District 15 receives six
'Those Who Excel' awards

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) recognized each of District 15's six nominees with awards in its prestigious "Those Who Excel" awards program this year.

Each year, ISBE's "Those Who Excel" awards program honors outstanding teachers, administrators, student support personnel, educational service personnel, and community members for their exceptional contributions to schools throughout the state. Candidates are nominated by their local schools or people in their communities. Letters of recommendation are also required. A committee of peers, including representatives from statewide education organizations and former award recipients, determines the level of recognition nominees will receive -- Excellence, Merit, or Recognition.

District 15's honorees will receive two Awards of Excellence, two Awards of Merit, and two Awards of Recognition when they are recognized at ISBE's "Those Who Excel" Banquet, which will be held Saturday, October 17, at the Marriott Bloomington-Normal Conference Center in Normal.
  • Dr. Laura Swanlund, the coordinator of the District's psychology department and its Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Response to Intervention (RTI) programs, will receive an Award of Excellence in the "School Administrator" category.
  • Kristin Fortunato, the secretary at Gray M. Sanborn School, will receive an Award of Excellence in the "Educational Service Personnel" category.
  • Cynthia Zeivel, a fifth-grade teacher at Frank C. Whiteley School, will receive an Award of Merit in the "Classroom Teacher" category.
  • Cynthia Wong, a school social worker at Willow Bend School, will receive an Award of Merit in the "Student Support Staff" category.
  • Chelsea Blanchfield, a third-grade teacher at Stuart R. Paddock School, will receive an Award of Recognition in the "Early Career Educator" category.
  • Hunting Ridge School's Front Office Team -- Julie Simpson, Corry Hamilton, and Teresa Ostoich -- will receive an Award of Recognition in the "Team" category.

Families should apply each year to participate
in the free and reduced-price meal program

To make certain that their children qualify to receive free or reduced-price meals, families must file a new application with School Nutrition Services.
My Meal Time
Families should do so each year, even if they've participated in the program in the past
.

To ensure timely processing, applications should be submitted no later the week of September 28. The District will continue to provide free or reduced-price meals through Friday, October 2, to any student who qualified for the program last year, but has not yet applied and qualified to participate this year.

On Monday, October 5, students from families who have not re-applied will no longer be enrolled in the program, and will not receive free or reduced-price meals until an new application is submitted and  qualifications to participate in the program are reviewed.

This year, in particular, it is important for all families interested in participating in the free and reduced-price meal program to submit new applications. In years past, students whose families received food stamps or Medicaid were automatically enrolled in the program by the state. However, recent statewide changes to the program's participation guidelines mean qualifying for Medicaid no longer qualifies a student for automatic enrollment.

Additionally, automatic enrollment information provided by the state is sometimes incorrect for students who have changed schools or districts. Submitting a new application each year ensures that this information is up-to-date, and thereby ensures that these students continue to receive their free or reduced-price meals.

Of course, changes in a family's income may mean it no longer qualifies to participate in the program. Submitting a new application will help families make this determination and adjust accordingly.

Free and reduced-price meal applications are available at all District 15 schools. Parents can also complete the application online using MealTimeŽ Online and their child's six-digit student identification number. That number can be found on their child's student assignment sheet, and is also the PIN number their child enters when served his or her meals.

For more information, visit the MealTime Online website, or contact School Nutrition Services at 847-963-3928.

PTA workshop will teach parents
how to respond to a school crisis

The Northwest Suburban Council of PTA/PTSA is inviting parents of District 15 students to attend its first presentation of the 2015-16 school year, a parent education workshop titled Parent Roles and Responsibilities During a School Crisis: D15 School Crisis Management Plan.

The workshop will be held Monday, September 28, at 7 p.m. at Walter R. Sundling Junior High, 1100 N. Smith Street, Palatine.

During the workshop, Officer Jeff Schlee of the Palatine Police Department will teach parents their roles and responsibilities if a crisis should occur at a school their children attend. Parents will learn what to do if they ever get that phone call or e-mail informing them that such an incident has occurred, and what to do if they are inside a school when a crisis occurs. Should a crisis ever occur, it is the responsibility of everyone -- first responders, school officials, and parents -- to do their part to minimize the chaos that has occurred and rebuild as a community.
