TODAY we celebrate girls around the world!
UN International Day of the Girl Child

Globally, over 600 million girls struggle to overcome violence and inequality.
In South Sudan, young women face obstacles unlike any other place in the world.

In fact, a 13 year old girl in South Sudan is more than twice as likely to die in pregnancy or childbirth than to make it through primary school and into secondary education.

Teach a Woman, and You Teach a Nation
Daniel Gai, South Sudan Director
Malek Secondary Girls

My personal passion for girls' education developed rapidly due to the efforts made by both PESS and our partner She's the First, both dedicated to making it possible for girls to have an education by sponsorship and leadership development. Girls are selected from PESS primary schools in Bor, Jonglei State. Our focus is on secondary school sponsorships since only 0.8% of girls attend school and graduate due to traditional early arranged marriage.

Ten girls are currently being sponsored by our partner She's the First with more in the pipeline! It's amazing to see the girls' personal and academic growth in the process. Girls' sponsorship is the most direct and impactful way to break the cycle of low school enrollment in South Sudan.

  • Sponsorship boosts a girl's self-confidence in continuing her education to completion of the secondary level.
  •  Sponsored girls are dedicated to higher education and become more able to compete as active, educated members of their communities than unsponsored girls.
  • We educate parents of sponsored girls and involve them in the process, which makes them less likely to force an early arranged marriage.

Help create the future female leaders in South Sudan by becoming a sponsor and changing a girl's destiny.

Yuol Ayor Riak, Form 1

Langbaar Secondary Academy

Currently, in South Sudan there are just 400 girls in the last grade of secondary school, the worst enrollment rates for secondary education in the world. Girls face extreme disadvantages in education, so for
sisters the challenges are even higher.

However, for Amuor Ayor Riak and Yuol Ayor Riak--sisters and former students at Ayak Angeui Girls Primary School, the dream has been realized. We are proud to share that BOTH girls are in Form 1 (freshman year) at Langbaar Modern Academy in Bortown.

Both girls are excelling and doing incredibly well in their studies. We are so proud of their accomplishments and eager to see what each girl does in the future. Thank you for believing in their potential with us!

Countless young girls are still waiting for the opportunity to fulfill their dreams and attend school. Our secondary students are sponsored through She's the First, our partner organization that supports girls' education in the developing world. STF fosters leadership and global awareness in young female Americans by inspiring them to lead creative fundraisers and correspond with sponsored students.
