2016-17 budget approved, posted online
The District 15 Board of Education approved a budget for the 2016-17 fiscal year during its September 14 meeting. The document can now be viewed online in its entirety at www.ccsd15.net | Our Services | Business and Auxiliary Services | Financial Documents | School District 15 Budget, July 1, 2016-June 30, 2017. The budget outlines approximately $151.6 million in operating fund revenues and $151.4 million of operating fund expenditures, resulting in a projected $207,631 surplus. The proposed budget would increase the District's year-end fund balance to approximately $66 million, or 39.8 percent of the District's budget. Michael Adamczyk, SFO, Chief School Business Official, will explain the budget's impact on the District's long-term economic outlook when he presents updated five-year financial projections during the District 15 Board of Education's November 9 business meeting.

October 13 Parent Education Night to address suicide prevention
Parents of seventh- and eighth-grade students will receive information on suicide prevention during the District's next Parent Education Night, which will be held Thursday, October 13, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Walter R. Sundling Junior High, 1100 N. Smith Street, Palatine. The evening's presentation will offer parents practical advice from the Signs of Suicide (SOS) program that all District 15 junior highs will be presenting to their students this fall. SOS is a school-based suicide prevention program listed in the National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices that addresses suicide risk and depression while reducing suicide attempts. The goals of the SOS program are straightforward: - To help students understand that depression is a treatable illness.
- To explain that suicide is a preventable tragedy that often occurs as a result of untreated depression.
- To provide students training in how to identify serious depression in themselves or a friend.
- To impress upon youth that they can help themselves or a friend by taking the simple step of talking to a responsible adult about their concerns.
- To help students know whom in the school they can turn to for help if they need it.
This presentation will feature a screening of the short film Time to Act, which all junior high students will view and discuss in late October and early November. Paul Budin, District 15's Coordinator of Social Workers, and staff members from area mental health agencies will also be available during the presentation to answer questions and discuss their programs and services for adolescents struggling with depression. Read more about the SOS Parent Education Night.

Have a 'ball' at the Foundation's D15 Staff Volleyball Tournament
The one-five Foundation will host its fourth charity sports event -- a D15 Staff Volleyball Tournament -- on Saturday, November 12, at Winston Campus. "We believe that community building and school spirit can be gained from students supporting their home school teams during the tournament," said Chris Svec, Chairman of the Foundation's Board of Trustees. "The games will bring the entire District 15 community together to celebrate sport, healthy competition, and fun!" The tournament will feature competitive and exhibition divisions, and it will guarantee that each staff-rostered team will play in a minimum of two 30-minute matches. Top teams will receive grants and event T-shirts, but only the tournament's champions will take home the top prize -- a $300 grant and the Foundation's traveling trophy. Fans will also have an opportunity to help their school's team take home a prize. On game day, staff and students -- as well as their families -- can put on their spirit wear and pack the stands at Winston Campus, as the school with the most fans in attendance will receive a $100 Spirit Grant. Tickets are only $1 (children age 2 and under are free), and refreshments will be available for purchase at the event. All proceeds from the Foundation's Staff Volleyball Tournament will be used by the Foundation to fund programming throughout District 15 schools.

Jane Addams School receives a $1,700 physical education grant for pedometers
Jane Addams School's P.E. Department was recently awarded a roughly $1,700 grant by the Illinois Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. The grant money will be used to purchase wireless pedometers to track students' steps and activity time. Data from the pedometers can be synced to a program that tracks each student's progress over time. "The pedometers will be a great tool for students because they will assist students in self-assessing their activity levels during their lessons, and help motivate them to work hard," said Jordan Walker, a P.E. teacher at Jane Addams.

Thomas Jefferson goes goo-goo for ga-ga ball
Thomas Jefferson School recently purchased two ga-ga ball pits for its playground area -- one for younger students, and one for older ones. The Thomas Jefferson community will be able to enjoy its new ga-ga ball pits for many years to come thanks to Ryan Johnson, the school's P.E. teacher; Alessandra Kennedy, a fifth-grade teacher; Jennifer Riehman, the school's assistant principal; and Larry Sasso, Thomas Jefferson Principal, as their efforts brought the project to fruition. So what is ga-ga ball? Ga-ga originated in Israel, but has grown in popularity worldwide throughout the years. Recently, neighboring school districts, park districts, churches, and other recreational facilities have adopted ga-ga as a safe, fun, active game that all age groups could enjoy and play at the same time. Ga-ga is a variant of dodgeball that is played with one ball in a large fenced in area (usually an octagon or hexagon) called a ga-ga pit. The game combines dodging, striking, running, and jumping, with the object of being the last person standing. The game can be played by a group of individual players or with teams, as well as in one-on-one matches. A game of ga-ga begins when one player throws the ball into the air; while their backs are against the pit wall, the players shout "Ga!" on each of the first three bounces. After three bounces, the ball is in play, and the players may leave the wall and "hit" the ball at each other in the pit. A player who is hit by the ball or breaks a rule is eliminated and must leave the game. Players may not "hit" the ball twice in a row, and a player who causes the ball to leave the pit is out. When the ball is caught in the air on a fly, the last person to hit the ball is out. For more information on the game, or details about the ga-ga ball pit, contact Ryan Johnson, Thomas Jefferson P.E. teacher, at johnsor1@ccsd15.net.
