Two D15 teachers successfully renew
their National Board Certification

Two District 15 teachers have successfully renewed their certification as National Board Certified Teachers with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards:
Donna Morris

  • Donna Morris, a reading specialist at Stuart R. Paddock School, renewed her certification in Early and Middle Childhood Literacy: Reading-Language Arts.
  • Gina Van Wyk, a sixth-grade teacher at Jane Addams School, renewed her certification as a Middle Childhood Generalist.

Their renewals mean District 15 remains among the state's leaders in number of National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) with a total of 67.

Gina Van Wyk

"Please join us in congratulating these dedicated professional educators," said Carole Einhorn, District 15's Teacher Induction Facilitator.

National Board Certification is an advanced teaching credential achieved upon successful completion of a voluntary assessment program designed to recognize effective and accomplished teachers who meet high standards based on what teachers should know and be able to do.

"The National Board renewal process is rigorous and time consuming," said Mrs. Einhorn. "It requires participants to reflect on their accomplishments since their original National Board Certification and to provide evidence of how those accomplishments have significantly impacted student learning. They must demonstrate their ongoing commitment to professional growth in their roles as teachers, as leaders, and as learners."

D15 students' art earns 88 Reflections honors
District 15 students recently received 88 Reflections arts education program honors awarded by the Northwest Suburban Council (NWSC) of PTA/PTSA.

reflections logoReflections is a national PTA program that asks students to create works of art based on an annual theme. This year's theme was "Let Your Imagination Fly," and students created works of art to reflect that theme in six different categories: visual arts, photography, musical composition, literature, dance choreography, and film/video production.

The program has several levels. Judging first takes place within individual school PTAs, and then within the NWSC, which represents District 15. The NWSC selected 88 submissions by District 15 students for judging at the regional level by Illinois PTA District 37.

Students whose works were selected by the NWSC will be recognized at the Reflections Showcase on Wednesday, January 27, from 6-8 p.m. at Carl Sandburg Junior High, 2600 Martin Lane, Rolling Meadows.

Those 88 submissions recognized by the NWSC will now be judged by the Illinois PTA District 37, which will review nearly 1,500 projects and select 50 to 60 of those works of art to be judged in the state Reflections program in February.

Get well soon ... and at home, please!
health exam artTo help control the spread of illness within the classroom, parents/guardians should keep their sick children at home, and are urged to report any communicable disease diagnosis to their schools.

Students with any of the following symptoms should be kept home until they are well, and-if they are at school-their parents will be contacted to pick them up:
  • a fever of 100 or greater
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • undiagnosed rash
  • communicable diseases such as chicken pox, measles, etc.
  • pink eye (conjunctivitis)

An ill or injured student who is sent home will only be released to the parent/guardian or emergency contact provided by the parent/guardian. That is why it is important that the school has accurate phone numbers for parents and/or emergency contacts. Please notify the school office immediately with any changes in this contact information.

Before returning to school, a child must be 24-hour free of:

  • fever (child must be fever-free without medication for 24 hours before returning to school)
  • diarrhea
  • vomiting
  • or have completed 24 hours of antibiotics.

It is required that parents/guardians call their child's school to report their child's absence. To help control the spread of illness within the classroom, parents/guardians are urged to report any communicable disease diagnosis to the school.

My Meal Time Just a reminder: MealTimeŽ Online, the program parents use to make deposits to their children's meal accounts, offers benefits besides the ability to make a real-time payment to a student's account.

For instance, parents can sign up to receive low-balance notifications via e-mail, and avoid paper slips that can get lost in their child's backpack.

Parents can also apply for free and/or reduced-price meal benefits online.

All that parents need to access these features is their child's six-digit student identification number, which is also the PIN number they use to purchase their meals.
