Viewpoints at SSCC

Seminary has a strange effect on your faith: it breaks down everything you thought you knew, leaves your faith in shambles, and (hopefully) begins to rebuild your faith. Sometimes it takes a bit of recovery to sort out all the pieces. You are left with more questions than answers and you become more content with the answer, "I don't know."

That's where I found myself in the summer of 2012, shortly after graduation. I had recently moved back to Georgia from Tennessee. I was looking for a new church home, but I wanted to find a place that was 1) open-minded and 2) valued education. When I saw that SSCC was offering a class on Jewish Origins & the New Testament and that they had hosted several scholars in their "Real People, Real Faith" series, I knew that SSCC was a great fit for me.

Over the past year and a half I've come to appreciate many things about SSCC, but two of the things that I still value most are the church's open-mindedness and respect for education. I've had the chance to teach on many occasions. I'm always overjoyed by everyone's participation and by the great questions that I receive. The ministerial staff and our lay teachers are top-notch and have so much to offer  I'm very grateful for this community and I look forward to what the future holds.

Grace Notes:  An Invitation
Rev. Danny Gulden, Senior Minister

No doubt you experienced or have heard about the fruitful town hall meeting that took place last Sunday. I left thinking that "town hall" probably wasn't the name that best captured what transpired. God was present as over 80 people of all ages got together to vision, dream, and talk about what God might have us put forward as our focus next year. If you have been in my office, you may have noticed I have a white board. You also may have noticed that it is often filled with words, phrases, and ideas that sometimes make sense and sometimes don't. The white board is my venue to capture dreams and thoughts throughout the day.  I often tell people that I would like to think that everything written on that board is in one way or another, Spirit led.

In a way, our town hall gathering was representative of a congregational white board. It was a place for us to share, to dream, to vision together what God may do with us and through us. All movements, big and small, begin with dreams that at times seem too big or too unrealistic, but possibe none the less. Do you have a mechanism in your life in which to dream? To vision? Your own white board perhaps? Something similar?  I think the key is learning to dream. Great vision originates with big dreams. A favorite quote of mine, comes from Walt Disney, "You can design and create, and build the most wonderful place in the world. But it takes people to make the dream a reality." How awesome a responsibility to find life abundant through making God's vision a reality in our congregation, our community, and the world.  Yet, that is the invitation God puts before us each and every day.

Preliminary 2015 Planning Priorities

On April 27, over eighty (80) of us gathered in Dunlap Hall to share ideas and perspectives on the most important two or three general areas of focus that should guide planning and budgeting for 2015.

Lively conversations were held around tables with identified priorities reported back to all present. In addition, each participant completed an individual survey identifying the three areas he/she considers to be the most important to address.

The top five general focus areas identified in the survey were:

  • Fostering connection
  • Multigenerational Ministries
  • Articulating the "brand" of SSCC
  • Social Justice
  • Communication and Technology

The survey results mirror the table conversations and the priorities identified at the Elder/Leadership Council in February.

Based on all the information and conversation, the Leadership Council decided to ask the Ministry Forums to begin identifying strategies for fostering connection within SSCC and strengthening our ministries to all generations through both intergenerational ministries (i.e. those that encourage the development of meaningful relationships and interactions across generations) and high quality age-specific ministries.

The planning focus for 2015 will also include deliberation on articulating the SSCC brand. The Leadership Council will discuss this at future meetings and anticipates the future appointment of a task force on this question and the related communication and technology strategies.

Next Planning Steps

Over the coming months, the three Ministry Forums will use the lens of the planning priorities to identify new possibilities, evaluate current programs and develop recommendations for 2015.

We encourage you to share any ideas that you have with members of the Ministry Forums.  The list of members and a brief description of each Ministry Forum's area of responsibility is below.  There are opportunities to be more deeply involved in planning through participation in a Ministry Forum as an ex-officio member without vote.  Please contact the chair of the Ministry Forum that interests you if you would like to serve as an ex-officio member.

The Ministry Forums will make preliminary recommendations at the next Town Hall meeting on September 21.

Final adoption of goals and priorities, along with the 2015 budget, will be approved by the congregation in January 2015.

Welcome New Members!

Barb Halabert                         Ken & Sue Strahm               Sandy & Jeff Matthews

                     April 6                                        April 20                                      April 27

In April, we were blessed to have 5 new members join our faith family at Sandy Springs Christian Church.  Welcome, Barb Halabert, Ken & Sue Strahm and Sandy & Jeff Matthews.

Congratulations, new members, on this important step in your faith journey.

Barb Halabert has two children, Anna (18) and Emma (12),  They reside in Brookhaven, GA and transferred membership from Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, Brookhaven. Barb considers herself a Progressive Christian.  Friendly members, dynamic pastors, and SSCC's non-rigid theology are her reasons for joining.  Barb is employed as Development Director at Green of Hearts.

Ken & Sue Strahm had been "inactive" at SSCC, but made their membership decision on Easter Sunday this year.  Ken is retired from Nuclear Navy and industry. Sue is a retired Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor.  Ken has been active in church administrations and Sue has taught children and women for many years in Bible Studies, Sunday School, and VBS. They reside in Marietta.

Sandy & Jeff Matthews transferred membership from Kingswood United Methodist.  They reside in Atlanta.  Sandy is a retired professor and Ken is a stone consultant.  Church philosophy and the many welcoming members are reasons they chose SSCC.

Three people were baptized on Easter Sunday:  William Reese, Bridget Walker and Janet Sierra.   Congratulations to these new members through baptism!

Children's Easter Egg Hunt

Our Children had a wonderful Easter celebration.  We had over 50 children hunting for eggs and we even got to meet the Easter Bunny. Two hundred people attended the Easter Brunch. Everyone enjoyed fellowship and delicious food provided by Nancy McDaniel, Jim Torbert, Cindy Brown, Merilyn Dimmitt, Julie Sanford, Greg and Darby Peterson, and Leslie Lady.  Thank you to these folks!  Click here to check out the pictures from a very special day!

Mexico Celebration Sunday

On April 13th, our Mexico Missionaries shared their stories of faith in a celebration worship service.  Kyle Miller, Bridget Walker, Lindy Watkins and Trenton Brown shared their testimony about a trip that changed lives on both sides of the border.  We also had a Fiesta after the service as we broke bread together to commemorate the hard work of our entire congregation in continuing to share God's love and grace all around the world.  Thank you to the kitchen crew and others for making the Fiesta possible. Please take a moment to view our pictures from the service!  Click here

Women's Ministries Spring Brunch:  Thank You from Campbell Stone Gift Shop Volunteers

To the Ladies of Women's Ministries/Christian Women's Fellowship, Sandy Springs Christian Church:

We would like to express to you our sincere and heartfelt thanks for giving us, the volunteers, recognition for our work.  Being remembered for what we do is always nice. We also appreciate you for sponsoring the Corner Cupboard affectionately called the "gift shop" at Campbell-Stone Sandy Springs.  Without it, many of our residents here would be hard pressed living on our limited incomes.

I feel our Lord places me in positions where I can help do some of his work by helping others who need a smile, a kind word or just an ear to listen to them, and the thanks I receive from those I assist in the gift shop is my reward.

All of the volunteers who help out in the gift shop do so because we enjoy being with the many residents and staff who visit the shop sometimes daily.  However, to repeat our feelings, being remembered for the work we do is always nice. THANK YOU!

The recognition from all of you each year by honoring us with the special luncheon which has such good food selections and great flavors. The gift is very much appreciated.  You are special people and together we all do good things through "our" shop.

Art for Scholarships
Mary Anne Posey

With generous donations from many of SSCC's own professional artists and local professional artists as well as art donations from members, the Scholarship Committee held another ART FOR SCHOLARSHIPS Silent Auction last weekend. The proceeds will assist in enabling the SSCC community to reward our own students for their achievements and show them, as they embark on higher education, there is a whole congregation standing behind them with faith in their future.  If you missed this "Art Opportunity," just stay tuned!  There will be another opportunity soon.  In the meantime, thanks to those of you who supported this very important event.

New Artwork in Common Ground

One of the final pieces of our upstairs renovation is this beautiful piece of artwork in Common Ground, inspired by John 15:5. The artist is Darya Soylu, who says "My art is my gift to all who seek my work. It is what gives me the greatest joy every day." The vine and branches remind us of our connection to the holy and our connection to all humanity through the holy. It is the hope of the design team that this piece of art will bring joy to all and remind us of these important connections.
