NH CATCH Kids Club 5-Year Report: Embracing Healthy Out-of-School Time in New Hampshire



In celebration of all of our CATCH Kids Club afterschool and summer camp sites during the past five years of implementing the Growing Up Healthy Grant from Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation, we've highlighted five of our sites that have empowered us along the journey.

Second Annual NH Healthy Meals Cooking Challenge

November 17
11:00 - 1:00pm

The NH Farm to School Program would like to invite you all to attend! This challenge is open to high school culinary students as well as CACFP and public school food service workers.  

 

Teams are challenged to create a healthy school lunch that meets current USDA nutrition guidelines and utilizes local foods in the recipe.  

 

This years local ingredient is apples.  

 

They are also looking for judges to help determine the winners. If you would like to be a judge (which means you get to sample all of the recipes!) please contact Stacey.Purslow@unh.edu.  

End Childhood Obesity Innovation Challenge

Inaugural Wellness Fair    


ASHLAND - A generous HEAL Grant, promoting Healthy Eating, Active Living, brought the first of what is hoped to be an annual wellness fair to Ashland in October, and it was met with great enthusiasm by local residents.

Ashland Town Administrator Paul Branscombe worked to bring the HEAL grant to the town, and the newly formed Ashland HEAL Coalition then joined forces with Plymouth State University and the Public Health Network of Central New Hampshire to organize the event.

NHPR The Exchange: Overcoming Obesity in the Granite State

 

HEAL Director, Terry Johnson, was recently featured as a guest speaker on the popular NH Public Radio show The Exchange hosted by Laura Knoy during a segment titled "Overcoming Obesity in the Granite State". 

 

Along with Dr. Travis Harker, president-elect of the New Hampshire Medical Society and a family doctor at the Concord Family Health Center, they discuss the obesity epidemic and the newly released "F as in Fat" report by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Trust for America's Health. Thorntons Ferry Elementary School Sets World Record

Merrimack Journal: It's official. Thorntons Ferry School has set a world record in fitness.

In 2011, Thorntons Ferry School in Merrimack, was awarded the first HEAL (Healthy Eating, Active Living) Award as part of the New Hampshire Excellence in Education Award Program.

 

Since then, Thorntons Ferry School hasn't stopped moving forward.

 

On Sept. 27, more than 500 students and staff joined 1.3 million other JAM-mers from all over the country to take "Just A Minute" (JAM) out of their day for a fitness break and helped set a world record.

Milford High Flash Mob Raises Exercise Awareness 

 
Nashua Telegraph: A flash mob from Milford High School performed at the Pumpkin Festival.

Nashua Telegraph: Crowds stopped and stared at the surprise flash mob dancing near Town Hall at the Milford Oval on the evening of Oct. 6.

The flash mob was formed by a group of Milford High School students to raise awareness for the organization Fuel Up to Play 60, founded by the NFL and the National Dairy Council. It helps kids get more involved with exercise and to play for 60 minutes a day to get active.
