Results from first PARCC exam indicate D15 students outperformed state averages
The Illinois State Board of Education released last week district- and school-level results of the first administration of the new Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) exam. Those scores indicate that District 15 students performed at higher levels when compared to the state. In the area of English/language arts (ELA), more than 55 percent of District 15 students met or exceeded standards, compared to the state range of 31 percent to 38 percent. For math, 42 percent of District 15 students met or exceeded standards, compared to the state range of 17 percent to 36 percent. Additionally, each grade level in District 15 outscored the state in both ELA and math. "The transition from the ISAT to the PARCC exam produced a smaller change for District 15 than was demonstrated across the state," said Thomas Edgar, Ph.D., District 15's Director for Assessment, Accountability, and Programs. "This indicates that our curricula is effective and continues to have a positive impact upon our students." The PARCC assessment replaced the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) last year, and was given last spring to all students in Grades 3-8 and to select high school students based on their course enrollment. This transition to PARCC marked a significant change in how students' knowledge of grade-level standards are assessed. The difference between these two tests is significant: the PARCC exam is a much more rigorous test, requires students to demonstrate their knowledge in more authentic and complex ways, and is scored by the state in a different way. Earlier this year, the state released its preliminary state-level PARCC results. During this release, Tony Smith, Ph.D., State Superintendent of Schools, emphasized that the PARCC exam is a completely different type of assessment, and that PARCC results should be considered a baseline from which school districts can measure their progress. According to the state, district- and school-level PARCC results can be viewed online at www.illinoisreportcard.com. District 15 plans to send home individual student results before the start of winter break. PARRC information, including how to read your student's results and additional parent resources, can be found online at understandthescore.org | Score Report Guide. Read more about PARCC results.

Board approves official 2017-18 calendar
The District 15 Board of Education approved the official 2017-18 school calendar during its December 9 meeting.
The calendar aligns with Township High School District 211's plans to change next year to collegiate calendars that begin earlier in August to allow for the first semester to be completed prior to winter break. District 15 chose to adjust its calendars in accordance with District 211's changes because many families send children to schools in both districts, and those families have asked the districts to make their calendars coincide as much as possible.
Key dates are as follows:
- Beginning of the School Year: Staff Institute Days are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, August 14 and 15. Grades 1-8 will begin classes on Wednesday, August 16. Kindergarten and early childhood classes will begin on Thursday, August 17.
- Thanksgiving: Thanksgiving will be celebrated on Thursday, November 23. There will be no school that week, but parent-teacher conferences will be held on Monday and Tuesday, November 20 and 21.
- Winter Break: There will be no school from Monday, December 25, through Friday, January 5, with schools reopening on Monday, January 8.
- Spring Break: There will be no school Monday, March 26, through Monday, April 2, with schools reopening Tuesday, April 3.
- End of the School Year: The last day of school -- including snow days -- will be Wednesday, June 5. Depending upon the number of snow days used, the last day of school will be moved back accordingly at the April 2018 Board meeting.
