We need your help to build a new Sun Bear enclosure!

Desi, Kevin, and Hilda are fully-grown adult sun bears that were rescued by OFI.  Over the past year, they were introduced to each other and are now happily living together - but, now that they're together, they need a bigger, better home!

Sun Bears

This short film was made by Patrick Rouxel, a French filmmaker and a dedicated volunteer who has spent the last three years at the OFI's Orangutan Care Center and Quarantine (OCCQ) helping to look after the sun bears and other ex-captive animals that OFI has rescued in addition to orangutans.

"Kevin, Desi and Hilda are victims of deforestation and human greed, and have done nothing to deserve life imprisonment in solitary confinement. As a friend of these three bears, it is for me a moral obligation to do what I can to help them. I cannot give them back their freedom, because captive adult sun bears don't have the skills to readjust to life in the wild, but I can give them a better place to live."

- Patrick Rouxel, OFI volunteer and filmmaker

The Story of Sun Bear Cubs Bernie and Wawang:

Join a journey of success and struggles to give these special animals a second chance

"...Slowly the forest became a part of them and they became a part of it. The young wild bear in each of them became more present while the captive frustrated cub disappeared. They accepted me as a substitute mother and came to me when in need of affection. My presence chased away the eventual wild bears in the area and helped make the forest around the camp become Bernie's and Wawang's territory..."
