The term synergy comes from the Greek word synergia, meaning "working together" or the interaction of elements that when combined produce something greater than any individual element alone.

Our worship experience is a synergy.  The inspirational messages that Danny and Linda share with us could definitely stand on their own merit, but when you add beautiful music carefully selected by Micki and Ella the experience is enhanced. It's no secret that music is powerful.  We rush through our day multi-tasking ourselves into numbness. Then as we're driving along, a song comes on the radio.  For just a moment we are transported to a special place and wonder why we allowed the stress of the day to push us to the frazzled edge.  Think about a time in your life when you were a part of a sports team, orchestra, band, military unit, or part of a mission team to Mexico. No doubt your individual contribution was important, but your efforts alone could never produce same results.

The music ministry at Sandy Springs Christian Church is a beautiful example of synergy. It enhances the worship experience and enriches the lives of the participants, but did you know that you can be a part of that ministry?  Many are quick to say "Oh, I can't sing," but perhaps you took piano as a youth or played in the school band and can read music. The bell choir would be a perfect place for you! I'll also bet some of you sing in the car or the shower.  You don't need to be a perfectly trained soloist to join your voice with others in praise.  This past Sunday as the service came to a close, I vividly remember saying to myself, "Wow, that is synergy at its best!"

A Note from Danny:  "Part of a Revolution"
Rev. Danny Gulden, Senior Minister

Rev. Danny Gulden,

Senior Minister

There are days when it seems that we have not made much progress since Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech 50 years ago. There are those days when the world feels much different, days that feel like we have made much progress. I believe that Dr. King's speech spoke to kin-dom work, making the vision of God a reality for all people manifest on earth. I am reminded that kin-dom work is slow and often messier than we would like.

There is a great video out right now entitled, "What exactly is church?" You can check it out at http://on.fb.me/15ktO9V. One of my favorite lines in the video speaks to what happens when we come to church: "Today you didn't just come to a building, You are a part of a revolution two thousand years in the making." I find it to be an incredibly challenging statement, a reminder that by being a part of the church, we are a part of something so much bigger than ourselves. We are seeking together to be more the people God has created us to be.  When we are the church together, we are joining with a long line of people who come before us as well as leading the way for those who will come after us. We are continuing the work and ministry so clearly seen in the life of Jesus.

As we move into the fall, this continues to be an exciting time in the life of Sandy Springs Christian Church. Grace Alive! renovations continue, a new program year for youth and children's ministries begins, we prepare to host Nadia Bolz-Weber for Real People, Real Faith, and we are looking forward to celebrating both our 53rd Anniversary and the beginning our Generosity Campaign on September 15. I am reminded that these are not events; rather they are signs of God's reality being lived out. We are not simply the church, rather we are part of a revolution that began over 2000 years ago, a revolution that speaks to God's inclusive love and grace, a revolution that reminds us that we can be something more.

2013 Operating Budget Update
Cindy Brown, Treasurer

Thanks so much for your generosity so far this year!  As we enter the second half of the year, your finance team has two requests to make - so that we can ensure that your gifts are most effectively used to touch the lives of everyone at SSCC and those that we serve in the back half of the year.

1. Please be sure your pledge is up to date on an ongoing basis. Our challenge has been to realize more consistent member giving levels from month to month.  We encourage you to consider signing up for on-line banking with automatic bill pay. This will cost you nothing, but the benefits to the church are significant...and consistent.  This would allow the finance team to be more confident in pledge receipts and be comfortable spending as budgeted. If you are having trouble making your pledge, please speak confidentially to Vincine or Danny so that adjustments can be made to the income side of the budget.

2. Please consider additional giving as you are able.  You may recall that as a congregation, we approved a deficit budget for the year in the hope that church growth, prudent spending, the avoidance of significant maintenance/repair work on the church facilities, and a stronger economy might allow us to close the projected deficit by year end.  We are close to being on plan though July, but could still use your help to ensure that our giving levels are adequate to cover our projected expenses for the rest of the year.

Your overall generosity to SSCC is abundantly evident.  Please remember though, pledges to Grace Alive! are distinctly separate from our day-to-day operating budget. While your response to both of these campaigns has been generous, we respectfully ask you to consider these two requests from the finance team. If you have questions about how to sign up for on-line banking, please speak to Cindy Brown (treasurer) or Jim Bickelhaupt (technology expert).

Why We Decided to be Legacy Builders

The very first time we walked into Sandy Springs Christian Church, we came in for the 9:00 AM service at 9:06, carrying the coffee we stopped to purchase which made us late. We knew about 15 minutes after this that we would make this our church home. Little did we know just how much this church would mean to our lives and to our faith journey. Warren Buffett once wrote, "Someone's sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree long time ago." The experience of God's grace that we felt that very first time here was possible because of the generosity of those who had come before us. It is important to us to see that grace extended well into the future here at Sandy Springs Christian Church. We did not choose to become Legacy Builders because Danny is the Senior Minister; we decided to because we believe that the church has a witness and a message about who God is and who we are in God that is faithful. It is a blessing to do what we can to extend that witness long into the future. The decision was simple, and it really is very easy to make a commitment that will carry on long past our earthly days. We hope and pray that you will consider joining us in becoming Legacy Builders.

Please mark your calendars for September 13th and 14th because SSCC will be presenting a speaker you will NOT want to miss.  Her name is Nadia Bolz-Weber, founding pastor of House for All Sinners and Saints, an Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA)---a mission church in Denver, CO.  She is considered a leading voice in the emerging church movement.

Ms. Bolz-Weber is the author of Salvation on the Small Screen? 24 Hours of Christian Television, and her new book, Pastrix:  The Cranky, Beautiful Faith of a Sinner & Saint, will be released days before she arrives at SSCC.  She does not look like your typical pastor, but then, her story is also not typical.  Her website states, "Heavily tattooed and no holds barred, Nadia, a former stand-up comic, sure as hell didn't consider herself to be religious leader material - until the day she ended up leading a friend's funeral in a smoky downtown comedy club."  Phylis Tickle, author of "The Great Emergence," says this about her:  "Nadia Bolz-Weber has probably done more than any other pastor in recent times to poke therapeutic fun at the misdemeanors and flaws of overly-churched Christianity and Christians.  The passion behind her words, however, is as deeply pastoral as it is God-drenched and liberating..."

If you would like to experience the magic of Nadia Bolz-Weber, watch her on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kM9Y5S3UYi8.

The Day School Back in Action!
Kathy Gregory, The Day School Director
Kathy Gregory,
The Day School Director

I can almost smell the glue sticks!  The first day of school at The Day School is RIGHT around the corner.  We will be holding our Orientations on September 3rd and 4th where the children meet their teachers and classmates for the first time, and the parents gather in Dunlap Hall to learn about the coming school year.

This year we are thrilled to welcome back a former teacher, Amy Kilgore.  Amy will be joining our Pre-K team in The Super Stars with Anna Overend and Katie Clark.  I cannot WAIT to see what these amazing teachers have up their sleeves for the coming school year.

We have also made a new addition to our after school program, giving our parents more choices for their little ones in our optional after school hours.  Tanya Kuschnitzky will be working with several mediums to lead our little artists on Thursday afternoons.  Tanya joined our family last year as our music teacher. We are blessed that she chooses to share her many talents with us.

Thanks to our parents successful fund-raising efforts, we welcome Yolanda Castles back to teach Spanish to our 5-day students 2 days a week.  "Miss Yolanda" teaches the children in a very hands-on manner, incorporating props and songs into everything she teaches.  The halls will be "abuzz" with tiny little Spanish voices.

We are blessed to have so many families that entrust us with their children and encourage you to come visit and see The Day School in action!

What Is a Choir? Where Does It Come From?
Part 1 of a 4-Part Series
Micki Gonzalez, Director of Music Ministries

We have all been raised with choral music around us in one way or another.  Maybe a church choir, carolers at Christmas time, hearing one singing the Ode to Joy in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony when we go to the ASO.  Have you ever wondered about where choirs came from, though?

Oddly enough, choral music is the only form of music which was developed completely within the context of the Christian church.  In fact, the four-part harmony which is fundamental to it was also developed within the Church.  So you can truthfully say that Western (as opposed to Eastern) music developed its melodic and harmonic language from the humble beginnings of choral music!

Over the centuries, choirs have led congregations in worship by singing beautiful, mystical sounds which brought the listener a sense of the Presence of the Spirit.  Choirs have supported congregational singing, have sung texts which explore the deeper meanings of scripture, and have engaged and encouraged enthusiastic response for going out into the world and doing God's work.

Back to School... and Youth Group!
Katie & Bryant  Gibson, Directors of Youth Ministries
  Katie & Bryant Gibson
 Directors of Youth  Ministries

Fall is in the air!  School is back in session, football has begun, and most importantly, Youth Group is starting!  We can not wait to kick off our meetings on September 8th.  We will be working with the theme "Jesus Who?" and studying the many roles that Jesus has filled including story-teller, rebel, and "foodie".

The youth have had a busy summer, filled with many events including CYF and Chi-Rho camp, Six Flags, a lock-in at Chestnut Ridge, and a pool party at the McDaniel's house.
Click here to see pool party pictures on Skydrive.

Two of our sponsors also got married this summer!  We sat down with Sara Torbert to ask a few questions about life as newlyweds:

What is your favorite meal?  We grill a lot with Andy's home-grown veggies, zucchini and squash. Andy always adapts his recipes so I can eat vegetarian. We especially love Mexican, Italian, and our new favorite..Indian.

Favorite TV show? The Bachelorette (Andy watches it with me...He also does not know that I am calling him out on this. Duck Dynasty is another guilty pleasure...

Favorite memory of the honeymoon? Snorkeling in Molokini Crater (beautiful water and fish everywhere...we saw an octopus too). I had also planned to swim with dolphins, but Andy found out that swimming with them is illegal in Hawaii before the trip. But he did not tell me in hopes that we would find some in the wild, and I could..."jump in" with them..Ha...  Didn't happen though, but we plan on finding another place in the future.

Fun fact: I am the only girl Andy has ever said "I love you" to...I don't think anyone knows that except the two of us.

Awwww....... Thanks, Mr. and Mrs. Torbert!  Congratulations on your marriage!
