSCC as a way to meet the women of the church while growing my relationship with God and being able to offer that to everyone who attends.  For many years, I have been a fan of women's retreats as a time of relaxation spent sharing stories, reading God's word and walking away with new friendships and personal discoveries.  I met our speaker, Kim Hill, at a retreat years ago and was instantly inspired by her story and her lovely voice.  I hope that this retreat, Rest and Reclaim, will encourage women and refresh their spirits.

Grace Notes:   When Love Does, Life Gets Interesting

Rev. Danny Gulden, Senior Minister

The prophet Hosea had visions for a new beginning and a renewed covenant between the people and God. He wrote that what he was ultimately searching for was "a love that lasts, not more religion. I want you to know God, not go to more prayer meetings." To know God is to know love. Love that lasts is rooted in God. This may be the simplest concept to understand, yet the most difficult to get right. Preacher types like me have been guilty of giving people more religion, when what they were really seeking was love. People of faith have spent countless hours busying ourselves with church while all we really needed was simply to be still and intimately know the presence of God.

We are beginning a new sermon series called Love Does, inspired by a book by the same name by a gentleman named Bob Goff. In a span of a week, this book was suggested to me by five different people. I can eventually take a hint! Listen to what Bob Goff writes, "Living a life fully engaged and full of whimsy and the kind of things that love does is something most people plan to do, but along the way they just kind of forget."

We get so busy, so caught up, that we forget to engage fully in life. Have you ever seen a group of friends sitting together somewhere and they are all on their phones? Instead of the joy of being present with one another, their minds and spirits are somewhere else. Perhaps you have been on an amazing trip and have been so worried about work or home that you don't even fully appreciate the experience you are having. There is much in this world that tempts to rob us of the gift of presence. Instead of being fully engaged with life, we simply go through the motions, ready to move on to the next thing that we believe will bring us life.

Hosea still speaks to us today- we are looking for a love that lasts- perhaps we find that love when we commit to being fully engaged in what God has in store for us in the present moment. That's the kind of thing that love does and as Goff puts it "when love does, life gets interesting."

Grace and peace to you,

Mission Trip:  Reflections on Rattlesnake Ridge

The Rattlesnake Ridge experience was Sandy Springs Christian Church at its best!  Just five hours up I-75, in one of the poorest counties in the United States, 34 church members and friends put their compassion and talents to use transforming their lives and the lives of those we served.  A truly intergenerational experience, with people from ages 2 to mid-70s, we witnessed to a variety of residents through our actions.

Rattlings from the "Ridge"

 Ray Woods

How would you like to spend weeks anticipating your trip to Rattlesnake Ridge with the SSCC All-Star Mission team, only to be told you were being put "on the bench"? When I got the word from Nancy, it was at first a bit of a let-down. After all, I had been to Mexico and Nashville and Tuscaloosa with SSCC before and had heard so much about the last trip to Kentucky.  But, Nancy McDaniel does not disappoint, and the project to build benches for the community sports field and picnic area presented its own challenges. How can you truly enjoy these activities, plus the natural beauty of the area without some convenient places to sit  and relax?

The  delivery of our bench materials reminded us of the first Commandment of Mission: "Be flexible"!  With some of the  pressure-treated pieces not being available, substitutions were in order, and we did some quick "recalculating." With the help of Floyd Hale, Atticus Mooney and a few local youth, we did a quick re-order, adjusted the design and did a lot of serious priming and sealing before we could begin the assembly process. We had a good time building and installing the new benches, plus building new relationships. McCluskey and Co. excelled in the digging and concrete work of the installation.

Where else can you go on a 5-day mission trip and gain 2 pounds? Our host for lodging, worship and most of our eating was the First Baptist Church in Whitley City, McCreary County, Kentucky. Their kitchen provided Team Torbert, (Mandy Mooney and Jim Torbert) with excellent facilities where they made sure made sure we ate well and to excess if we desired. Breakfast and dinner were eaten in the church, with lunches taken to the work sites. In addition, there were cakes, one of which was for Gary Peterson's birthday, celebrated during one evening at the church.  Our food team also prepared a hot lunch for the local children who participated in the Community Camp at the local community center. Each family was also given a watermelon for further celebration at their homes.

Our lodging was next to the local volunteer fire department, and we could watch them training. They have a modern facility, complete with a Hot-House and high rise simulator where they could practice fire fighting and rescue efforts in heated and smoke-filled conditions similar to an actual fire. On one evening, we were invited to tour the facility with the local firemen. It was a very educational event for our youth and adults.

At the end of one work day, we stopped by the Big South Fork River at a beautiful and calm spot where we witnessed the baptisms of four of our fellow missionaries. Steve Clark, Pete French, Jay Donnelly and Gary Peterson had each determined that this was a time and place where they could renew their faith commitment among fellow messengers in service to others.

All in all, it was an amazing five days of work, worship and wonder, set in the hills and hollers of Kentucky, among fellow spiritual travelers. I suspect we are all looking forward to a rematch next year with our Rattlesnake Ridge friends, provided Nancy McDaniel has recovered from her generous and compendious planning duties.

Thank You from the Rattlesnake Ridge Mission Team

Thanks to everyone for the generous donations that your Mission Team had the privilege of delivering to the Rattlesnake Ridge Kentucky Thrift Shop.  Our vehicles were filled to capacity and both the volume and quality of the donations overwhelmed the Rattlesnake Ridge community.  We know the donations are appreciated and will be enjoyed!  Just ask Emma McCluskey who saw a pair of her donated shorts being worn by a young girl just a day after they were delivered!

Children & Youth Ministries:  Summer at SSCC
Bryant & Katie Gibson, Co-Directors

Workshop of Wonders Vacation Bible School

During Vacation Bible School (VBS) this year, our children discovered how the ordinary becomes extraordinary with God. Through stories and activities, the kids met people from the Bible who used what they had to produce something amazing with God.

Each day opened with songs and an appearance from Dr. Wow and Dr. Wonder. These hilarious doctors introduced the lesson for the day and kept the kids and adults laughing! We all looked forward to hearing from these two characters each morning!

Throughout the week a variety of storytellers shared wonderful stories including Jesus feeding the 5000, the story of Queen Esther and the Parable of the Mustard Seed. The kids were able to explore the stories deeper as they made crafts and learned a few VBS songs. A few of the favorite crafts were puffy paint mustard trees, the footprint banners and Queen Esther character spoon puppets. Favorite songs included "We are the Clay and You are the Potter," and one of our 9:00 worship songs, "Your Grace is Enough."

The children also had a great time playing games during recreation, eating delicious snacks and attending our new VBS addition, Science. During Science, the kids did experiments to see how ordinary items, when paired with other ordinary items, created extraordinary results! The favorite experiment was the Diet Coke and Mentos Volcano, but they also loved building marshmallow towers and seeing how gummy bears grow in different solutions.

VBS was a success! Over the week, we served 64 kids from our church, The Day School and the community. Our list of volunteers is endless, and we are so gracious for the help that everyone provided. It was truly a group effort to put on such an exciting week, and we are already looking forward to next year!

A Summer at Camp Christian

It was another beautiful summer at Camp Christian! Over the course of June and July, 67 children, youth and adults from SSCC experienced God's love through nature and relationships at camp. There were lots of water balloons, evening worships, silly songs and small groups, but you can ask any of the campers and counselors- the best part of camp is the relationships that are formed. It is a joy to see the love and devotion that is given at each camp, as friendships are made and bonds are created. Thank you to all of the parents who sent their kids, the parents who drive groups down and back, the church members who sponsored campers, and the adults who volunteered. You made this summer a success!

Camp Balaam

Sandy Springs Christian Church, you did it again! Through your extremely generous donations, you helped to send seven counselors to lead Camp Balaam, sponsored many of the campers from the surrounding area, and you provided the supplies for craft projects and activities. Thank you, thank you for your kindness. Two years ago we started challenging the counselors to provide Balaam Buckets at their churches to collect money to support Camp Christian's ministry for Wilkinson County. We have been blown away at the generosity SSCC has given the past two years to this ministry. It is an important ministry that provides high school students the opportunity to lead a day camp and explore the ministry and leadership tools they have. The heart of the ministry though is giving children in Wilkinson County the chance to experience God's love and our love in a positive and fun environment. Thank you for supporting Camp Balaam!

Summer Lunches

Nancy McDaniel, Outreach Chair

On Sunday, July 13, our Outreach Focus was on MUST Ministries' summer lunch program.  MUST traditionally serves the people of Cobb County but in the past two years has expanded their summer lunch program into Fulton County.  Recognizing that hundreds of Fulton County school children qualify for and receive free lunch during the school year, MUST expanded to provide nourishment for these children through the summer when free lunches weren't provided.  For the program to be successful, the community delivers hundreds of donated lunches every Monday through Friday all summer to a central distribution point, and volunteers drive routes delivering them each weekday.

In less than one hour, 600 brown bags were packed with the requested water bottles, salty snack and sweet snack.  Clementines were provided, and a large crew of volunteers made 250 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and 350 ham and cheese.  For this to go as smoothly as it did, Greg Peterson made several trips to various stores calculating quantities, comparing prices, purchasing and delivering all the ingredients to Dunlap Hall.  The volume of the completed lunches was more massive than anticipated, and we had to call in extra volunteers to transport the lunches to the distribution point.  Thanks to Jim Armstrong, Sharon Hanna, and Bryant and Nancy McDaniel for stuffing their SUVs on a moment's notice.  Our efforts nourished 600 children on a hot summer day.  Thanks to everyone who helped!

Find Your Place in  Music Making at SSCC
Micki Gonzalez, Director of Music Ministries

Each summer, when the music ministry at SSCC takes a much-needed break, I head to Chicago Joe's Rock 'n Blues Camp, a business that I began in 2005 with my son Jordan's former guitar teacher, Chicago Joe Jones.  It runs from the second week in June through the third week in July every summer.  There we coach middle and high schoolers in the art of performing rock, blues, jazz, etc.  It is hard work running such a camp; lots of equipment to maintain, staff to hire, parents to keep happy and kids who come falling in love with making music that we never wish to disappoint.  But its rewards are many.  Helping young people gain poise and confidence is my favorite part.  And of course, this is where we get our ever flowing stream of players for our Worship Band.  I get to pick the best ones!

It might not seem at first blush to be a ministry, but it is.  Our campers come from all sorts of backgrounds.  We even take foster kids through a Child Advocacy group.  We are entrusted with each one, and music is our vehicle for the purpose of helping each one to learn to work with others, learn that no band/group is perfect, support everyone around them no matter what their skill level, and the most important part: that satisfaction and sense of self are gained through hard work with -- and trust in -- others.  When the work is hard and a young camper sheds tears, there is always an older camper who wipes them away and tells them they did that when they were the same age.  It is a beautiful thing, watching these kids struggle, achieve, and end their week with us in total exhilaration as they play their 4-song set to a cheering throng of parents and friends.

So now I turn my eyes towards an exciting year to come at SSCC.  We will be gearing up the Sanctuary Choir, Early Risers and the Worship Band in August, the adult Handbell Choir after Labor Day, and Children's Choir and Youth Handbells soon after that.  All groups are in growing mode, and we invite you to find your place in music-making at SSCC.  You know I'm hooked on teaching people to have fun becoming more confident in making music!  Come join in!

2014 Quadrennial Assembly: A Personal Dream Fulfilled
Merilyn Dimmitt

The International Quadrennial Assembly, recently held at the Marriott Marquis in Atlanta, is one of the most exciting events for women our church has to offer.  Every four years women from around the world come together as Disciples Women to learn, laugh, get reacquainted, worship and to stand in solidarity against injustice.

I became a Disciple in 1960 in Monticello, Indiana.  I have wanted to attend Quadrennial for over 40 years, but life seemed always to get in the way. Last month I was finally able to fulfill this dream and remove another item from my bucket list. Among many women who attended this Assembly were six disciple sisters from my original Monticello church and sister disciples from SSCC, which added even more blessings to this first-time experience.

The general theme for the 2014 Quadrennial Assembly was I SEE YOU!  On Wednesday we focused on I SEE YOU THROUGH THE EYES OF GRACE, Thursday I SEE YOU THROUGH THE VOICE OF COMPASSION,  Friday I SEE YOU WITH THE HANDS OF JUSTICE and Saturday I SEE YOU WITH A HEART OF JOY.

Saturday was a special day as we Walked Against Traffic in downtown Atlanta to raise awareness of Human Trafficking, a problem across this nation and especially here in Atlanta. The underlying focus of the entire Assembly was Human Trafficking. We hope to bring this awareness back to our local churches.

Our final session on Sunday was with the inspiring Rev. Dr. Cynthia Hale from the Ray of Hope Christian Church in Decatur, Georgia, who spoke on I SEE YOU WHOLE. She had her choir, musicians and dancers with her from Ray of Hope. This moving service was one I will never forget and a wonderful way to end the Quadrennial.

I was so proud of Barb Duren for coordinating the communion and the offering at each service for around 1500 women.  This was a huge job, and Barb did an outstanding job representing SSCC proudly. Our church also had volunteers at the Quadrennial singing in the choir, serving communion, collecting the offering and attending the many outstanding sessions.

The highlight of this Quadrennial was meeting women from around the world, seeing the joy in their hearts and hearing their inspiring stories of faith and courage.  I left the Quadrennial with a heart overflowing with the love of our amazing God and thankful for the gift of attending the 2014 Quadrennial Assembly.
