Beating The Heat

The hot days of summer are here, so what does camp do? Glad you asked! All these and more play a key role in keeping our already "cool" kids cool.

  • Sprinkler systems are on
  • Activities in the Rec Barn and Wonderkey are air conditioned
  • Extra swims are offered when possible
  • Our water station is always open to keep campers and staff hydrated

Camp Lingo

GaGa:

This European dodgeball-style game combines dodging, striking, running and jumping. The object of the game is to hit opponents with a ball below the knee, while avoiding being hit. The game can be played by groups of individual players, teams and in one-on-one matches. Ga-ga is played in a large octagon or hexagon called the Ga-ga pit. Ga-ga begins with someone throwing the gaga ball up into the air. When it bounces the players say "Ga" each bounce for the first two bounces. Your back should stay on the wall until the three bounces are done. After three bounces the ball is in play and the game starts. Players "hit" the ball at each other in the ring. A player cannot "hit" the ball twice in a row, unless it bounces off a wall or another person. When a player is hit, he/she leaves the game. A player who hits or knocks the ball out of the pit is also out. If a player catches the ball in the air, the last person to hit the ball is out.

Fishing Corner

Only two weeks into the camp season and the fish are biting and swimming all over. Campers were catching fish on the dock and on the shore. Helping campers reel in these prize fish are our experienced fishermen Scott Leopold, Austin Fair and Wayne Atherholt. Keep reeling them in, campers!

Archery Happenings

We are lucky enough to have two certified archery coaches. Wayne Atherholt and Paul Choi have been coaching campers on how to properly use an archery bow. We already have several campers that have hit the bullseye. Way to go!

Here is what went on during Week 2:

Island Paradise Week
News from Uncle Howard & Aunt Dale
Dear Camp Families,

We hope you and your family had a fun and exciting holiday weekend. It was so nice to see the campers back at camp today with their smiling faces.

Island Paradise Week took us to the beautiful Islands of Hawaii. With island music, grass skirts and even a Waikiki Pool Party on Friday, camp was really swinging. In addition to celebrating with the Aladdins' Hawaiian Luau, camp also celebrated our country's heritage with the Red, White and Blue colors proudly worn by campers and staff alike. What would this holiday be without a family picnic! So we had a super picnic, a bit different in having it inside due some wetness in the air, but no matter. Everyone enjoyed the event.

This week kicks off Seuss On The Loosefeaturing the famous Cat in the Hat, a Genie and Aladdin Hat Man Show, Thing 1 Thing 2 Dress Up on Wednesday, The Happy Happy Horton Elephant Appreciation Day and concluding with a Camp-Wide Seussical Carnival on Friday celebrating National Sno Cone Day (really???) and the 1 Fish and 2 Fish Pool Party. Did we forget to tell you that the first of the extended nights at camp with dinner, a pool party and a casino night with the Rockwood Freshmen and Sophomores is this Wednesday July, 10th?

Hope to see everyone this week, be sure to say hi!

Regards,

Camper Director Day

Tuesday's Camper Director Day went off without a hitch! We all had so much fun showing our "mini-mes" what we do every day.  Our Camper Directors helped to take attendance, check on the pools and make calls on the walkie talkies! The Rockwood Camper Directors also helped with Clubs and Electives! Everyone had a fabulous day and we can't wait for the next Camper Director day.

Our WonderKey School is a fully accredited pre-school for children 2 through 5 years of age, where wonderful learning takes place. In a warm and nurturing environment, our young students benefit from excellent early learning experiences. The best part is that all of this takes place right here at camp where we can take full advantage of all that camp has to offer. Most members of WonderKey faculty are familiar camp faces; we even get to see Uncle Howard and Aunt Dale throughout the school year!  Our school participates in the Keystone Stars as a childcare provider. We exceed State Health & Safety licensing requirements.

If you would like more information or a tour of the WonderKey School, please contact our School Director Fern Helfer (Camp's Genie Director) at (610) 279-8711. Our website can be a great resource too!

Genies and Aladdins
Week Two

All I can say is WOW! It has been a whirlwind of activities for the Genie and Aladdin campers these first two weeks. In addition to their already fun-filled schedules each group took part in an event especially planned for them. During the Genie Jamboree, the Genies completed "Super Hero Training". These tiny Super Heros were able to solve the mystery of the "Missing Miss Shawn!" On Monday, the Aladdins "hoola'd" their way to the Hawaiian Luau. Beachball games, live music and pineapple treats were some of the highlights of this fabulous event. To help celebrate the July 4th Holiday, the Genies and Aladdins enjoyed an indoor Picnic Lunch. The merriment was a delight to all in attendance! Even though this week brought some rain, the Genies and Aladdins brightened up camp with all their smiling faces!

Sultans
Week Two

What an amazing start we've had to the 2013 summer! Over the last two weeks the Sultans have been busy reconnecting with old friends, forming new friendships and enjoying the many exciting activities on their schedules.

Their days are fun packed with swimming, the arts, sports, climbing, fishing and so much more. One of the favorite activities is Sports Leagues. The campers are divided into teams and play various sport activities against each other. Their counselors ("coaches") along with members of the sport staff cheer them on as they not only play, but are gaining great spirit, determination and sportsmanship.

The Sultans also show amazing camp spirit as they travel from one activity to another chanting their Sultan chant. I love hearing it!

We are looking forward to more fun in the weeks to come. Enjoy your weekend.

STAND UP TALL,
STAND UP PROUD!
WE'RE THE SULTANS,
SAY IT LOUD!

Sinbads
Week Two

Shhhh! Sinbad Secret Society is officially in session for Summer 2013. We flew through Week One with our super hero outfits and capes. We learned about "Sinbad Choice," got acclimated at the pool and met our fantastic new counselors. We danced at the Justice League Dance Party and watched some flops at the Powerhouse Pool Party to wrap up Week One. We have many new faces in the Sinbad division including me, the new Sinbad Director! You can ask the Sinbads about our secret handshake, but only the most trusted parents might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse.

Week Two began by celebrating Sesame Rockwood's 60th Birthday with singing and sundaes. The Island Paradise theme has us hoping for some island sun for the rest of the summer. We're looking forward to the weeks ahead and all of the friends we're making along the way in the Sinbad division and throughout camp. After all, "Friends Happen Here!"

Benjamin Anderson - Sinbad Director

Rockwood
Week Two

Rockwood's 2013 season has started off wonderfully! We have made new friends and reunited with our old ones. The Freshman campers have settled into Rockwood smoothly, while learning how to choose their Clubs and Electives for the first time. Week 1 was action packed and ended with an awesome Justice League Dance Party and Powerhouse Pool Party. This past Monday, the Junior, Seniors and Grads invaded Facenda Whitaker to show off their bowling skills.  Tuesday's "Birthday Bash" was an outrageous birthday party for everyone topped off with build your own sundaes at lunch! As if that wasn't enough, Tuesday was also the Rockwood Camper/Director Day. It was great to see the campers interacting with the Leadership Team throughout camp. The campers and staff showed off their patriotic side on Wednesday, dressing in red, white and blue to help celebrate the 4th of July. Everyone loved the picnic lunch. Our week was capped off by Friday's Water Obstacle Island and Waikiki Pool Party.  It was a fantastic first two weeks. We hope that you had a great holiday!

CITs/Interns
Week Two

The CIT/Interns have started off the summer right! We have been successfully participating in our morning meetings, which have been a great "getting to know you" exercise. During the past two weeks we have been getting acquainted with our schedules and some of the new activities that are scheduled for the CITs/Interns this summer. Gameshows have been fun and an excellent activity in helping us get to know one another. We cheered for our teammates and were able to show support for our friends. We also began our Workshops. Nurse Carla spoke to us about the importance of first aid, hydration and confidentiality. On Monday, we went bowling with the Juniors, Seniors and Grads at Facenda Whitaker.  We had such a great time and it was nice to get out of the rain for a little while! We finished Island Paradise Week with a Hula Dancing Competition.

Nature and Mad Science

At Nature the Sesame bunks are planting in our vegetable and flower garden. Rockwood started off with a bang in Mad Science when we made film canister rockets and sandwich bag bombs. The Sinbads made volcanoes and geysers. We continued with some fun projects using different items from Nature and even recycled items from our trash. Aladdins made leaf coasters, Sultans made their own paper using recycled paper and the Genies painted and named pet rocks. In Mad Science, Sinbads made lava lamps and Rockwood campers explored the wonders of fire and ice. Ask your Freshman and Sophomore campers about the process of sublimation (when a solid goes right to a gas phase without turning into liquid) and how we created some terrific fog using dry ice!
