Viewpoints at SSCC

Nan and I were at Glacier National Park, Montana when Nan off-handedly said she wanted me to write the Viewpoints article for August. Surrounded by God's majesty and two special people (Nan and Sylvia O'Neal), I guess I must have said OK; so here I go.

First, my thoughts went to all the special people at SSCC who have been a part of my spiritual and personal growth.  After over 30 years of being a member, 10 of those as staff, the list gets pretty long. Next, I began thinking, why is SSCC so important to me? The first Sunday I attended church here (at the advice of a chaplain at Northside Hospital, who knew I was searching for a church home), I knew I wanted to be a part of this church. I was very shy, slipping out of church as quickly as possible after church was over (a few people remember this-- Kathy W., Woody, Becky K.), but not before I saw people hugging and smiling, I could feel the love and wanted to receive it, share it, and give it back.  So here I am--still here! And still feeling the love, even more with passing years.

There are so many opportunities for serving God here. I soon became part of the Christian Women's Fellowship and the Outreach Committee.  Both groups provided opportunities for giving back in thanksgiving for what I had received here and provided leadership opportunities which I never had. Most recently, I became part of Caring Made Visible, and I am assisting with Pastoral Care by sending out prayer requests to the appropriate people, always remembering confidentiality which is one of my most important values. Writing notes for Caring Made Visible and the Wednesday Morning Prayer Group may seem a little thing to do, but having been the recipient of some of those notes, I know how much they mean.

My family and my church family are why I live. I could write many words about SSCC, but bottom line--"Grace Spoken Here" is why SSCC is so important to me.

With love and thanksgiving,

Barb Duren

A Note from Danny:  "That's Not in the Bible!"
Rev. Danny Gulden, Senior Minister

Rev. Danny Gulden,

Senior Minister

I was channel surfing a few months ago, and I came across Bill O'Reilly talking about the money spent on the poor and how it should be cut. He said, "It's in the Bible; God helps those who help themselves." The next day, I was watching a speech from President Obama, who said "The Bible teaches that God helps those who help themselves."  The only problem in that statement is it is not in the Bible. The lesson here is that you should not replace your favorite theologian with your favorite politician or television personality.

There is a lot that is in the Bible. It's good stuff. There is also a lot that's not in the Bible that many believe is actually there. One example is that many believe the Bible says that "money is the root of all evil." That's not exactly true. It's "the love of money is the root of all evil."

The Bible is sacred and holy, revealing the actions and relationship of God and God's people. It is also used in some ways that are dangerous and theologically irresponsible. It is the overarching story of God's love for and pursuit of all humanity. As Disciples, we cherish the freedom we have to read and interpret the holy scriptures for ourselves--to discover the rich meaning in these ancient words for ourselves. Throughout human history and still today, much harm has been done by misunderstandings and misinformation over what is and isn't in the Bible.

Fredrick Buechner once wrote, "To be wise is to be eternally curious." In the coming weeks, we are going to raise our curiosity over what's not in the Bible and what the Bible actually says that is truly life-giving about some of these subjects. This promises to be a great series to invite a friend or neighbor to attend this month.

Well Done, Sandy Springs Christian Church!  Well Done!
Rev. Linda S. Whitmire

Those were the words humming in my heart as I took the stage with Danny to accept for you the 2013 James P. Johnson Award for Stewardship. This award, named for the former president of the foundation, is given by the Christian Church Foundation every two years at the General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada. And this year, as we gathered in Orlando with about 5000 other Disciples, Sandy Springs Christian Church was recognized. YOU were recognized for the commitment to true Christian stewardship you have made and continue to exhibit.

The church awarded this recognition must show leadership in the broad range of Christian stewardship which includes outreach, support of the Disciples Mission Fund, and a legacy builder program to support the long term mission of the church. Sandy Springs Christian Church, you have shown yourself faithful in all of these: supporting a broad range of outreach activities including our relationship with Lake Forest Elementary School, our interfaith relationships and our designation as a World Mission Partner; being the top supporter of Christian churches in Georgia to the Disciples Mission Fund which supports the varied ministries of the greater church of which we are a part; and initiating the Legacy Builder ministry just two and a half years ago with 33 individuals thus far stepping forward to make this commitment to the future of our church's calling.

Well done, Sandy Springs! Well done!  The beautifully engraved cut glass vase presented us will serve as a permanent reminder, not just of what we have done in the past, but of what we are called to do and be as we continue to grow into faithful stewardship of the resources entrusted to us.

Click here to see our church video shown at this year's presentation. Makes us proud! Calls us forward! Invites our faithfulness in all we have and are. Thank you, Sandy Springs, for setting the pace, showing the way, using your finances to share the love and grace of God.

Mission Trip to Appalachia:  "first real glimpse at empathy"
Sara Torbert

There is a tremendous difference between the word sympathy and the word empathy. To "walk in another's shoes," or show empathy, is easier said than done.  I always assumed I was exhibiting the qualities of empathy until we stepped foot into Samantha and Jason's home in Rattlesnake Ridge for the first time. I now realize, I still have a lot of learning to do.

Samantha is my age. She is a 26-year-old mother of three with dark brown hair and glasses who immediately took control of the work site, and was not shy about declaring what she believed needed to be completed in her home. Her kind but determined attitude towards restructuring her home reminded me of the strong and beautiful women of our church who know what needs to be done and who welcome new members into their homes and lives daily. Immediately, I realized the similarities between our two worlds. She did not become someone who needed aid, but Samantha became a friend. Once I stopped perceiving the family as a group in need and started looking at them as one of my own, the walls I had unintentionally built up fell down. My first real glimpse at empathy.

Another lesson came from Barb, the woman who helps coordinate the mission trips and Community Center in Rattlesnake Ridge. She has devoted her time and energy not to one week in the Appalachian Mountains, but to a lifetime of service. Barb saw a need, made a plan, and figured the rest out as she went along. Young children have been able to sleep on a mattress and graduate from high school because of her ability to put on construction boots and walk for miles.

The idea of a "mission trip" takes on an entirely new meaning for me now. It means more than coming out to help a family and leaving feeling like you were the one changed by the experience. A "mission" trip means immersing ourselves within the culture of the people who we, as a team, are traveling to see. It's not simply serving others, but serving alongside families in Christ. We are not going out into the world to help others strictly for the purpose of building a sturdier house or hoping to change lives for the better but to be in community with one another. To extend our family. To love. To love not because of sympathy, but because we are all humans deserving of the love that our Creator gives to us.

2013 Sandy Springs Christian Church VBS...Fun was had by all!!
Leslie Raymer, Minister for Children and Families

Boy, did we have a good time in VBS this year as we experienced a week of fun, fellowship, and service in God's Backyard Bible Camp.  We had 50 children in attendance who learned each day about serving family, friends, our community, and Jesus.   Our campers were watched over by 9 middle schoolers, 9 upper elementary kids, and 4 senior high schoolers who worked hard all week as counselors and junior counselors.

We began each day in our tents in Dunlap Hall as Danny led us in prayer.  Then we were off to a day filled with cool crafts with Courtney and Chris, stupendous snacks (prepared by Rani, Florene, and Darby), great stories (told by Sharon, Lynn, Mary Michael, Katie), free play on the playground under the watchful eye of Bryant, games led by Caroline and Chris, service projects (with Barb, Mary Ann, Nancy T, Nancy M, and Bert), and of course, music with Larri!  We ended the week with a VBS water park in the morning and then reconvened in the evening for a church wide movie celebration.  Many thanks to everyone who made this year's VBS a great success!!

Please go to Sky Drive to view all the pictures from VBS!  A week to remember!

Please mark your calendars for September 13th and 14th because SSCC will be presenting a speaker you will NOT want to miss.  Her name is Nadia Bolz-Weber, founding pastor of House for All Sinners and Saints, an Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA)---a mission church in Denver, CO.  She is considered a leading voice in the emerging church movement.

Ms. Bolz-Weber is the author of Salvation on the Small Screen? 24 Hours of Christian Television, and her new book, Pastrix:  The Cranky, Beautiful Faith of a Sinner & Saint, will be released days before she arrives at SSCC.  She does not look like your typical pastor, but then, her story is also not typical.  Her website states, "Heavily tattooed and no holds barred, Nadia, a former stand-up comic, sure as hell didn't consider herself to be religious leader material - until the day she ended up leading a friend's funeral in a smoky downtown comedy club."  Phylis Tickle, author of "The Great Emergence," says this about her:  "Nadia Bolz-Weber has probably done more than any other pastor in recent times to poke therapeutic fun at the misdemeanors and flaws of overly-churched Christianity and Christians.  The passion behind her words, however, is as deeply pastoral as it is God-drenched and liberating..."

If you would like to experience the magic of Nadia Bolz-Weber, watch her on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kM9Y5S3UYi8.
