Went to see "Heaven is for Real" yesterday.  Good movie.  The Gospel was not spelled out as clearly as it was in "God's not dead".  I think this was more geared to get people thinking and hoping.  Maybe some who don't know Him will ask their Christian friends about Jesus.  Also, Happy Mother's Day!  Say a little prayer for Mary DePra, my mom, who put up with a very strong-willed, obnoxious, first born son and let him live without crushing his spirit!

Food for Thought...

I believe our nation is headed for very hard, even disastrous times.  I do not believe politics will fix our economy - it's too far gone - too much debt to ever pay back.  We depend completely on our fragile technological infrastructure for food, water, shelter, transportation, and entertainment.  Any number of events could cause a sudden  collapse of our system e.g., electric grid collapse from terrorism, natural event like solar flare, simple breakdown from lack of modernization, or Israel attacks Iran and the price of oil skyrockets, or China stops buying our treasury bonds.  I am feeling called to prepare for such disaster by working to be less dependent and more self-sufficient.  If you have interest in or questions about this line of thinking, please e-mail me by replying to this e-mail.  Below are some of my favorite links:

   Hosea 14:9

Who is wise?  Let them realize these things.
    Who is discerning? Let them understand.
The ways of the Lord are right;
    the righteous walk in them,
    but the rebellious stumble in them.

God's concern for justice that requires faithfulness and love that offers forgiveness can be seen in his dealings with Hosea. We can err by forgetting God's love and feeling that our sins are hopeless, but we can also err by forgetting his wrath against our sins and thinking he will continue to accept us no matter how we act. Forgiveness is a key word: when God forgives us, he judges the sin but shows mercy to the sinner. We should never be afraid to come to God for a clean slate and a renewed life.

 John 21:20-25

20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, "Lord, who is going to betray you?") 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, "Lord, what about him?"

22 Jesus answered, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me."  How often are we so worried about what others are doing that we stop trying to determine what it means to follow Jesus.  23 Because of this, the rumor spread among the believers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?"

Jesus sounds a little snarky here.  Maybe John wrote the snarkiness in.  Probably Jesus was simply reminding Peter that everyone has their individual purpose and work to do in following Him.  We n

24 This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true.

25 Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.  Makes me wonder about all the other stuff He did.  It must mean that what is in the Bible is the important stuff for us to know and understand.
