Do you C.A.R.E.? Then apply today!
Attention D15 residents interested in working part-time with school-age children: employment opportunities are available across the District, and likely at your neighborhood school! The Palatine and Rolling Meadows Park Districts are currently recruiting qualified staff for District 15's Children's Activity, Recreation, and Enrichment Program, or C.A.R.E. C.A.R.E. is a collaborative venture between District 15 and the park districts that provides high-quality and affordable before- and after-school childcare to students in kindergarten through sixth grade in each D15 elementary school. During the 2015-16 school year, enrollment in this incredibly popular program increased from about 650 students to around 850, as the park districts significantly increased their staffing to accommodate a greater number of students. To continue to offer this program at this level -- and to potentially reduce waiting lists that still exist at some D15 schools -- they are now seeking to hire parents, grandparents, high school students, or any D15 community members who ... - Are at least 17 years old and have a desire to work with school-age children.
- Are caring, positive, punctual, dependable, enthusiastic, and energetic role models.
- Demonstrate strong customer service skills and can effectively communicate to and build strong relationships with children and adults.
- Can interact with and supervise children, and can plan and implement a variety of age-appropriate recreational, enrichment, and group activities.
- Care about and can attend to individual participants' needs.
- Can attend training and staff meetings and follow all Park District and District 15 policies and procedures.
When school is in session, C.A.R.E.'s before-school program begins at 7 a.m. each weekday morning, and runs until the school day begins at each site. C.A.R.E.'s after-school program begins when each school dismisses in the afternoon, and runs until 6 p.m. each evening. C.A.R.E. staff typically work between 15 and 23 hours a week, and their pay ranges from $8.25 to $10.50 per hour depending upon their experience. If this kind of part-time employment opportunity interests you, don't hesitate. Visit the employment sections of the Palatine and Rolling Meadows Park Districts' websites to learn more or to apply to become part of District 15's C.A.R.E. staff.

Families should apply each year to participate in the free and reduced-price meal program
To make certain that their children qualify to receive free or reduced-price meals, families must file a new application with School Nutrition Services. Families should do so each year, even if they've participated in the program in the past. To ensure timely processing, applications should be submitted no later than the week of September 26. The District will continue to provide free or reduced-price meals through Wednesday, September 28, to any student who qualified for the program last year, but has not yet applied and qualified to participate this year. On Thursday, September 29, students from families who have not re-applied will no longer be enrolled in the program, and will not receive free or reduced-price meals until a new application is submitted and qualifications to participate in the program are reviewed. Read more about free and reduced-price meal applications.

Young Entrepreneurs Academy application deadline extended to Friday, September 30
During its September 14 meeting, the District 15 Board of Education recognized students who participated last year in the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) sponsored by the Palatine Area Chamber of Commerce.
Last year, 15 students from District 15's four junior highs completed the YEA! program, launching a total of 13 businesses.
This year, the Chamber is once again inviting District 15's seventh and eighth graders to join YEA! In fact, it has extended its application deadline to participate in program to Friday, September 30.
YEA! is for students who are creative, work hard to do their best both inside and outside of school, effectively communicate, and are committed to improving their community. YEA! will walk select students who fit this description through the entire business creation process -- brain-storming ideas, writing business plans, pitching to potential investors, and registering with governmental agencies -- all the way to actually launching and running their business or social movement. The YEA! curriculum is delivered by local leaders of industry, community members, educators, and entrepreneurs. It provides students with a focused introduction to the business world that will help them transition successfully to adulthood; pursue their dreams by harnessing their creativity and energy; develop an entrepreneurial mindset and leadership skills based on personal principles and values; and transform their ideas into tangible enterprises that create economic and social value for a better world. Lincoln School gets a Little Free Library
Lincoln School dedicated its new Little Free Library on Thursday, September 8, in celebration of International Literacy Day. Little Free Libraries belong to everyone. Their guiding premise is "Take a Book, Return a Book," and anyone may use a Little Free Library. Books can be shared with others, or returned to any Little Free Library location. Little Free Libraries offer a free way to share good things to read. The project was directed by Maria Schlup, a reading specialist at Lincoln School who installed a Little Free Library at Falcon Park last fall with the help of Kathy Hatzold, a retired program assistant at Lincoln, and her husband, Bill Hatzold. The Little Free Library at Lincoln was funded by Chick and Gloria Schultze, two community members who read an article about the Falcon Park project in the Daily Herald. Their two daughters, both of whom are now doctors, began their educational careers at Lincoln, so they decided to work with Mrs. Schlup to create a Little Free Library at Lincoln as a way to give back to the school that gave their daughters such a great start. Lincoln was honored to have the Schultzes on hand for the Little Free Library's grand opening ceremony. Joining them were Jim Schwantz, Mayor of the Village of Palatine, Scott Thompson, Ed.D., District 15 Superintendent of Schools, and a group of Lincoln students who read more than 1,000 minutes over the summer break.

Also, Photo's sold hotdogs, the Virginia Lake PTA provided members with drinks and popcorn, and everyone enjoyed free popsicles and ice cream treats. "It was a beautiful night and a great way to celebrate the friendships that have formed and the community that has come together as a result of the 50 years of teaching and learning that have occurred at this wonderful school," said Kristine Seifert, Virginia Lake School Principal.
