Ollie's Offerings
Lent is a 40 day journey that remembers Jesus' 40 days of fasting and testing in the wilderness. Having just been baptized, Jesus was driven into the wilderness by God's Spirit. There, he resisted temptation by relying on Scripture. When he emerged out of the wilderness his public ministry began!
In church history, even as early as 325 CE there were mentions of "40 days of fasting" as part of a pre-Easter baptismal ritual for converts to Christianity. Soon, the forty days of fasting and prayer became a season--not just for those joining the Church-but for the whole of the Church. The word "Lent" comes to us from the Anglo-Saxon word "lengten." They called the spring season "Lengten" because the days were lengthening. Springtime is about new life, longer and warmer days. This explains the symbols of eggs, bunnies and flowers...all signs of new life!
Throughout Scripture "40" is a symbolic number that represents a full time period. It rained 40 days and nights during the great flood. The Israelites wandered in the wilderness for 40 years. Elijah walked 40 days to Horeb, the mountain of God. Moses and Elijah fasted 40 days.
This Sunday marks the First Sunday in Lent. Our Lenten journey has begun. In this season of turning our lives more completely over to Christ and his way of life, let us join together in worship, prayer, fasting, and acts of generosity that our devotion and discipleship might grow and strengthen. Let us observe a holy Lent in the hope that God shall surprise us with the joy and new life of the risen Christ.
"Always pray and never give up." - Luke 18:1

| Additional Security
Beginning Tuesday, February 19 there will be additional security procedures in place at APC. While there have been no recent issues or incidents, we feel these changes will enhance the safety and security of our facility. Two exterior doors that have previously been open will be locked (Academy Street and the Dayschool lobby door) as well as one interior door (the downstairs hallway door leading to the Dayschool). Monday through Friday, these doors will be locked between 9:10am and 12:45pm. Anyone needing access to the building between those hours should go to the Dayschool lobby door for business relating to the school. There will be a volunteer to let you in at the upstairs lobby or go to the church office for all other needs. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
