From the Superintendent
November 16, 2015

Dear Parent/Guardian,

With winter approaching, I want to share our new plans for responding to severe cold weather. All of our extreme weather decisions focus on the safety of students and staff members.

The National Weather Service created guidelines that will now be used to determine if classes will be cancelled due to frigid temperatures. The Severe Cold Response Plan outlines these guidelines.

The decision to close schools will typically be made by 5 a.m. You will be notified via e-mail and automated phone call. (An informational message will be sent on Sunday, November 22, to remind you of conferences and Thanksgiving break. If you do not receive this message, please contact your school to correct your contact information.)

If weather forecasts indicate a possible school closing, parents or guardians would be wise in making alternative arrangements for childcare in the event that schools are closed. For this reason, you should be prepared to answer the following question the night prior to a possible closing:

If school should be closed tomorrow for inclement weather or an emergency, who would care for and supervise my child?

As the parent or guardian, you ultimately make the decision whether to send your child to school when weather conditions are questionable. This year, we implemented the Here Comes the Bus GPS program to help you make this decision. If your child rides a bus, please use this program to determine the best time to have your child at the bus stop.

Together, let's ensure that all of our children arrive at school safely to enjoy the quality educational experience our teachers and staff work hard to provide them.

Best regards,

Scott B. Thompson

PARCC results from the 2014-15 school year
Last school year, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) replaced the Illinois Standards Achievement Test with the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) exam.

This change has delayed ISBE's release of student PARCC results from last March. Although a specific date has not been set, ISBE reports that it plans to provide student PARCC results to school districts in December.

More information on the 2014-15 PARCC results can be found in a PARCC Parent Letter (English / Spanish) from Thomas Edgar, Ph.D., Director of Assessment, Accountability, and Programs, and a PARCC FAQ (English / Spanish) on the District's PARCC webpage

Plan ahead by reviewing District 15's
2016-17 and 2017-18 school calendars

The Board of Education approved District 15's 2016-17 school calendar in March, and -- during its November 11 meeting -- it got its first look at the District's 2017-18 school calendar proposal.

Both calendars align to Township High School District 211's plans to change next year to a collegiate calendar that begins earlier in August to allow for the first semester to be completed prior to winter break. District 15 chose to adjust its calendars in accordance with District 211's changes because many families send children to schools in both districts, and those families have asked the districts to make their calendars coincide as much as possible.

Key dates are as follows:

Official 2016-17 School Calendar
  • Beginning of the School Year: Staff Institute Days are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, August 15 and 16. Grades 1-8 begin classes on Wednesday, August 17. Kindergarten and early childhood classes begin on Thursday, August 18.
  • Thanksgiving: Thanksgiving will be celebrated on Thursday, November 24. There will be no school that week, but parent-teacher conferences will be held on Monday and Tuesday, November 21 and 22.
  • Winter Break: There will be no school from Monday, December 26, through Friday, January 6, with schools reopening on Monday, January 9.
  • Spring Break: There will be no school Monday, March 27, through Friday, March 31, with schools reopening Monday, April 3.
  • End of the School Year: The last day of school will be Tuesday, June 6. However, if any of five built-in inclement weather days are not used, the school year will be shortened accordingly.
Any changes to the Official 2016-17 School Calendar will be communicated in multiple formats.

Proposed 2017-18 School Calendar
  • Beginning of the School Year: Staff Institute Days are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, August 14 and 15. Grades 1-8 would begin classes on Wednesday, August 16. Kindergarten and early childhood classes would begin on Thursday, August 17.
  • Thanksgiving: Thanksgiving will be celebrated on Thursday, November 23. There will be no school that week, but parent-teacher conferences will be held on Monday and Tuesday, November 20 and 21.
  • Winter Break: There would be no school from Monday, December 25, through Friday, January 5, with schools reopening on Monday, January 8.
  • Spring Break: There would be no school Monday, March 26, through Monday, April 2, with schools reopening Tuesday, April 3.
  • End of the School Year: The last day of school would be Wednesday, June 5. However, if any of five built-in inclement weather days are not used, the school year will be shortened accordingly.

Any changes to the Proposed 2017-18 School Calendar will be communicated in multiple formats.

D15 Board to adopt 2015 tax levy in December
District 15 presented its 2015 property tax levy proposal at its November 11 Board of Education meeting.

The proposal includes the slight increase in property tax revenue that the tax cap allows each year for inflation and new growth, and it would likely result in a 2015 extension increase of 1.1 percent (0.8 percent for inflation and 0.3 percent for an estimated $10 million in new growth) to approximately $117.9 million.

On the District 15 portion of a resident's property tax bill, the increase would equate to roughly $8 per $100,000 of property value.

The Board will approve a levy proposal when it adopts the final 2015 Aggregate Tax Levy during its next regular meeting on Wednesday, December 9.

Comments on the Proposed Tax Levy 2015 may be made using Let's Talk.
