Three D15 junior highs sending students
to state MATHCOUNTS competition

Students from three District 15 junior high MATHCOUNTS teams are headed to state after an outstanding performance by the District's mathletes at the North Suburban Chapter of the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers' MATHCOUNTS competition.

The competition was held February 6 at Oakton Community College.

For the third year in a row, Kinllen P., an eighth grader at Winston Campus Junior High, advanced to compete as an individual in the state MATHCOUNTS competition after finishing second in the overall competition and second in the oral countdown round.

The MATHCOUNTS teams from Walter R. Sundling Junior High and Plum Grove Junior High will join him, as their top-five finishes also qualified them to compete at the state competition, which will be held Saturday, March 19, in Lisle. Sundling (pictured above) placed second in the competition, and Plum Grove finished fifth.

Two other District 15 teams placed among the competitions' top 10, but did not qualify to advance to state. Winston Campus Junior High finished in eighth place, and Marion Jordan School took 10th place.

In individual competition, 17 District 15 students scored among the top 50 of the more than 194 students who participated in the chapter contest.

D15 music students recognized
for their outstanding performances
Music students from across the District excelled recently at the North Shore Jazz Festival and the Illinois Grade School Music Association's annual Solo and Ensemble Contest.

North Shore Jazz Festival
The Walter R. Sundling Junior High Jazz Band was awarded a superior rating and received an overall ranking of second place out of the 11 bands participating in the 39th Annual North Shore Jazz Festival held January 23 at Glenbrook South High School in Glenview. During the festival, Joey R., an eighth-grade bass player, was also awarded the North Shore Music Institute Scholarship.

IGSMA Solo and Ensemble Contest
Hundreds of band, orchestra, piano, and vocal music students from District 15 performed in the Illinois Grade School Music Association's annual Solo and Ensemble Contest held February 6 at MacArthur Middle School in Prospect Heights.

Judges rated the students' performances and awarded them medals in four divisions: perfect, superior, excellent, and good.

District 15 students presented 276 pieces for the contest, and judges awarded perfect ratings to 43 of those performances, which featured a total of 54 students.

Sixth graders compete in D15 2-Ball contest
More than 300 sixth graders participated in the annual District 15 2-Ball Competition, which was held February 9 and 10 at the Palatine Community Center.

In 2-Ball, teams of two players shoot from various spots on the floor to try to accumulate as many points as they can in two different minute-long rounds.

For the District competition, which was sponsored by the District's physical education teachers, each elementary school was represented by five sets of girls and five sets of boys, and medals were awarded to the top six teams in both the small and large school divisions.

In the boys' competition, Chris S. and Brendan R. from Hunting Ridge School won first place in the large school division with 106 points, and Amar P. and Bo O. from Marion Jordan School won first place in the small school division with 108 points.

In the girls' competition, Kylie W. and Jill S. from Hunting Ridge School won first place in the large school division with 83 points, and Madina S. and Katelyn B. from Frank C. Whiteley School won first place in the small school division with 77 points.
Thirty-six D15 student artists make
state in PTA's Reflections program

District 15 students recently received 36 Reflections arts education program honors awarded by Illinois PTA District 37.

reflections logo Reflections is a national PTA program that asks students to create works of art based on an annual theme. This year's theme was "Let Your Imagination Fly," and students created works of art to reflect that theme in six different categories: visual arts, photography, musical composition, literature, dance choreography, and film/video production.

The program has several levels. Judging first takes place within individual schools' PTAs, and then within the Northwest Suburban Council (NWSC) of PTA/PTSA, which represents District 15. The NWSC selected 88 submissions by District 15 students for judging by Illinois PTA District 37. Students whose works were selected by the NWSC were recognized at the January 27 Reflections Showcase at Carl Sandburg Junior High.

Illinois PTA District 37 reviewed nearly 1,500 projects and selected works of art submitted by 36 D15 students to be judged in the state Reflections program:
