The seminar on 'How to Manage Quality in (Professional) Higher Education? - A Practical Approach' is a 2-day event focusing on the management of quality (assurance) in higher education institutions organised in Vilnius (Lithuania) on 3-4 December 2014.

CC by-nc-nd by Vaidotas Miseikis

It is intended to inspire institutional management, as well as staff members, and all stakeholders (e.g. students, world of work representatives, policy-makers) who are managing, coordinating and involved in quality in higher education institutions; bringing together a 'community of practice'.

To support institutions in implementing quality assurance, next to two previous hands-on seminars on internal quality assurance in 2012 and 2013, Lucien Bollaert, recognised expert in European quality assurance, has developed with the support of EURASHE's working group on quality assurance A Manual for Internal Quality Assurance in Higher Education - with a special focus on professional higher education. It will serve as the backbone to the seminar.

Speakers include:
  • Lucien Bollaert, Member of the Executive Board of the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO) (Netherlands/Belgium-Flanders)
  • Andreas G. Orphanides, President of EURASHE, Rector of European University Cyprus (EUC) (Cyprus)
  • Marieke Janssen, Head of the Quality Care and Educational Development Unit of University College Ghent (HoGent) (Belgium)
  • Klara Engels-Perenyi, Policy Officer at European Commission, DG Education and Culture (Belgium)
  • Maria Kelo, Director of the European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA) (Belgium)
  • Asnate Kazoka, Steering Committee Member of the QA Experts Pool of the European Students' Union (ESU) (Belgium)
  • Catherine Owen, Researcher at University of Glasgow (United Kingdom)
  • Nora Skaburskiene, Acting Director of Centre for Quality Assessment of Higher Education (SKVC) (Lithuania)
  • Gintautas Braziunas, Rector of Vilniaus Kolegija/University of Applied Sciences (VIKO) (Lithuania)

Registrations open in the coming days.
The registration fee is set at 300 EUR, members of EURASHE and regional participants (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) will benefit from a reduced rate of 150 EUR.
Each participant will receive a free copy of the Manual.

The PHExcel report on Quality Tools for Professional Higher Education Review and Improvement is now available for download in our online library here.

The report is the first outcome of the project, and provides an overview of quality tools, quality models and quality labels, currently in use in (professional) higher education.

It is followed by a gap analysis as regards the Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area (ESG), and the identified characteristics of PHE.

The underlying data of the report is progressively being made available on the PHExcel website here, through an interactive comparison tool for browsing and comparing data between all or selected quality models and/or labels.

The next stage in the PHExcel initiative is the development of a Quality Framework for Professional Higher Education Excellence responding to what constitutes PHE in Europe and complying with the overarching basis for quality assurance in European higher education: the ESG. The PHExcel expert group is developing the draft quality framework, which will then go onto an evaluation and validation phase.

After two years of intense work by the seven stakeholder organisations (ENQA, ESU, EUA, EURASHE, BUSINESSEUROPE, EI and EQAR), and several rounds of consultations among stakeholders and ministerial representatives, the Bologna Follow-Up Group (BFUG) endorsed the revised version of the European Standards and Guidelines (ESG) on 19 September in Rome.

The text will be submitted for adoption at the next EHEA Ministerial Conference in May 2015 in Yerevan (Armenia).

The endorsed version of the revised ESG by the BFUG will be published online soon.

As part of the commitments taken by EHEA Ministers in the 2012 Bucharest Communiqu to develop a system of voluntary peer learning and a pilot project to promote peer learning on the social dimension of higher education, the Peer Learning Initiative for the Social Dimension (PL4SD) project was launched.

In a first round of data collection in summer 2013, ministries and stakeholders from 25 countries contributed 230 measures on the social dimension in higher education to a database on www.pl4sd.eu. You can contribute to the second collection phase on the website.

This database can provide you with inspiration and contacts for your own institution.

EURASHE is also active in the IDEAS project. This project will come up with innovative initiatives and projects in the sphere of social inclusion of students.
