Magnificently Easy Hikes in NH

There's no shortage of advice if you want to hike the rugged trails of the White Mountains. But there aren't many guides for those interested in the gentler, family friendly paths that cut through our forests. NHPR's Sean Hurley recently took a walk in the woods with New Hampshire trail expert Steve Smith to compile a list of 10 magnificent - and magnificently easy - wilderness walks.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE:

Courtesy Photo: http://tiltonfarmersmarket.com/
Governor Maggie Hassan chose the Tilton Farmers' Market as the perfect spot to sign into law New Hampshire's new Farm-to-Plate legislation.

This law establishes state policy "to encourage and support local food producers, farming, and fisheries, including businesses engaged in agriculture, the raising and care of livestock, dairy, fishing, foraging, and aquaculture, agritourism, horticulture, orchard management, maple syrup production, and the associated local and regional businesses that process, purchase, distribute, and sell such food throughout the state."

If you spend your professional or civic life focused on food or the food system, please join the New Hampshire Food Strategy a regional gathering to connect with others and shape their network and strategy. All are welcome.

Attend a regional gathering in your area to:

  • Have the opportunity to shape a state-wide Food Strategy to better our food system
  • Learn about trends, data, challenges, and innovations in our food system
  • Network with others doing work in the food system
  • Identify some actions for reaching our food system goals

Concord Monitor: Under a new initiative, the food pantry is turning to local farmers and gardeners in the hopes they will donate their surplus fruit, vegetables or produce.

NHPR: It's the height of the harvest season, and New Hampshire's farmers continue to look for ways to make the business of small farming profitable in an age of industrial agriculture.   On the Seacoast, one group of farmers is using technology and cooperation to expand beyond the farmers market.

Nashua Telegraph: The hobbyist farmers at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Nashua are busy harvesting vegetables in their new raised garden beds, courtesy of efforts from Fidelity Investments, that provide benefits to the club's kids.

Boscawen, N.H. - On August 8, 2014, the Friends of the Northern Rail Trail in Merrimack County (FNRT-MC) finished building 2 miles of new trail in Boscawen, from Depot Street to just north of the Hannah Dustin Park & Ride near the Concord city line.

All are invited to the official opening of the Northern Rail Trail and ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday, October 4 from 10 a.m. to noon (Rain Date: Sunday, Oct. 5) at Jamie Welch Park on Depot Street in Boscawen, N.H.
