District 15 Board accepting
applications to fill vacant seat
Manjula Sriram
Manjula Sriram
The District 15 Board of Education is accepting résumés to fill Manjula Sriram's seat. Ms. Sriram resigned for personal reasons. Her resignation became effective by law upon its filing with the Board Secretary on Tuesday, November 24.

Ms. Sriram was first elected to the District 15 Board of Education in 2011, and was re-elected to a second term in 2015.

With more than 868 days left to serve in her four-year term, Illinois School Code requires the Board to appoint a successor within 45 days from the date the vacancy occurred to serve until the next election in 2017.

Residents* who are interested in being appointed to fill the vacancy through April 2017, and who meet the legal qualifications to be a Board member, have until 4 p.m. on Friday, December 18, to electronically submit their résumé/application to fill this vacant seat to the office of the Board Secretary (beckerj@ccsd15.net). Late applications will not be accepted for any reason. Résumés should include: length of time in the community; community service; children in the District (past or present); knowledge of District 15 issues; and educational background.

The Board will review the résumés/applications and conduct personal interviews of select applicants. It is anticipated that the Board will make its appointment on or before Thursday, January 7, which is within the 45-day statutory deadline for filling the seat. The new member would be administered the oath of office at the Board's regular meeting on Wednesday, January 13.

For more information, contact June Becker, Board Secretary, at 847-963-3208 or beckerj@ccsd15.net.

* Who can apply? Residents of District 15 who are 18 years of age or older, have lived in the District for at least one year, and are registered to vote in District 15 (and not a registered sex offender).
District 15 donates 'space shuttle bus'
to Boy Scouts' Blackhawk Area Council

NASA retired its space shuttle program in 2011. Now, District 15 has conducted its last mission aboard its "space shuttle bus" that traveled the streets of Palatine and Rolling Meadows for the past 18 years.

The District donated the vehicle -- whose body is a 1987 school bus -- to the Blackhawk Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Transportation personnel actually delivered it to its new home -- Camp Lowden in Oregon, Illinois -- over Thanksgiving recess. There, the Boy Scouts plan to adapt it to their own curriculum that will incorporate scouting merit badges and STEM programs. In fact, Camp Lowden has a 21-foot dome that will be used as a planetarium and will serve as the shuttle's new mission control center when it is ready to begin welcoming Boy Scouts aboard later this spring.

District 15 donated the bus to the Boy Scouts after it bid farewell to the David Hill Mission Control Center and Space Shuttle program at the close of the 2014-15 school year.

Is your emergency contact
information up to date?

In an emergency, District 15 will contact students' parents using the phone numbers listed in its School Messenger database.

The District tested the School Messenger system on Sunday, November 22, by sending an informational message reminding parents of conferences and Thanksgiving break.

If you did not receive this message, please contact your school to update your emergency contact information.
Winter School Bus
Winter is on its way!
Time to review school closing procedures
and cold weather recess policies

District 15 takes the responsibility of deciding whether to close schools seriously. Generally, schools will remain open except for extremely inclement weather. Snow, ice, and extremely cold temperatures may affect bus pick-up and drop-off times, sometimes causing buses to run late.

In instances when either extremely cold temperatures and/or considerable snowfall exist, District 15 may make the decision to cancel school (see Severe Cold Response Plan).

Snow DayWhen severe weather conditions exist, parents must decide whether their children can get to school safely. Even when the District decides to keep schools open, parents should review their own situation to determine if they should send their children to school. As a parent or guardian, you are also responsible for making alternative arrangements for your child's care in the event that schools are closed due to inclement weather. If the possibility exists that a parent or older sibling will not be home, we encourage parents to designate an alternate destination for the children if school dismisses early due to inclement weather or an unforeseen circumstance.

If you do decide to keep your child home on a day in which the weather is extremely inclement but schools are not closed, your child will be marked absent, but the absence will not count against any attendance incentive programs and your child will be given every opportunity to make up missed work.

Emergency School Closings
If a snow day is called, that decision will be made by 5 a.m. and, shortly afterward, announcements will be made via ...
  • Phone -- District 15 uses the phone system School Messenger to call the phone number(s) listed in the District's database. That phone system is able to call every phone number in the District in about 15 minutes. Please contact your school office if your phone number has changed or you wish to add additional phone numbers to contact.
  • E-mail -- D15 E-News will send parents an e-mail announcing any school closures to the e-mail address(es) listed on their child's school registration form. Parents can add additional e-mail addresses by visiting www.ccsd15.net and entering the e-mail addresses in the "Join Our D15 E-News List" box.
  • District 15 Web (www.ccsd15.net / District Announcements) -- If classes are cancelled due to inclement weather, an announcement will also be posted on the District and School homepages, as well as in its "Emergency School Closings" section.
  • Radio, TV, and Emergency Closing Center -- Should a snow day be called, District 15 will inform radio stations WGN-AM 720, WBBM-AM 780, and WGN-FM 105.9, and TV stations CBS-2, NBC-5, ABC-7, WGN-9, FOX-32, and CLTV News; and the Emergency Closing Center on the web -- search for DIST #15 (Palatine, Rolling Meadows, Hoffman Estates), or the name of your school. The announcement on the radio and TV describes our district as "District 15, Palatine, Rolling Meadows, Cook County."
  • Recorded Message -- News of a snow day will also be shared via a recorded message available at the District's main number, 847-963-3000.
Cold weather recess
winter-clothing-girls.jpgStudents generally go outside for recess every day, so they should be dressed appropriately. Exceptions are made only when a child brings a doctor's note excusing him/her from outdoor recess, or when weather conditions force recess indoors.

Indoor recess is determined based on the following guidelines:
  • If the temperature outside, together with the wind chill, is below 0°F, all students will remain inside for the entire lunch hour.
  • If the temperature outside, together with the wind chill, is between 0°F and 10°F, the preferred procedure is a rotation of 20 minutes for lunch, a 20-minute outdoor recess, and a 20-minute indoor recess. However, at the principal's discretion, students may be kept inside for the entire lunch hour.
  • If the temperature outside, together with the wind chill, is above 10°F, students will have regular outdoor recess.
Other considerations in which indoor recess is allowed include poor conditions on the playground and the presence of precipitation.

For indoor recess, students are supervised in their classrooms.
