Greetings!

With the Supreme Court Decision on the Affordable Care Act last month, there is a little less uncertainty about health care transformation efforts. And let us be clear - there is still a great deal that is unknown and developing on a daily basis here in Oregon.  It is exciting and challenging.

The Board of Directors of Project Access NOW has been closely following health care environmental developments over the last two years, and especially over the last few months. We want to assure you that our efforts continue to meet today's needs while preparing ourselves for the changing needs of our community over time.

During the course of our strategic discussions it became clear that Project Access NOW needed an updated Mission Statement to allow for flexibility in light of the changing realities in health care. While we have confidence that our developing system will be better than our current one, estimates are that there will still be over 100,000 uninsured people in the metro area in 2019 - five years after national reform is implemented. There is still work for us to do and we need a Mission Statement that reflects our purpose in this dynamic environment.

Drum roll please . . . .

The mission of Project Access NOW is to improve the health of our community by creating access to care and services for those most in need.

The Board of Directors of a Community Profit organization (Non-Profit for those of you who prefer the IRS nomenclature) is critical to its ability to thrive. Project Access NOW has an amazingly talented and committed Board of Directors whose members have invested hundreds of hours of work into creating the strategic framework to guide our efforts over the next few years. We are grateful to all of them!

We are especially grateful to the four directors who have recently completed their terms of service with Project Access NOW. Judge Hicks, Rob Delf, Alan Melnick and Sheila Hale have all served our community with integrity and passion. Judge and Sheila will be continuing their involvement on board committees and we are so happy to have them remain connected to our work.

Sincerely,

Linda Nilsen-Solares
Executive Director

Melissa's story
Melissa A. photoThe organization Melissa works for does not provide health insurance, so she works a second job to make ends meet.

Melissa began to suffer pain in her shoulder and chest. She was not sure if the pain was a result of the curvature of her spine or if there was something else going on. Then she found herself nauseated and exhausted. Other symptoms included difficulty talking, losing her voice, and pain upon coughing or swallowing. Her thyroid had been removed in 2002 due to cancer. When she started coughing up blood, she became concerned that her cancer may have returned.
Thanking Dr. Reynolds
Dr. Roger Reynolds photoWhen Dr. Roger Reynolds and his partners at the Maple Street Clinic in Hillsboro were approached about volunteering with Project Access NOW a couple of years ago, they readily agreed.

Dr. Reynolds says Project Access NOW is an efficient system for providing care to the uninsured. There is more assistance available and it's easier to get the necessary additional procedures and services that a patient may need. Without Project Access NOW, uninsured patients have much greater difficulty getting care.

Board member profile: Adam Nemer
Adam Nemer photoAdam Nemer first became involved with Project Access NOW when, as Chief Financial Officer at Kaiser Sunnyside Hospital, he was asked to represent Kaiser Permanente as a member of the hospital equity group that convenes several times each year to review each hospital system's participation in support of Project Access NOW. Adam observed how the power of data transparency can drive participation among organizations and people in providing services to the underserved. Two years ago, he became Kaiser's Care Delivery Finance Officer in the Northwest and is accountable for the financial performance of Kaiser's Care Delivery system in Oregon and Washington.

Community volunteer highlight: Molly Olson
Molly Olson photoWhen Molly Olson was looking for a way to give back to the community, she went to the head of Intel's Oregon Community Programs. This Intel program matches nonprofit organizations with Intel employees who have particular business, management, or technical skills. The organization not only benefits from the time and expertise the volunteer brings, but for every volunteer hour logged, Intel donates $10 to the organization.

Molly was given information about five organizations to consider and Project Access NOW's mission immediately resonated with her. Project Access NOW solves a serious problem, one to which Molly has a close connection. With a sister and brother who are both uninsured, Molly knows first-hand the challenges they face.

New staff profile: Janet Lara
Janet Lara photoJanet Lara was looking for a job with steady hours and a schedule that would allow her to be home more with her new baby. She has prior experience working for dental health care providers. Her friend Perla Quiroz is a Care Coordination Specialist at Project Access NOW and suggested she apply for an open position that had come available. Janet got the job and fit right in with the rest of the Project Access NOW team.

As a Care Coordination Specialist, Janet answers phone inquiries, discusses program information with new clients, processes enrollment applications, and provides overall customer service. She enjoys her job and says, "Project Access NOW fills an important need in the community, and it feels good to be a part of that."
