ArtSandySprings Begins 3rd Year
 Greetings!

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.

ARTSS at the Sandy Springs Festival
Thanks to Sandy Springs Hospitality for a Great Location at the Festival!

Where do we begin to thank Sandy Springs Hospitality and Tourism for all it does to promote our efforts?  We benefited greatly this past spring from the outstanding publicity that our organization received during ARTSSpring in April and May.  Hospitality and Tourism generously printed our ARTSSpring calendar as part of their newsletter, Living it Upscale in Sandy Springs, which is distributed to over 40,000 residents and businesses throughout the state of Georgia.  And, here they go again this fall by helping us with our efforts to reach the community.   They invited ARTSS to share a booth with them giving us a premier location at the entrance gate to the Sandy Springs Festival.

ARTSS looks forward to working with them again this spring.  Kym Hughes, Executive Director, and her team will be coordinating SS Firemen water the plantersall the artists for ARTSSpring this year and creating, once again, a calendar filled with events for our community to enjoy.  ARTSS will be hosting the Second Annual Sculpture Juried Event and Gala on May 15, 2010.  ARTSS will be working in conjunction with Hospitality and Tourism to make ARTSSpring, yet again, an exciting month for the city of Sandy Springs!

Once agSS Firemen water the plantersain, the winning sculpture will be donated to the City of Sandy Springs.  David Landis' Tumble, the winner for 2008, is currently on display at the Sandy Springs Library.  All sculptures are on the market, and they are listed on the web site with their respective prices.

Labyrith at the Library Reading Garden
Thanks to our volunteers....The Reading Garden Is Nearly Completed....

Laura Jones
, Chair of the Installation Project, reports that the completion of the labyrinth at the Reading Garden at the Sandy Springs Library is just in sight.   And what a site it is!  With the help of over 30 children from Crossroads Second Chance North School, these eager beavers dug in and began preparing the garden's lay-out and design.  Local landscape architect, Ross Bongiovi, worked on the initial physical construction of the labyrinth's design, which was created by Louise Estabrook, a Fulton County extension agent.  Louise even brought in her own specialists by recruiting the North Georgia Master Gardeners.

The labyrinth is alLabyrith project final day crewmost finished; and in its center, there will be the "Pole for Peace," which was purchased through the support of our own local Heards Ferry Elementary's Girl Scout Troop #26304 and Candace Apple of the Phoenix and Dragon Bookstore.  The phrase "May Peace Prevail on Earth" will be inscribed in 16 languages on the pole.  Thanks to Terranova, a local landscape design firm, there is at the center of the labyrinth a boulder which adds just the finishing touch.

Various ARTSS members - Bernadine Richard, Laura Jones, Candace Apple - provided not only their financial support but also their physical labor.  Two of the city's local garden clubs - the Sandy Springs Garden Club and
the Magnolia Garden Club - made generous contributions to the project which
provided for magnolia trees, azaleas, and other plant materials.  Future plans for this community garden include a children's reading area and a Shakespearean Garden.

Kudos, also, to Ralph Daniels and Linda Dixon from Fulton County Commissioner Tom Lowe's office for all their hard work behind the scenes to get this project "off the ground.

When the azaleas are in bloom this spring, ARTSS extends an open invitation to the community for an official unveiling of this unique community project.
