Stories of Success
PESS Summer Series: Part 1
Dear PESS Supporter,
We are thrilled to announce our new Summer Series: Stories of Success which features PESS students who are beating the odds and fearlessly pursuing their education in South Sudan.
This month we showcase the success of girls. Research continues to show that educating girls is one of the most effective ways to combat poverty. Not only will an educated girl marry later in life, but she will have fewer children that are more than twice as likely to receive their own education. She will be three times less likely to contract HIV and will immunize her own family against preventable diseases. Truly, an educated girl has the power to not only change her own community, but change the world.
In South Sudan, one of the most difficult countries in the world, only 0.8% of girls attend primary school and even fewer than that continue on to secondary. The situation is dire, yet despite all the obstacles, girls in South Sudan are fighting for education. In part one of our Summer Series, PESS is honored to showcase the amazing determination and hard work of three very special girls, former students at Ayak Anguei Girls Primary School and Tong Pagook Primary School, who have beat the odds and matriculated to secondary school!
