Here is what went on during Week 3:

Seuss on the Loose

News from Uncle Howard & Aunt Dale

Dear Camp Families,

Visiting Days last week was, as predicted, sunny, hot and humid. We even escaped the potential rain and storms on Thursday for the Sinbads and Senior/Grads. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for your many compliments and good wishes for a safe and happy summer.
Week Three brought out the fun characters as created by Dr. Seuss: the Cat In The Hat, the Lorax, Things 1 through 16 and a very happy Horton the Elephant. Friday brought much excitement to camp with the Seussical Carnival with rides, games, the 1 Fish 2 Fish Pool Party and the celebration of the National Sno-Cone Day.

This week at camp we honor some Extreme Adventures with a Genie and Aladdin Crayola Day, RockRidge Athletic Games, Sultan Super Scientists, the Yacht or
Not Games and a Rockwood Broadway Show. It all culminates with the Amazing Race and Jungle Pool Party. This week we'll also be hosting the Gaga Tournament, the first of two this summer. Good Luck campers!

Week Three

We hope you enjoyed your visit this week to camp as well as visiting us in the Rec Barn. Your campers were so excited to show off their creations! Hopefully, you had a chance to visit the art show to see the many wonderful, creative projects that our campers have made durning our first few weeks at camp. This week campers have been busy in Sesame Beads and Bangles making Dr. Seuss charm jewelry, or making one of a kind plaster bowls in Club, and enjoying Improv electives with Travis.

Campers and staff have been rehearsing everyday getting ready for their performance of Alice in Wonderland. Our actors and actresses will perform this wonderful rendition next Thursday. We all can't wait to see it. Best of luck to Anna, Chloe and the Theatre staff.

We love seeing the smiles on each of their faces as they create their masterpieces!

SWIMMING, SWIMMING, IN THE SWIMMING POOL...WHEN DAYS ARE HOT, WHEN DAYS ARE COLD, IN THE SWIMMING POOL...

It is hard to believe that three weeks have flown by so quickly! It is great to see the campers making great strides through our American Red Cross TEAM swim program. At the end of next week, a Swim Progress Report will be mailed home, outlining how your camper is progressing during instructional swim.

Our certified instructors and lifeguards continue ongoing staff development training,
focusing on delivering high quality swim instruction and safety drills.

This summer we are thrilled to be offering aquatics related Clubs and Electives for Rockwood campers. Some offerings so far have included: Wacky Pool Games, Water Polo, Rockwood Junior Lifeguards, Water Volleyball, Rockwood Record Book, and Water Basketball. We look forward to offering additional pool Electives for our Rockwood campers throughout the summer. The younger campers are enjoying Boating on Turtle Lake, Bumper Boats, and Foamation Station.

The Sports @ SRC
Week Three

Even with the heat and humidity campers had a great time at sports this week. We hope you enjoyed visiting camp and watching your All-Stars! We are excited about our two new additions to enhance our sports program, B-Fit and Junior Tennis. B-Fit is a high energy exercise program that teaches campers the importance of heart rate, core strength and overall importance of health and fitness. Junior Tennis introduces the Genies and Aladdins to the basics of tennis. They use rackets, a net and special tennis balls made for their age group. Coming up next week we have our GaGa tournament and the first leg of the RockRidge Cup here at Sesame/Rockwood. Go Campers!!!!

Outdoors @ SRC
Week Three

What a great week we have had at the Adventure Course. Even with a few rain drops, our campers have found that the driest place in camp is in the air. We have started a Traverse Club, which allows our Rockwood Juniors, Seniors and Grads the opportunity to come down and hone their climbing skills on our High Traverse for an entire week. For all our other campers, we have the Adventure Course Club running for them to enjoy.

This year the Sultans find themselves down at the Adventure Course weekly. Watching the Sultans climbing rock walls and zipping is a change from past years. They have proven to be fearless! I have chosen to open up several elements each week giving the Sultans and Sinbads an opportunity to challenge themselves on several elements weekly. They seem to enjoy the open forum.

As for the Aladdins, they are developing their climbing skills and preparing themselves for next year when they will get their chance at the Adventure Course.

The Special Events @ SRC
Week Three

Dr. Seuss was on the loose this week! Campers have been searching for hidden "Seusses" all over camp! This crazy hunt has been keeping  the kids on their toes all week long! During our "Seuss House Clean-Up", campers had to clean their "room" after Thing 1 & Thing 2 (Shawn and Brittany!) snuck in and threw gatorballs all over the spectrum tent. What a mess!

Closing out the week, the CIT's hosted a spectacular Seussical Carnival, where campers raced each other on a giant obstacle course, enjoyed fun rides, dunked their counselors in the infamous dunk tank and to our dismay, two very special bunks had the privilege of "pie-ing" Brittany and I in the face in front of the whole camp!

We are looking forward to having some EXTREME adventures with your camper this week during our World Wonder Scavenger Hunt!

Nature and Mad Science @ SRC
Week Three

We began camp at Nature with Sesame bunks planting in our vegtable and flower garden. Rockwood started off with a bang in Mad Science when we made film canister rockets, sandwich bag bombs and when the Sinbads made Volcanos and Geysers. We continued in Nature with some fun projects using items from Nature and even recycling items from our trash. Aladdins made leaf coasters. Sultans made their own paper using recycled paper and the Genies painted and named pet rocks. In Mad Science, Sinbads made lava lamps and Rockwood campers explored the wonders of fire and ice. Ask your Freshman and Sophmore campers about the process of sublimation (when a solid goes right to a gas phase without turning into liquid) and how we created some terrific fog using dry ice!

Rockwood Adventures Teen Travel

Week Three

The Rockwood Adventures Teen Travel campers had another great week!!!!  The Mystery Trip on Monday to Lake Compounce Amusement Park in Bristol, Connecticut was super. The water park there is so much fun and the rides just right! Bolderdash, one of the wooden coasters, is so different because it loops through the woods surrounding the

park! How can you beat a day at Six Flags New England Amusement Park and Hurricane Harbor Waterpark! Bizarro is rated one of the best coasters in the USA....how many times did they ride that coaster????? LOTS! Vermont was beautiful with visits to Cold Hollow Cider, Ben & Jerry's and the Vermont Teddy Bear Factory Tours and a dinnerstop at Oak Ledge Park on the shore of Lake Champlain. AND, what fun we had at Bromley Mountain Adventure Park riding the alpine slides, the Space Bikes, the Giant Swing, the Trampoline Things, the Shoot and Shower basketball game, the climbing wall, playing mini golf, trying the water slide and a buffet barbecue lunch. Our drive home wouldn't have been complete without a stop at The Rockland Bakery in Nanuet, New York. The bus had an overwhelming smell of Challah and bagels

all the way home!

This week we're off to Club Getaway, THE Resort for Teens in Kent, Connecticut, to New York City to see "Cinderella" on Broadway, out to Long Island to Splish Splash Waterpark and Dylan's Candy Bar and ending our week at Jenkinson's Boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey.

We still have some openings at the end of the summer in Session 5, August 12th - 16th. if your teen is interesting in trying a week. If you would like information about Rockwood Adventures 2014, contact Krissy at the camp office and we'll send a packet of information when the new schedule is available in September. A Note from the Nurses

Hydration 101

Did you know that 80% of our own body is comprised of water? No doubt about it drinking water is critical to staying hydrated each day.

Thirst is a warning mechanism letting you know that dehydration is lurking around the corner.

It is important that adults and children drink often durning hot weather and physical activities. Adults and children should drink
extra fluid before and after the activity and at regular intervals (every 20-30 minute) durning the activity.

Children tend to get wrapped up in what they are doing, so they often forget to break for a drink. Our counselors are trained to focus on keeping the children properly hydrate throughout the day. We also have multiple water stations throughout camp to remind the children and counselors to drink water and drink often.

So remember, if you are thirsty drink water! it is one of the easiest and safest ways to stay feeling good throughout this HOT summer season!
