RADON KITS January is National Radon Action Month. Radon is an odorless and colorless gas naturally found in rock and soil that can seep into homes from the soil through cracks in the basement floor and foundation, crawl spaces, poorly sealed sump pumps, floor drains, porous cinder block walls and other foundation floor and wall penetrations. The highest radon gas readings are normally found in the basement and first floor levels of homes and apartments. The best time to check for radon is during cold weather when windows and doors remain closed. Test kits are available through the Lake County Health Department for $10.00. The cost includes return postage, laboratory analysis and interpretation by Health Department staff. Test kits are also available from area hardware and building supply stores.

Admission to the Lake County Discovery Museum in Wauconda is free for people 62 and over during the entire month of January. The museum has many hands-on interactive exhibits covering many very interesting and surprising things about Lake County. The museum also displays the nation's largest permanent exhibition on the history and significance of postcards. Changing exhibits in special exhibition galleries take inspiration from art, history and popular culture. It is worth a trip. A MESSAGE FROM
Due to the recent extreme weather conditions, Waste Management will not be picking up Christmas trees this week.
We are delaying the pickup by one week in order to get caught up from the non-service day on Monday January 6th. We plan on being all caught up on the trash and recycling by the end of the day on Saturday. Please note that trucks may be coming at different than usual times so please make sure the material is out early for pickup and to leave it at the curb until end of the day on Saturday.
Unfortunately, due to the extreme cold we have seen a spike in the amount of truck breakdowns both off and on the roads but We are committed to providing exceptional uninterrupted service to as many residents as possible.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
