Cabin fever is running rampant at the Garley house! A rumor is the Arctic Vortex will leave Minneapolis for a while. If true, we will have warmer temperatures in the teens.

According to Merriam Webster online, cabin fever is "extreme irritability and restlessness from living in isolation or a confined indoor area for a prolonged time." So here are some "cures" for everyone!

The cats have it easy - they don't know it is really cold out unless they are sitting on the window sills. My favorite game for cats is to clear off all the surfaces in the bathroom. Put a ping pong ball and cat in the bathtub. Let the fun begin!

For dogs, here are several options:

  • Bring out old toys. A game of tug is always fun.
  • Hide treats around the house. Then have her hunt and eat.
  • Find your notes from training and do 5 - 10 minute training reviews of  sit, stay, down, and touch the hand. Great brain exercise.
  • Play indoor games. Have him sit at the top or bottom of the steps and throw a toy or a ball. Great aerobic exercise.
  • Teach a new trick or fine tune an old trick. Does she do something cute? Make it a trick.
  • For more ideas, check out Beat the Cold with Indoor Dog Activities from the Star Tribune. Have fun!

For people, here are some suggestions:

  • Find the book you wanted to read, and give yourself a book holiday.
  • Pull out a jigsaw puzzle. We are on our fourth since January 2nd with a total of 4,500 pieces. (Why isn't Elaine getting anything done - major addiction!)
  • Call a friend who you keep thinking about.
  • Enjoy the time with your pets. They love when you sit with them and quietly stroke them.

Most of all stay warm and safe. In a few weeks the Winter Olympics begin! Yes, another favorite of mine.

Take care,

Elaine
