News from Uncle Howard & Aunt Dale
|

Dear Camp Families,
Camplified Entertainment (a rock concert with all sorts of bands and vocalists) was an entire day of super sounds last week. Who knows, one of these artists may even be the next superstar. In addition to the Rockwood Camper Director Day and Pool Party, there was the Junior, Senior, Grad, CIT's, and Interns Late Nite and The Genie Jamboree. The Bunk Skits were a hit(check out our YouTube site) ... but what was really cool, was an SRC camp-wide 5K Walk/Run Event. All staff and campers participated in this first ever happening. What a wonderful sight!!! Hope to bring the event back every year.
This week, Time Travelers Week, will see the Aladdins having a Pirate Adventure on Monday, the Sinbads having a Late Nite on Thursday, The RockRidge Cup Games Part II on Tuesday (hosted by our sister camp in Bucks County, Diamond Ridge), with the Sultan Super Scientists event on Wednesday ... all wrapping up with a Staff Variety Show presented to our superstar campers on Friday... and don't forget Through The Decades Dress Up Day T-Shirt Day on Wednesday ... just about anything goes.
Speaking of "looking ahead" ... you will be receiving the 2015 Early Enrollment Incentive Program for both S/R Camp and Rockwood Adventures Teen Travel (RWA) in a day or two. This is the ideal time to lock in the early enrollment tuition savings rate, while at the same time guaranteeing the ideal bunk placement for your child(ren) with friends. Simply complete the ENROLLMENT FORM and send it along with a $300 deposit per child by the last day of the camp season ... August 15, 2014... and remember that SRC is the only camp that offers a 100% refund guarantee on all deposits (by May 1, 2015). Not sure of a vacation time? ... don't worry ... the amount of weeks you choose can always be changed without penalty.
Referrals are humbly appreciated.
We thank you for the trust you have in us and appreciate you selecting SRC and RWA for your child's experience.

The Arts @ SRC
Week Five
The Arts at Sesame/Rockwood has been very busy over the past few weeks. We would like to congratulate our campers, once again, on a job well done performing our version of Mary Poppins in our Rockwood Broadway production!
This week our Sultan girls are busy creating lanterns during their Fine Arts classes. Our Rockwood campers whipped up some delicious chips and salsa during electives and created amazing cake-pops in clubs. Our campers participated in a brand new elective this week, bubble art. They used bubble wands and paint to create some very interesting works of art!
We are looking forward to a fun and art-filled week ahead!

The Aquatics @ SRC
Week Five
The expression "time flies when you are having fun" certainly applies to this summer! It is hard to believe that five weeks have flown by already. This past week was an instructionally focused week. We saw many of campers advancing in our American Red Cross swim program. The afternoons of the week have been filled with fun in sun down at the pool! On Tuesday we had our Rock 'N Roll Pool Party- it was a Rockin good time!!!
Does your camper need a new level or deep water band? Not a problem! Just have your camper come see us during TEAM or Fun swim and we will be happy to replace the band.
We can't wait for the fun week 6 has in store for us at the pool!
~ Josh Levinson & Phil "Captain Rocket" Kohler, Aquatics Directors

The Sports @ SRC
Week Five
This week Rockwood campers signed up to play in the 2 on 2 Basketball Tournament. Their games began on Tuesday to see what two individuals could work cooperatively to possibly win the week long tournament. Congratulations to all who participated! Thursday, the first ever SRC 5K, took place. The excitement and participation by both the campers and staff was unbelievable. Congratulations to all of our distance runners!

Outdoors @ SRC
Week Five
Greetings from the adventure course. Week 5???, what happened to the first 4 weeks, they just zipped by? Speaking of zipping by, the lines and the smiles on the campers' faces sure remain large at all 3 of our zip lines. Zipping is one of the fun things the campers get to do down at the adventure course, but all is not just fun down here at the course.
We make them work a little as well. Whether it be climbing up the rope ladder, the rock walls, crossing the Burma bridge, or pulling themselves across our all new creek traverse, the campers get to have fun while challenging themselves and they can't get enough.
~ Doug Zakin, Director Adventure/Ropes Course

The Special Events @ SRC
Week Five
If your campers came home last week and claimed they threw fruit loops at their counselors slathered in shaving creme... they weren't lying! We had a fun time in game show last week playing Derby Days, where we made our counselors do silly challenges. For our Rockwood campers, we played an SRC classic game, Monkey Ball, where campers threw sponges at an elevated-strung up beach ball (and also each other!) which cooled us off on those hot days! We were lucky to have the rain hold out on us Wednesday night for our Junior/Senior/Grad late night where we had Sam Sandler, a deaf illusionist, entertain us after a night of swimming and dining. Capping off our extremely busy and FUN week was the Genie Disco Jamboree! We moved and grooved and were even entertained by the Genie moms who performed a dance to "I Will Survive." I can't wait to show our campers what I have up my sleeves for this week, Time Traveler week!

Rockwood Adventures Teen Travel
Session Four

It's been a really great week in New England for the Rockwood Adventures Teen Travel campers! We've been all over New England and have more to see in the next 4 days. If you are near Bridgeport, Connecticut, be sure to put the Adventure Park at The Discovery Museum on your schedule! This aerial park has soooo many great treetop tours with different elements and ziplines. Wednesday we shot hoops at the Basketball Hall of Fame, visited the Seuss Memorial Sculpture Garden, dipped candles at Yankee Candle and saw the hilarious murder mystery, "Shear Madness" at The Charles Playhouse in Boston. Thursday we drove to the heart of New Hampshire to Polar Caves Park to check out all the cool caves there followed by the afternoon at Clark's Trading Post where we took the train ride, watched the trained bears and Chines Acrobat shows, got soaked on the bumper boats and went to the top of the climbing wall. Friday we learned lots of history at the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum, had lunch at Quincy Marketplace, took the boat shuttle to the Charlestown Navy Yard to tour the USS Constitution and then spent the evening cheering on the Lowell Spinners baseball team. Saturday we spent the day in Maine to visit one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world, Nubble Light, in York followed by a walk along the Marginal Way in Ogunquit, a lobster boat ride from Perkins Cove and time at the beach! The water is lots colder in Maine than at the Jersey shore! As I write this, it's Sunday morning and we're driving back to Maine to visit LL Bean, see the world's largest revolving globe at Delorme maps, visit Portland Headlight and spend some time at Palace Playland at Old Orchard Beach. We still have lots ahead with a day at Sun Mountain Adventure Park at Bromley Mountain, lots of water park and rides at Six Flags New England Amusement Park and Hurricane Harbor Water Park and a stop at The Rockland Bakery.
The Rockwood Adventures Highlights for 2015 was mailed to all current camp families. If you are interested in receiving the full teen travel information packet, call the office and a packet will be mailed to you in late August.

A Note from the Nurses
FEVERS AND ILLNESSES
No one wants to be ill, especially in the summer! According to the Center for Disease Control, a fever is defined as a temperature greater than 100.0 degrees fahrenheit.
Our protocol at camp is if you child has a fever of 100.0 degrees or greater, they must stay home till they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of a fever reducing medicines such as Tylenol, Motrin or Advil before they can return to camp. We also require your child to visit the Health Center in the morning for a temperature check before returning to their bunk after being out sick with a fever.
Diarrhea/Vomiting
Child must be symptom free for 24 hrs prior to returning to camp
Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis)
Child must be receiving an antibiotic for 24 hrs prior to returning to camp
Strep Throat
Child must be on an antibiotic and fever free for 24 hrs prior to returning to camp
If you have any questions regarding your child and any type of illness, please don't hesitate to contact us
Let's all stay rested and hydrated, especially on the hot days this summer. This will help avoid any illness which would spoil our summer fun!
