District 15 administers Illinois 5Essentials survey to improve student learning
Community Consolidated School District 15 will join the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) in the fourth statewide survey of school climate and learning conditions. The Illinois 5Essentials Survey provides a unique opportunity for teachers, students, and parents to have a voice in improving their schools. It is open through Friday, March 11. Teachers, students, and parents will be asked to take a 20-minute research-based survey to help identify strengths and weaknesses in their school's learning environment. This survey will serve as an opportunity for schools to reflect on progress since the last statewide implementation. The Illinois 5Essentials Survey provides a comprehensive picture of a school's organizational culture in an individualized report measuring five "essentials" critical for school success: - Effective Leaders
- Collaborative Teachers
- Involved Families
- Supportive Environment
- Ambitious Instruction

Plum Grove eighth grader takes first place in District 15 and North Cook spelling bees
Lekha D., an eighth grader at Plum Grove Junior High and the 2016 District 15 Spelling Bee champ, has advanced to the regional competition that could send her to nationals.
Lekha won the District 15 Spelling Bee, which qualified her to compete in the 6th Annual North Cook ISC Scripps Spelling Bee. That contest was held February 2 at Joseph Sears School in Kenilworth, where she again took first place. Lekha will now advance to the Regional ISC Championship Competition on Wednesday, February 17, at McClure Junior High in Western Springs. There she will compete against the first-, second-, and third-place winners from the Northern, Southern, and Western Suburban Cook Spelling Bees for an all-expenses-paid trip to the Washington, D.C., area at the end of May to participate in the 89th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee. This journey began for Lekha when she won the District 15 Spelling Bee, which was held January 14 at Walter R. Sundling Junior High, by correctly spelling "relinquished" in the competition's 57th round. Reetika S., a seventh grader at Walter R. Sundling Junior High, finished second after incorrectly spelling "sensei" a round earlier. Rutvi P., a sixth grader at Virginia Lake School and the 2015 winner of the District 15 Spelling Bee, finished third after incorrectly spelling the word "amalgam" in the competition's 53rd round. Lekha, Reetika, and Rutvi won their respective school spelling bees to advance to the District competition, as did 16 other students:

Hunting Ridge makes back-to-back-to-back appearances at state LEGO tournament
For the third consecutive year, the LEGO Hawks, Hunting Ridge School's FIRST® LEGO® League team, qualified to compete at the state tournament by turning in an all-around impressive performance at their regional competition.
To compete in FIRST LEGO League tournaments, teams must build robots out of LEGOS and program them to accomplish specific maneuvers and tasks related to the theme of the year's challenge. This year's theme, the TRASH TREK Challenge, required teams to identify problems with the way trash is made and handled, design innovative solutions to the problems they select, and share their problems and solutions with others. It also challenged them to use LEGO MINDSTORMS® technology to build, test, and program an autonomous robot to manage a mix of challenges and activities related to issues ranging from trash collection, to sorting, smart production, and reuse.
The LEGO Hawks' research project focused on ways to prevent plastic bags from reaching waterways. They decided grocery stores would be good places to inform consumers about the dangers of plastic bags, so they created signs that paired concise text with hand-drawn images of the plight faced by many sea creatures due to errant plastic bags, and posted them at cash registers in the Rolling Meadows Jewel-Osco store.
Then, at the regional tournament held December 20 at Quest Academy, the team's robot had the fourth highest score out of 16 teams. The LEGO Hawks also won the award for best robot design thanks to the team's explanation to judges about their design process and the overall functionality of the robot. This performance and the strength of the team's research projected propelled the LEGO Hawks to the Illinois FIRST LEGO League Northern Championship Tournament held January 16 at Elgin Community College, where Hunting Ridge competed against 63 other teams and placed 23rd over all. Members of the LEGO Hawks are sixth graders Pranav B., Madelyn D., Natasha J., Ola K., Reese K., Samantha K., Rachel M., Michael M., Snehasri P., and Sophie R. They were coached by Shane Jensen, a sixth-grade teacher at Hunting Ridge.
Thanks Motorola! This year, FIRST LEGO League teams in District 15 were once again made possible by a $12,000 grant the District Fifteen Educational Foundation received as part of the Innovation Generation grant program from the Motorola Solutions Foundation, the charitable and philanthropic arm of Motorola Solutions, Inc.
