Superintendent's Report-Recognition -- Tom Narey Eagle Scout Project: Scott Thompson, Ed.D., Superintendent of Schools, introduced the Board to Tom Narey, a junior at Fremd High School, and thanked him for choosing to complete his Eagle Scout project at Walter R. Sundling Junior High. Tom then shared with the Board that his love of baseball and his memories of muddy practices at Sundling's baseball field led him to install drainage tiles to reduce the amount of standing water on the third-base side of the field following storms. He also installed benches with back rests for players and parents to enjoy when they use the field.
ED-RED Council/Legislation: It was reported that the state has still not reached a budget resolution, but the it has approved K-12 funding. It was noted, however, that the state has yet to fund the social services agencies that the District partners with to serve a significant number its students and families, so it must continue to monitor the state's budget situation, as it does not have the resources, itself, to fill the void that would be left if these agencies continue to go unfunded.
District Fifteen Educational Foundation: It was reported that the Foundation's D15 Staff Volleyball Tournament will be held Saturday, November 14, at 9 a.m. at Winston Campus.
Review of Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) Resolutions/Recommendations: The Board agreed to create a consensus list of Illinois Association of School Boards' (IASB) Legislative Committee Resolutions/Recommendations to be endorsed and/or opposed by District 15 Board members and administration at the annual meeting of the IASB Delegate Assembly to be held on November 21.
Citizens Address the Board: No citizens chose to address the Board.
Approval of Life Safety Amendments for 2016 and 2017: The Board approved the list of life safety projects to be submitted to the Illinois State Board of Education for approval. The list includes all items that must be corrected within one year, and some items that must be corrected within five years but -- in the opinion of the District's architect -- would be more cost effective to complete in conjunction with other high priority items. The lists total approximately $27.2 million in projects -- $14 million for 2016, and $13.2 million for 2017. Those costs are the most updated estimates available, and they account for work that was completed over the summer of 2015. Board certification of the work to be completed is required.
Also during the meeting:
- The Board approved the October 14, 2015, Personnel Report, as presented.
