SAFETY REMINDER
KPD

Enjoy the summer days but also play it safe.
Residents are encouraged to practice these important safety tips:
  • Keep all windows, doors including garage doors closed and locked
  • Wait to post your vacation photos to social media until after you have returned
  • If you have an alarm, turn it ON every time you leave your home
  • Lock and secure all vehicles parked in the driveway
  • Call 9-1-1 immediately if they observe any person or vehicle in their neighborhood that appears to be suspicious.
KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE
TOO THIS SUMMER

Remember when running out to do errands, leave your canine or feline furry friend at home or leave the air-conditioner running to keep your pet safe from heatstroke while your are out of the car.  Parking in the shade and or leaving windows cracked will not help your pet to keep cool.

Canine body temperature is primarily regulated through respiration (i.e., panting). If a dog's respiratory tract cannot evacuate heat quickly enough, heatstroke can occur.

In a matter of just a few minutes, a dog can be overcome by the heat. Temperatures in a closed automobile will rise approximately:
  • 19 degrees in 10 minutes
  • 29 degrees in 20 minutes
  • 34 degrees in 30 minutes
  • 43 degrees in an hour
BE A FOSTER HERO
Consider being a Safe Humane Foster Hero and save a pet's life.  Safe Humane Chicago is an innovative organization that was founded to make communities safer by reducing violence for our children and companion animals.

Safe Humane's newest undertaking, Foster Heroes, is an adjunct to our current Court Case Dogs program. Court Case Dogs have "done the time but not the crime" - victims of neglect or abuse who have been rescued by police and animal control and are associated with criminal court cases against their abusers. They are assessed, socialized and trained to be wonderful family companions, and transferred to partner rescue groups throughout Chicago and the suburbs. But before these rescues can place them, the dogs must be quarantined for a short period to ensure they are not infectious. But finding pet-free homes is no easy task. There are organizations waiting to find loving families for these deserving companion animals once their health is confirmed, which is why Foster Heroes is so vital to saving these dogs.

YOU CAN BE THE FIRST STEP TO THEIR SECOND CHANCE.  All it takes is:
  • A 2-4 week commitment
  • A home with no pets
  • Previous dog experience helpful but not required
There is NO cost to become a Foster Hero and any prescriptions and medical costs are fully covered; such as dog beds, dishes, food, and toys.  Also professional training is provided as needed.
